Four requirements for the operating and supporting system for sustainable landscape management will be discussed through this paper. The requirements are based on multiple case studies on the structure and the process of development of three organizations that have been contributing to the sustainable rural landscape management in Japan since 1989. The first requirement is that the residents should recognize regional problems and voluntarily organize a group which can properly deal with the problems. Secondly, members of the organization should have a solid grasp of the goal of their activities (or founding principal of the organization) and share it among themselves. Founding principal should include the history of natural circulation system in the area, cultural features and a future plan in association with human resources. Thirdly, the administration of the organization should be separated from the founder, the residents. The administration, such as business promotion, becomes more effective when consigned to a separate entity, not to the residents. Lastly, the interaction among separate entities is crucial to promote diverse activities for the local landscape management. The administrators and experts need to cooperate to draw a precise conclusion regarding the way of interaction. These requirements drawn from the Japanese case studies should be localized to the Korean circumstances for further adoption.

The results of this study are as follows. First, Atarasimura is the citizen farm of Miyashiro which promotes regional activation, community consciousness and the interchange of residents. Second, cultivation area and the miscellaneous scrub transforms the area into a park-like one, protecting a natural environment and making a beautiful landscape. Atarasimura is expected to enhance the studying effect of the children and young people. Third, the direct sale of agricultural products leads to the increase of income and resident employment opportunities. Fourth, the plan of future regional facilities must be made within a legal system and a systematic program for region making. In addition, the system of rational participation and cooperation between administration and local residents is important.

In this study, surveys and data collection on new profit-sharing measures were carried out in order to improve the residential environment and residents' participation in 65 MW large-scale solar power complex located at Munhye 5-ri, Galmal-eup, Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do province. From May to September 2018, the presentation and meetings for residents were held and a survey for 67 households were carried out in order to collect profit-sharing data which is sharing profits from solar power project improving residential environment. The results of the survey shows that it needs to improve some obstacles of residential environment in rural areas, such as improvement of living infrastructure at village level, improvement of monotonous leisure activities from the residents' point of view, improvement of economic income sources depending on farm income and Basic Old-age Pensions, inconvenience factors in the unsuitable residential environment due to aging. Based on these findings, this paper suggests that Profit-Sharing solar power complex project has possibilities to improve living environment in rural areas by sharing profits from power generation and residents participating in the project with consensus for need of renewable energy.

In this study, the effects of street improvement projects in particular regions are carefully scrutinized, classified, and compared based on the types of citizen participation in those projects which are offered as one of several urban regeneration methods. The Wonju and Siheung Street Improvement Projects were selected for case studies, and in-depth interviews and a survey are conducted in both regions. As a result of in-depth interviews, the Wonju project is the community initiative type in which the community has responsibilities and decision-making abilities. On the other hand, Siheung is the community participative type in which the opinions of the community have been limited The survey targeted more than 100 local merchants, and they were asked to answer to the questions which were categorized into 21 items with a 5-point Likert scale. The analysis method was carried out through a reliability test, regression. average analysis on each group, and a T-test by SPSS 18.0. Factor analysis results show four factors: physical, partnership, community, and economical revitalization. These results reveal that the social factor can be sub-divided into a community factor and partnership factor. As a result of revitalization factors by citizen participation type, the resident initiative type is more revitalized than the resident participative type in all four factors, and shows positive responses in physical and economical revitalization factors. In particular, the physical revitalization factor has a big impact on resident satisfaction regardless of type. The community revitalization factor also has an impact on two types. It reveals that the communication is as important as physical improvement. However, it shows that no type of project affects partnership revitalization. As a result of this study, if we considered only physical improvement as project achievement, you can achieve the desired outcome without consideration of residents' participation types. Furthermore, if regional revitalization is the goal of a street improvement project, we must consider other factors such as a partnership and community revitalization.

Background: To illustrate multiple approaches and to assess participation rates adopted for a community based smoking cessation intervention programme in rural Kerala. Materials and Methods: Resident males in the age group 18-60 years who were 'current daily smokers' from 4 randomly allocated community development blocks of rural Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala (2 intervention and 2 control groups) were selected. Smoking status was assessed through house-to-house survey using trained volunteers. Multiple approaches included awareness on tobacco hazards during baseline survey and distribution of multicolour anti-tobacco leaflets for intervention and control groups. Further, the intervention group received a tobacco cessation booklet and four sessions of counselling which included a one-time group counselling cum medical camp, followed by proactive counselling through face-to-face (FTF) interview and mobile phone. In the second and fourth session, motivational counselling was conducted. Results: Among 928 smokers identified, smokers in intervention and control groups numbered 474 (mean age: 44.6 years, SD: 9.66 years) and 454 respectively (44.5 years, SD: 10.30 years). Among the 474 subjects, 75 (16%) had attended the group counselling cum medical camp after completion of baseline survey in the intervention group, Among the remaining subjects (n=399), 88% were contacted through FTF and mobile phone (8.5%). In the second session (4-6 weeks time period), the response rate for individual counselling was 94% (78% through FTF and 16% through mobile phone). At 3 months, 70.4% were contacted by their mobile phone and further, 19.6% through FTF (total 90%) while at 6 months (fourth session), the response rate was 74% and 16.4% for FTF and mobile phone respectively, covering 90.4% of the total subjects. Overall, in the intervention group, 97.4% of subjects were being contacted at least once and individual counselling given. Conclusion: Proactive community centred intervention programmes using multiple approaches were found to be successful to increase the participation rate for intervention.

Recently, many people have attempted to combine the 4th industry in various fields. Citizen participation has also become more important in the policy making and decision making process. Therefore, this study examined ways to encourage citizen participation by integrating the 4th industry in the field of urban planning and design. The research method was to design street space using virtual reality, and to examine the preference of design and the satisfaction of using a virtual reality device for Cheongju citizens and residents. The main result is that the use of VR in the design process of street space can achieve a sufficient outcome in terms of inducing resident participation. The opinions of the respondents before and after the VR experience were different from each other. After the VR experience, understanding, participation and interest in design were improved. On the other hand, during the course of the study, there are many difficulties in obtaining a place that satisfied the conditions of the PC-VR equipment. Although it can be used by connecting a smart phone and a VR device, the constraint of free movement and degradation of the graphic quality are inevitable. In addition, it is difficult to operate simple interfaces because VR devices are not yet popularized. Accordingly, it will be necessary to popularize and commercialize VR equipment and establish a legal basis.

This study investigated the problem of the existing rural development plan where the opinions of local residents are excluded due to the lack of expert knowledge and limited participation and sought the village development plan driven by the voluntary participation of local residents by applying a rural forum targeting rural villages to solve the problem. As a result of the study, (1) the problem of the current village development plan should be made based on the participation of local residents, and (2) this problem has remained as an important challenge. Therefore, the village improvement activities that have reflected the opinions of local residents can be said to be (3) the process that seeks the change into the rural planning process led by local residents, and this study derived the ways to ensure the voluntary behavior of local residents, strengthen local residents' capacity to create on-going villages, and expand local residents' participation opportunities in the entire process of rural planning through the application of the rural forum. (4) Although it is generally difficult for local residents to propose opinions directly and exert influence in the rural planning and design process and it is not easy to reduce the difference in the perspective between the professionals and local residents, significance lies in the fact that local residents voluntarily determine the future of their region and derive the plan. Therefore, the experience of decision-making and consensus process through the rural forum can promote the sustainability of the village creation participated by local residents and the increase of local residents' role. This study took one village as an example to reflect the results applied to the rural forum, and it is difficult to determine that it has been fully verified with the method of residents' participation. Therefore, future studies to verify the effectiveness of village creation and seek the empirical utilization measures are needed more, and the operation of education programs and various support plans suitable to the capacity and level of local residents should be promoted rather than the traditional lecture-style stereotyped education in the future for sustainable rural development.
This study researches the level of satisfaction by apartment building management factor for different characteristics of apartment building residents and seeks to understand the relationship between socio-psychological properties and level of satisfaction. This study is based on a comparative method using a questionnaire by more than 682 housewives living in apartment complexes. Residents of apartment buildings are generally satisfied with housing and management of the apartment building that they are currently living in, but they wanted improvements such as programs that can support community living and increase participation of residents and operation of a web site. Furthermore, it was found that there was a significant difference in terms of operation management, such as sanitation control and processing for apartment buildings and community life management, according to the characteristics of the resident. Also, level of satisfaction in management was found to be influenced by pride and level of satisfaction in relationships with neighbors, showing that management of apartment buildings can have a positive impact on the socio-psychological properties of the residents.
This paper describes the design and trial development of a system that supports continuous hazard mapping by local residents in their daily life. We performed an interview survey to design our system in a model traditional town in Saga Prefecture, Japan. The results show that despite continued efforts, many practical problems remain and residents feel unsafe. Considering these results, we designed and developed a unique information and communication technology-based support system that contributes to community-based disaster prevention and reduction. The continuous resident participation and posting design are the core concept for our community-based approach. Our system continues to support making a hazard map by integrating the community-based hazard information. Local residents register information (disaster types, risk level, photographs, comments, positional information) about locations that could be dangerous in a disaster. In addition, our system enables information sharing through a Web server. We expect that this information sharing will allow local hazard information for each district to be used.
