  • The rating of a circuit breaker depends not only on the interrupting current but also on a transient recovery voltage (TRV). To achieve a successful interruption, the circuit breaker must withstand the TRV. A superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is a device that limits the fault current fast and effectively without having high impedance during normal operation of the power system. Therefore, we studied the influence of the TRV according to the application of a resistive type SFCL in distribution system. This paper analyses the influence of the TRV for various application position of the resistive SFCL. The distribution system and the resistive SFCL were modeled by using EMTP-RV (Electromagnetic Transient Program - Restructured Version)

  • Since the discovery of the high temperature superconductors many researches have been performed for the practical applications of superconductivity technologies in various fields. As results, significant progress has been achieved. Especially, Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) offers an attractive means In limit fault current in power systems. HTS resistive type SFCL is based on the ultra fast transition from the superconducting (non resistive) state to the normal (resistive) state by overstepping the critical current density, In this study, the simulation method of resistive type superconducting fault current limiter using EMTDC is proposed and the developed EMTDC model of SFCL is applied to the modeled power network using the Parameters of real system.

  • We investigated the current limiting characteristics of resistive and inductive SFCLs with 100${\Omega}$ of Quench impedance for a double line-to-ground fault, in the 154 kV transmission system. The fault simulation at the phase angles $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$ showed that the resistive SFCL limited the fault current less than 17 kA without any DC component after one half cycle from the instant of the fault. On the other hand, the inductive SFCL suppressed the current below 12 kA, but with 3$\sim$5 kA of DC component which decreased to zero in 6 cycles. We concluded that the inductive SFCL had higher performance in current limiting but the resistive SFCL was better from the view point of DC components.

  • Recently fault currents are increasing in a network. It is caused by increase in electric demand and high penetration of distributed generation with renewable energy sources. Moreover, distribution network has become more and more complex as mesh network to improve the distribution system reliability and increase the flexibility and agility of network operation. Accordingly, the fault current will exceed capacity of circuit breakers soon and all the various rational solutions to solve this problem are taken into account. Under these circumstances, superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) is a new alternative in the viewpoint of technical and economic aspects. This study presents operation processes for a resistive-type of SFCL, and it proposes reliability model for the SFCL. When a SFCL is installed into a network, the contribution of decreased fault currents to failure for distribution equipments can be quantified. As a result, it is expected that a SFCL makes the reliability of adjacent equipments on existing network improve and these changes are analyzed. We propose a methodology to evaluate the reliability in the distribution network where a SFCL is installed considering a reliability model for resistive-type of SFCL and reliability changes for adjacent equipments which are proposed in this paper.

  • Several kinds of superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs), which reduces huge fault current, have been developing by many research groups. The SFCL has no impedance during normal operation, so it dose not give any influence to electric power system. The resistive type SFCL reduces the fault current with the impedance generated in the superconducting part of the SFCL when the fault current exceeds the critical current of SFCL. In this paper, a new type resistive SFCL made of bifilar coil wound with two different high-Tc superconducting (HTS) wires in parallel. Although a bifilar coil has theoretically no inductance, the bifilar coil made in this paper could generate inductance at fault. The specifications of the used two wires were considerably different, thus current distribution between the two HTS wire was different at fault. When the fault current exceeded the critical current of one wire in the bifilar coil, the momentary sharp increase of impedance was detected. Base on the results, a new resistive type SFCL can generate not only resistance but also inductance, which can be used to control a fault current in the future.

  • In the case of HTS Resistive type Superconducting Fault Current Limiter(SFCL), its possibility has been discussed due to its theory and a simple structure. The Resistive type SFCL can be useful for the protection of the power delivery systems from fault current. Effective simulation scheme that can be applied to the utility network readily and cheaply under various conditions considering the sort of faults, the capacity of systems as well are strongly expected and emphasized among researchers. This paper proposes a simulation skill of resistive type SFCL using PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • We have performed the current and voltage loading tests of resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLS) based on $YBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{7}$(YBCO) films with the diameter of 2 inch. The SFCL consists of meander-type YBCO stripes covered with 200 nm Au layer grown in situ for current shunt and heat dispersion at hot spots. The minimum quench current of an SFCL unit was about 25 Apeak. Seven SFCL units were connected in parallel fur the current load ing tests at power source of 100 $V_{rms}$ $/2,000A_{rms}$. This SFCL units had maximum limiting current of 170 Apeak during the fault instant and then successfully controlled the fault current below 100 Apeak within 1~2 msec after short circuit. Increased short current also reduced the quench completion time with little change of current limiting characterization. We connected six SFCL units in series fur the voltage loading tests at power source of $1,200 V_{rms}$/170 $A_{rms}$ at this time. The shunt resistors were inserted into each SFCL unit to eliminate power imbalance originated from serial connection of SFCL units. Each SFCL unit was quenched simultaneously during the fault condition. The current increased up to 40 $A_{peak}$ and decreased to 14 $A_{peak}$ after 3 cycles. Quench was completed within 1 msec after the fault. We confirmed operating characteristics of 140 kVA($120 A_{rms}$ $\times$ 1,200 $V_{rms}$) SFCL and presented the manufacturing possibility of 3.3 kV SFCL using 4 inch YBCO films.BCO films.lms.

  • Superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) is expected to be introduced into electric power system in future as an effective countermeasure for the increase of the short-circuit current due to the growth of the electric power system. SFCL has a merit that the fault current can be limited by the resistance generated when a superconductor transits from a superconducting state to a normal state without additional detecting device. In this paper, we investigated the resistance variance of resistive type SFCL and the fault current limiting characteristics due to the amplitude of source voltage. We could obtain the more effective fault current limiting characteristics of SFCL as the source voltage increased.
