  • During the construction of externally prestressed 7-span continuous segmental bridge, cracks beyond permissible limit were found at anchor zone of expansion joint segment. To eliminate this problem, tension side of diaphragm was prestressed by post-tensioning bars in vertical and horizontal direction. To investigate this remedy is acceptable, stresses of reinforcing bars and concrete surface were measured for the real structure in the field. The measurement was performed through each step of prestressing sequence during construction. Also to investigage stresses induced by live load, static load test was performed and the results was analyzed. In this paper it will be presented the procedure and results for this experimental study along with comparison with analytical study.

  • This study is to illustrate the usefulness of Kriging Dimension Reduction Method(KDRM), which is to construct probability distribution of response function in the presence of the physical uncertainty of input variables. DRM has recently received increased attention due to its sensitivity-free nature and efficiency that considerable accuracy is obtained with only a few number of analyses. However, the DRM has a number of drawbacks such as instability and inaccuracy for functions with increased nonlinearity. As a remedy, Kriging interpolation technique is incorporated which is known as more accurate for nonlinear functions. The KDRM is applied and compared with MCS methods in a compression coil spring design problem. The effectiveness and accuracy of this method is verified.

  • The particular market situation provision of the WTO Antidumping Agreement is increasingly invoked against what may be described as "input-dumping," but this potentially violates the current Antidumping Agreement rules. This paper examines the practice and recent changes regarding the PMS provision in the US by critically examining relevant antidumping investigations in the US in light of GATT/WTO jurisprudence. Such US practice has not yet been extensively subjected to scholarly examination. The paper finds that the recent legal change in the US widens the scope and applicability of the PMS provision to cover input subsidies, allowing the use of not only surrogate prices but also surrogate costs. Further, the required standard of evidence to find PMS seems to have been diminished in the recent application. A widespread use of the PMS provision in such a deviant way calls for a fundamental review of the current trade remedy rules of the WTO.

  • Hand posture recognition has been a wide region of applications in Human Computer Interaction and Computer Vision for many years. The problem arises mainly due to the high dexterity of hand and self-occlusions created in the limited view of the camera or illumination variations. To remedy these problems, a hand posture recognition method using 3-D point cloud is proposed to explicitly utilize 3-D information from depth maps in this paper. Firstly, hand region is segmented by a set of depth threshold. Next, hand image normalization will be performed to ensure that the extracted feature descriptors are scale and rotation invariant. By robustly coding and pooling 3-D facets, the proposed descriptor can effectively represent the various hand postures. After that, SVM with Gaussian kernel function is used to address the issue of posture recognition. Experimental results based on posture dataset captured by Kinect sensor (from 1 to 10) demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and the average recognition rate of our method is over 96%.

  • In this paper, we investigate the impact of channel estimation error on the D2D power control algorithm. In the previous work, D2D power control algorithm has been proposed under the assumption that the channel between the transmitter and the corresponding receiver is perfectly estimated. In reality, the channel estimation error is more often the case. The first question is that the power control algorithm designed for perfect channel estimation is still valid under the channel estimation error environment ? The second question is, if it is not valid, what could be the possible remedy for the channel estimation error ? In this paper, to answer the first question, we investigate the impact of the channel estimation error on the power control algorithm. We first review the D2D power control algorithm designed for perfect channel estimation. Then, we model the channel estimation error. Finally, we summarize the main results observed from the analysis of the simulation.

  • This paper concerns an effective dual-channel noise reduction method to increase the performance of speech recognition in a car environment. While various single channel methods have already been developed and dual-channel methods have been studied somewhat, their effectiveness in real environments, such as in cars, has not yet been formally proven in terms of achieving acceptable performance level. Our aim is to remedy the low performance of the single and dual-channel noise reduction methods. This paper proposes an effective dual-channel noise reduction method based on a high-pass filter and front-end processing of the eigendecomposition method. We experimented with a real multi-channel car database and compared the results with respect to the microphones arrangements. From the analysis and results, we show that the enhanced eigendecomposition method combined with high-pass filter indeed significantly improve the speech recognition performance under a dual-channel environment.

  • This paper concerns an effective text-dependent speaker verification method to increase the performance of speaker verification. While various speaker verification methods have already been developed, their effectiveness has not yet been formally proven in terms of achieving acceptable performance levels. This paper proposes a weighted likelihood procedure along with a confidence measure based on subword-based text-dependent speaker verification. Our aim is to remedy the low performance problem in speaker verification by exploring a means to strengthen the verification likelihood via subword-based hypothesis criteria and weighted likelihood method. Experimental results show that the proposed speaker verification method outperforms that of the speaker verification scheme without using the proposed decision by a factor of up to 1.6 times. From these results, the proposed speaker verification method is shown to be very effective and to achieve a reliable performance.

  • This paper proposes an effective method to remedy the acoustic modeling problem inherent in the usual log-normal Parallel Model Composition intended for achieving robust speech recognition. In particular, the Gaussian kernels under the prescribed log-normal PMC cannot sufficiently express the corrupted speech distributions. The proposed scheme corrects this deficiency by judiciously selecting the 'fairly' corrupted component and by re-estimating it as a mixture of two distributions using data-driven PMC. As a result, some components become merged while equal number of components split. The determination for splitting or merging is achieved by means of measuring the similarity of the corrupted speech model to those of the clean model and the noise model. The experimental results indicate that the suggested algorithm is effective in representing the corrupted speech distributions and attains consistent improvement over various SNR and noise cases.

  • Reliability of RC beanls designed for flexure under the provisions of ACI Building Code is analyzed. The results are compared with those obtained previously. It is shown that in some cases the reliability is inadequate and changes substantiallv with reinforcernent ratio. The probability of brittle failure appears to be rather high. The reasons for these phenomena are revealed and some measures to remedy the situation are recommentied. hluch attention is given to the conditions askthey stand at present in Korea.

  • The Objective of this research is to find the optimal design of the Noise Reduction Interference Model (NRIM) which is recently invented. Without optimization, the NRIM has been successful to reduce the urban noise induced by trains and automobiles. While it is used with the barrier on the road, there is a strong desire to reduce noise more. Yet the only remedy is to make the barrier higher with cost increase. Therefore, the optimal design is necessary to reduce noise while maintaining the barrier height. More efficient Genetic Algorithm is used to find the optimal shape of NRIM with the reduction of noise lever up to 15 dB. also BEM is used to verify the optimal design results.
