  • The emergency power supplies (EPSs) are required to increase battery sizing for protecting power source loss above designed criteria. This study proposes a sizing method for lithium-based batteries for EPSs in nuclear power plants on the basis of the calculation method for the required energy under variable conditions. The variable conditions are related with the characteristics of lithium-based batteries, such as the temperature of the location of EPS installation, aging, and design margin. The usage of lithium-based battery reduces the cost and installation space and enables the safe and long-term supply of power compared with the use of lead-acid battery.

  • Jeju power system is connected to the mainland power system through HVDC, and receives about half of required electricity through the HVDC lines. Jeju power system already experienced black out when a generator tripped at the moment of the HVDC line faults. But, UFR operated as was expected when HVDC line fault occurred at that time. As the penetration level of wind turbines increases, it is required to set UFR again considering intermittent wind turbin outputs. In this paper, we address a new way of UFR setting through computer simulation.

  • In wireless sensor networks where there is no centralized base station, each node has limited transmission range and the multi-hop routing for transmitting data to the destination is the one of the important technical issues. In particular, the wireless sensor network is not powered by external power source but operates by its own battery, so it is required to maximize the network life through efficient use of energy. To balance the power consumption, the residual power based adaptive power control is required in routing protocol. In this paper, we propose a routing protocol that prolongs the network lifetime by balancing the power consumption among the nodes by controlling the transmit power according to the residual power. We evaluate the proposed routing protocol using extensive simulation, and the results show that the proposed routing scheme can balance the power consumption and prolong network lifetime.

  • For an efficient operation of today's power system, power engineers are required to analyze enormous amount of data. Owing to the development of technology, a variety of power systems computational tools have been developed and commercialized. However, the practical use of computational tools not only requires that people be able to understand the results the tools produce but also extract the required information from the simulation results which generally involves massive amount of information. This paper introduces a novel interface that would complement the drawbacks in the visualization of data of the pre-existing tools and assist the user in readily retrieving the required information, in this case the rotor angle data, of the simulated system thereby making power system analysis more feasible to be effectuated.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure load data for a 55 kW class agricultural tractor during a harvesting operation and to analyze the required power according to the working conditions. A field test was conducted at three different tractor speeds (1.2, 1.3, and 1.4 km·h-1). A load measurement system was developed for the front axles, rear axles, and for power take-off (PTO). The torque and rotational speeds of the axles and PTO were measured during the field test and were calculated as the required power. The results showed that the total required power was in the range of 4.86 - 5.48 kW during the harvesting operation according to the tractor speed, and it was confirmed that this represents a ratio of 8.8 - 10.0% of the engine rated power. Also, it was confirmed that the required power of the axle and PTO increased as the tractor speed increased. In future studies, we plan to supplement the measurement system for a tractor to include a hydraulic system and perform a field test for harvesting various underground crops.

  • Automatically tuned passive filters can improve power quality to a great extent in power systems. A novel three-phase shunt auto-tuned filter is designed to effectively compensate source current harmonics and to provide reactive power required by the non-linear load, which draws a highly reactive, harmonic-rich current from the supply. An artificial neural network (ANN) based controller selects filter component values in accordance with reactive power requirement and harmonic compensation. Traditional passive filters are permanently connected to the system and draw large amounts of source current even under light load conditions. By using auto-tuned filters, the passive filter components can be controlled according to load variations and, hence, draw only required source currents. The selection is done by the ANN with the help of a properly tuned knowledge base to provide instantaneous compensation using a digital controller.

  • As the amount of electric power consumption is increasing rapidly, the power systems are complex and growing larger. It is required that the quality of electricity is better. To satisfy this demands It is required to analyze the data of the fault accurately and then to find a cause and to enforce a countermeasure. We analyzed the fault of transmission & substation installation over 66kV statistically to operate the power system well. We introduced the faults that are classified into the cause, the facilities, the voltage. This paper explains the experience of the fault in electric power coporation that is operating the large power system. This paper will be meaningful. because this paper gives the data of real power system. We wish that the reliability of power suppliment will be improved, as using this paper properly and this paper is helpful to the growth of this field and the development of technology.

  • This study analyzes the mathematical relationship between DC-link voltage and system parameters for shunt active power filters (APFs). Analysis and mathematical deduction are used to determine the required minimum DC-link voltage for APF. A novel adaptive DC-link voltage controller for the three-phase four-wire shunt APF is then proposed. In this controller, the DC-link voltage reference value will be maintained at the required minimum voltage level. Therefore, power consumption and switching loss will effectively decrease. The DC-link voltage can also adaptively yield different DC-link voltage levels based on different harmonic currents and grid voltage levels and thus avoid the effects of harmonic current and grid voltage fluctuation on compensation performance. Finally, representative simulation and experimental results in a three-phase four-wire center-split shunt APF are presented to verify the validity and effectiveness of the minimum DC-link voltage design and the proposed adaptive DC-link voltage controller.

  • This paper is to design an optimum power conversion device for the system required for development of a low cost 3-phase power inverter. For this purpose, in order to meet with endurance required by the industry, failure mode is standardized to guarantee lifetime of a power semiconductor by monitoring real time power loss and to facilitate failure mode analysis. As normality of heat loss of a power semiconductor is identified remaining in a certain range by comparing heat rise slope between that is calculated by using average current or average loss and that is measured at a heat sink, its feasibility is confirmed by experiment.

  • Stirling cycle was actualized as so called ‘hot air engine’. It has been focused again lately as one of measures for exhaust gas emission problem, but as small power engine because of its method of heat addition. Recently marine power plants commenced to meet a stringent environmental restrictions by international convention, Marpol so that diesel engines as main and auxiliarly power plants are urged to be reformed to reduce NOx emission. Author devised a compression ignition engine as a large marine power plants combined with turbo charger based on stirling cycle, and analyzed the performance by means of basic thermodynamic calculation. Analyzed in this paper, were theoretical efficiency, mean effective pressure, required equivalence ratio, gas turbine power ratio, maximum pressure, states of turbo-charger inlet gas and exhaust gas, manifesting that the engine could be proposed as one of the future power plants of marine use.
