  • Precast culvert system is generally constructed with a series of process such as excavation, ground mitigation, placement of culverts, anti-leakage packing between adjacent culverts, post-tensioning for PS strands and backfilling. In this process inappropriate ground mitigation often causes differential settlement and, correspondingly, makes water-leakage to be occurred between adjacent boxes. This study was performed to understand the behavioral characteristics of recently proposed precast foundation plate to support precast culvert system through on-site pilot construction. The gap between two adjacent culverts, increment of earth pressure at the bottom of culvert, vertical settlement of top of the culverts were monitored using various sensors. The monitoring results showed that the proposed foundation plate provides better culvert system in the points of less gap development, earth pressure and settlement at the adjacent of two culverts.

  • Slum settlement, a direct result of the rapid worldwide urbanization is a common site in most developing countries. Uganda is among the top African countries with high number of slums. The status of Katanga slum located in the low-lands between Mulago national hospital and Makerere University is a typical of many other slums within Uganda. This project proposal seeks to tackle urbanization challenges by specializing in slum upgrading as a sustainable way of curbing the menace. An integrated toilet, biogas, poultry and backyard gardening project is proposed as a channel of boosting the Katanga slum dwellers' economic, sanitation and domestic energy status. Designed to serve up to 30 households, the project will utilize residual wastes from poultry houses and toilets to produce biogas and slurry. The biogas yield will provide clean cooking fuel and energy for lighting, while the slurry used as organic fertilizers to improve vegetable yields. The social, economic and environmental impacts of the project will empower the vulnerable women and children within the slums and reduce water pollution and land degradation. This affordable project can be applied in developing countries experiencing slum settlement challenges as a strategy for reducing urbanization pressure.

  • SCP(Sand Compaction Pile) method that forms a composite ground by driving compacted sand piles into the soft ground. This method is one of the soil improvement techniques for reinforcing and strengthening soft ground deposits. This thesis describes the investigation on the behavior of soft ground reinforced with SCP by low improvement ratio. Direct shear test and consolidation test carried out to verified behavior of composite ground reinforced with SCP. Test results were discussed with reference to the amount of consolidation settlement, variation of shear resistance with area replacement ratio and effect of the stress concentration. And, laboratory model loading test carried out to verified the effect of the location and failure mode of reinforced embankment. Residual shear strength varies with the area replacement and constrict load in the low replacement ratio. Calculated stress concentration ratio overestimate than proposed valve by experimental, theoretical and analytical method. As regards the location, improving right below of the top of the slope was more effective than below of the toe of the slope. This thesis carried out to obtain fundamental information of behavior of the composit ground. Hereafter, centrifuge test that reproduce stress state of the in-situ must be necessary through the further study about pile penetration, reinforce position and construct time.

  • Because pile behavior is governed by geotechnical characteristics of surrounding soils, it is therefore necessary to monitor ground responses during pile driving and analyze the relation between the behaviors of pile and ground. In this research, the 57 m long PHC pile was driven into deep soft clay in the Nakdong River estuary area. During and after the pile driving, the ground responses and the residual load of pile have been monitored for about a year, by using piezometers, inclinometers, level posts for surface settlement, and strain gauges in piles etc. As the results, the residual load by the negative skin friction along the pile increased with the dissipation of the excess pore pressure, which was developed by pile driving and reclamation. About 30% of the maximum residual load developed due to the dissipation of the increased excess pore pressure during the driving. It is thus emphasized that most piles driven in clay deposits need to be designed by considering negative skin friction along the pile.

  • The secondary consolidation settlement of soft clay is generally very little compared to the total settlement and occurs very slowly during long-term period. However the secondary consolidation settlement is comparatively large amount in organic and heavily compressed clay and is a very important engineering factor. In order to reduce residual settlements in reclaimed soft ground, the preloading method is often used. In this study, in order to determine reasonable long-term settlements of large reclaimed site, laboratory incremental loading consolidation tests and surcharging consolidation tests are performed. Sampling was done at Incheon area of west coast and Gwangyang area of south coast in Korea. The characteristics of secondary consolidation have obtained through laboratory tests and analyzed systematically to predict long-term settlements. Additionally, the location data and laboratory test results are correlated by using GIS(geographic information system). The secondary consolidation settlement of the site was predicted based on D/B and the operation technique and estimation technique of space of GIS.

  • Seabed settlement underneath a coastal structure may occur due to wave loading generated by storm surge. If the foundation seabed consists of sandy soil, the possibility of the seabed settlement may be more susceptible because of generation of residual excess pore-water pressure and cyclic mobility. However, most coastal structures, such as breakwater, quay wall, etc., are designed by considering wave load assumed to be static condition as an uniform load and the wave load only acts on the structure. In real conditions, however, the wave load is dynamically applied to seabed as well as the coastal structure. In this study, therefore, a real-time wave load is considered and which is assumed acting on both the structure and seabed. Based on a numerical analysis, it was found that there exists a significant effect of wave load on the structure and seabed. The deformation behavior of the seabed according to time was simulated, and other related factors such as the variation of effective stress and the change of effective stress path in the seabed were clearly observed.

  • Larger area will be constructed in a harbor land and container terminal which are constructed in reclaimed land using the dredged materials. Soil improvement work is to be carried out including constructibility, in which is monitoring devices, measuring frequency, installations etc. The ground water tables in the reclaimed area are affected by the several factors which are design reclamation level, consolidation settlement, remaining surcharge pressure and remaining excess pore water pressure. The plan wii be drawn up in which monitoring results for the ground water tables are capable to provide the reliable ground water table when designers and civil engineers construct the harbor structures considering constructibility.

  • Recently , the hydraulic fill method is commonly used in many reclamation projects due to lack of fill materialss. The method of hydraulic fill i recalmation is executed by transporting the mixture of water -soil particles into a relcaimed land through dredging pipes, then the dredged soil particels settle down in thewater orflow over an out flow weir with the water. The amount of the volume reductions of dredged soil is considered the sum of the overall settlement by descication shrinkage and self-weigth consolidation and the loss of soil particles flow over a weir. In the present study, hydrometer analysis was performed with the soil samples obtained bofore and after dredging to estimate the amount of soil particles residual at reclaimed area and the loss of soil particles , then it was suggested the method of determining the loss ratio of dredged soils from the tests results. The hydrometer analysis of in-situ soil samples showed that the loss ratio of dredged soils is lowest at the nearest point to dredge pipe and highest at the nearest point of out flow weir.

  • In the large scale recent reclaiming works performed within the wide spatial boundary, evaluation of long-term consolidation settlement and residual settlement of the whole construction area is sometimes made with the results of the limited ground investigation and measurement. Then the reliability of evaluation has limitations due to the spatial uncertainty. Additionally, in case of large scale deep excavation works such as urban subway construction, there are a lot of hazardous elements to threaten the safety of underground pipes or adjacent structures. Therefore it is necessary to introduce a damage prediction system of adjacent structures and others. For the more accurate analysis of monitoring information in the wide spatial boundary works and large scale urban deep excavations, it is necessary to perform statistical and spatial analysis considering the geographical spatial effect of ground and monitoring information in stead of using diagrammatization method based on a time-series data expression that is traditionally used. And also it is necessary that enormous ground information and measurement data, digital maps are accumulated in a database, and they are controlled in a integrating system. On the abovementioned point of view, we developed Geomonitor 2.0, an Internet based real time monitoring program with a new concept by adding GIS and geo-statistical analysis method to the existing real time integrated measurement system that is already developed and under useful use. The new program enables the spatial analysis and database of monitoring data and ground information, and helps the construction- related persons make a quick and accurate decision for the economical and safe construction.

  • This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation on applicability of Light-weighted Foam Soils (LWFS) consisted of dredged soils for soft ground improvement. The engineering properties of LWFS were comprehensively investigated based on the previous experimental tests. And three dimensional numerical models which reflect soft ground conditions were adopted to evaluate the applicability of LWFS compared to SCP and DCM. A number of cases were analyzed using a stress-pore pressure coupled model. The results indicated that LWFS method enables to reduce more settlement, lateral flow and heaving than SCP method and enable to reduce more residual settlement than DCM method. Also it was revealed that such effect depends on the properties of LWFS such as unit weight, unconfined compressive strength, deformation modulus and Poisson's ratio.
