The objective of this study was to evaluate corrosion resistance of Zn-Al-Mg alloy coated steel in residential water with trace quantities of Cl-. Comparative evaluations were performed using two commercial coated steel products, GI and Galvalume, as reference samples. Examination of corrosion morphology and measurement of weight loss revealed that the Zn-Al-Mg alloy coated steel exhibited higher corrosion resistance than reference samples. This finding suggests that the alloy coated steel possesses long-term corrosion resistance not only in highly Cl- concentrated environments such as seawater, but also in environments with extremely low levels of Cl- found in residential water. The primary factor contributing to the superior corrosion resistance of the Zn-Al-Mg alloy coated steel in residential water is the formation of an inhibiting corrosion product composed primarily of two phases: Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2 and Zn5(OH)8Cl2·H2O. The preferential dissolution of Mg from the corroded coating layer can increase alkalinity, which might enhance the thermodynamical stability of Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2.
Today, residential building is considered of be one of the most important space of their quality of life and health. Residential buildings should provide comfortable environments to support the activities of their occupants. And good residential buildings are made by appropriately combining residential spaces, such as living room, master bedroom, bedroom, kitchen, restroom, and so on. These combinations in residential building are must be compatible with the activities of the occupants and their needs. The objective of this research is to investigate and analyze the relative importance and space priority between residential space in residential buildings depending on occupants' characteristics, such as, gender and age. Especially, this research is to find space weighting factors for integrative evaluation in residential buildings based on occupant survey. These weighting factors play an important role in determining the relative importance of various residential spaces for integrative residential space evaluation. And, the result from this research will help designers and researchers to find space planning strategies in residential building, and develop new integrative evaluation framework for improving residential quality from the occupants' point of view.

Objectives: Respiratory virus infections are the most common disease among all ages in all parts of the world and occur through airborne transmission. The purpose of this study was to detect and quantitate human respiratory viruses in residential environments. Methods: Air samples were collected from the residential space of apartments in the Seoul/Gyeonggi-do area. The samples were collected from indoor and outdoor air. Among respiratory viruses, influenza A virus, influenza B virus, parainfluenza virus, metapneumovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, and adenovirus were investigated by multiplex polymerase chain reaction. Among the virus-positive samples, we performed adenovirus quantification by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results: Virus detection rates were 44.0%, 3.8%, 3.4%, and 17.3% in spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. The virus detection rate was higher in winter and spring than in summer and autumn. Adenovirus was most commonly detected, followed by influenza A virus and parainfluenza virus. Virus distribution was not significantly different between indoor and outdoor environments. Conclusions: Although virus concentrations were not high in residential environments, residents in houses with detected viruses may have an increased risk of exposure to airborne respiratory viruses, especially in winter and spring.

The purpose of this study is to explore empirically the effects of the residential environments and housing consciousness on the housing tenure choice of newlyweds in the Seoul metropolitan region. Regarding the results of the empirical analysis, firstly, not only the household's attributes and housing characteristics but also the residential environments and housing consciousness were significant factors on housing tenure choice. Secondly, as a household considers worse housing quality and better environmental quality surrounding the housing, the household chose Cheonsei housing more often than owner-occupied housing. On the other hand, as a household reviews only better living condition, the selection probability of monthly rent was higher. Thirdly, as a household regards that the housing investment value was more important, the choice probability of owner-occupied housing was higher than that of other tenure types.
In this research, an attempt was made to approach social sustainability of residential environments that have been studied thus far in community-oriented research in a broader perspective, with the aim to induce evaluation indicators for social sustainability of a residential environment that is oriented for enhancement of the residents' life quality. First, evaluation system of social sustainability of residential environments is divided into 6 areas that include regionality, diversity, fairness, satisfaction of diverse needs, social exchange, and participation and decision making. A subdivision was also introduced to account for evaluation properties by area. Second, regarding measurement of life quality in a residential environment, the scope of evaluation was divided into residential environment dimension, resident dimension, and management dimension which can incorporate both objective evaluation and subjective evaluation in consideration of the fact that it involves both physical environment and socio-psychological elements. Third, evaluation indicators by area were collected based on an analysis of preceding studies. For the purpose, a total of 193 indicators were extracted, including 28 items of regionality area, 26 items of diversity area, 28 items of fairness area, 58 items of satisfaction of diverse needs, 34 items of social exchange area, and 19 items of participation and decision making area. The kind of evaluation indicators have meaning in that it can be used as an evaluation tool of social sustainability that can be applied universally from the planning stage. It can be utilized as a basic data for enhancement of life quality and promotion of social values in a residential environment.
The purpose of this study was to identify the universal design characteristics in residential environments. The subjects were 135 physically disabled persons who lived in the rental multi-family housing apartments in Pusan. Interview method was used for this study. They were an average age of 51 years and 63% were male. They were low income families and lived in 12 pyung ($39.75\textrm{m}^2$) apartments. They were asked about what housing characteristics were constraints in their daily living. They pointed out that the constraints in their apartments were as follows: 1) the small amount of space in the bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, and the entrance area of housing unit, 2) the unflat floor level between the bathroom and the hallway, or the balcony and the bedroom, 3) the slippery floor finish in the bathroom, 4) lack of grab bars or handrails in the bathroom and the ramp, 5) the kitchen work centers and the electric switches at improper height, and 6) the steep ramp. Therefore, the universal design characteristics in residential environments were the adequate amount of space, flat floor level, non-slippery floor finish, grab bars or handrails, accessible height, and ramp.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the environmental factors relating to children's outdoor play and to assess how the residential neighborhood is suitable for play in the perception of parents. Based on a citywide survey of 500 parents of elementary school students in grades 1-4 in Seoul, this empirical study shows that children's outdoor play environments in residential neighborhoods of Seoul have been observed to be overall unsuitable for play activity. Three physical environmental factors (spatial availability, neighborhood attractiveness, and street difficulties) and three social environmental factors (fear of crime, social interactions, and psychological comfort) are related to children's play activity. Five factors, with the exception of the psychological comfort factor, impact the suitability of children's outdoor play environment. Specifically, it is the physical environment, rather than the social environment, that was deemed unsuitable in spite of its impacts. These findings help us understand the current conditions of neighborhood play environments associated with children's play activity. It is necessary to improve parents' perceptions of the play environment and children's play activities by improving the physical environment.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence the need for improvements to dormitory environments and to study the stress from school-life according to residential satisfaction in dormitories and housing. For the purpose of this study, a survey was conducted including a questionnaire consisting of a residential satisfaction scale, a need of dormitory environment improvement scale, and a school-life stress scale. The subjects were 453 special purpose students in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do who all live in a dormitory. Factor analysis, Cronbach' $\alpha$ and MANOVA were employed for data analysis, and Scheffe test was used for post-hoc analysis. First, the lower group the satisfaction of a physical residential environment in a dormitory, the more likely it is that the dormitory environment need improvement. The result of this study suggests that dormitory students are much more sensitive to conditions relating to physical residential satisfaction than to sociopsychological residential satisfaction. Also, the residents believe that change to these physical residential conditions facilitate an improvement to sociopsychological residential satisfaction. Moreover, when the satisfaction of a physical residential environment is lower group, more perceptive stress occurs from academic, health and personal factors while a lower satisfaction for the sociopsychological residential environment results in a more perceptive stress from the environment. The result of this study suggests that dormitory conditions indicate the necessity of improving the environment to adapt well to school-life, thus reducing stress. Also when simply providing a supplementary physical residential environment the sociopsychological residential environment should be considered, as this can cause conflicts between roommates. Second, the lower group the satisfaction for a physical residential environment in housing, the more likely it is that the dormitory environment need improvement. The result of this study suggests that for environments of inadequate housing there is a strong urge towards needing more independence and a better living environment. Third, when group feel there is a more substantial difference in the physical residential environment between dormitories and housing, it is more likely it is that the dormitory environment need to be improved. Also, when they feel there is more substantial difference in the sociopsychological residential environment between dormitories and housing, a more perceptive stress is detected from the environment. The result of this study suggests that dormitory students want to have the same level of conditions as those provided in housing. Also, dormitory students want to need more physical environment improvement than sociopsychological environment improvement.

This study describes the difference of lighting directing techniques of between asian and westerner in the residential space, and presents the LED lighting environment according to the residents' behaviors. This study was conducted with Koreans, European and North Americans, and the space range was limited to the living room where the various activities occur. The data of the desired LED lighting environment is drawn through lighting technique, illumination color temperature and illuminance variation of LED in living room, and the detailed study results are as follows ; First, the lighting in living space should be made with considering the various behaviors because the expected level according to consideration or not of behavior makes much difference. Second, the comfortably feeling LED lighting environments that are lighting technique, illumination color temperature and illuminance variation, are different between Koreans and North Americans, but Koreans and European feel comfortable under the similar LED lighting environments. Third, the data for the comfortable LED lighting environments is established according to the various residents' behaviors, which are watching TV, reading, studying, relaxing, chatting, entertaining guests. And then, the established LED lighting environments are analyzed with characteristic of behavior and classified according to lighting technique, illumination color temperature and illuminance variation for understanding their characteristic Few studies have been conducted to find out difference of the comfortably feeling LED lighting environment between asians and westerners. Therefore, in this study, it has a great significance to present the difference of the LED lighting environments that asians and westerners feel comfortable in living space, and to draw the characteristic of the expected lighting environment according to residents' behaviors.
The principle of aging-in-place should be fundamental in designing post-retirement homes to support baby boomers' healthy aging in their current living conditions. This study investigated Korean-American baby boomers' opinions about their life images in their post-retirement homes and the needs for supportive services therein. A questionnaire survey was conducted, and a total of 247 responses were used for statistical analyses. As the most important life image for their post-retirement homes, baby boomers emphasized the living environments offering various recreational activities. They indicated the post-retirement homes close to their children or family members as the next important life image. These opinions differed depending on their socioeconomic characteristics. In particular, baby boomers with higher-income preferred housing environments offering diverse recreational activities while those with lower-income preferred the housing close to more employment opportunities. In terms of supportive services available in the post-retirement homes, they wanted 'healthcare assistance services' and 'diverse recreational programs.' Gender, educational attainment, and annual income affected their preferences in these services, though. Based on the findings, this study concluded that post-retirement housing environments should create spaces to accommodate various recreational activities and include places for them to work in near-home environments. In the community, various need-based customized recreational activities and educational programs should be planned considering different socioeconomic characteristics of baby boomers. All these considerations will provide supportive residential environments for their successful aging in place.
