  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between smartphone addiction and interpersonal competence of college students using social network service(SNS) through smartphones. This study used a descriptive study design. The convenience sample consisted of 502 college students in six cities. The data were collected from May to June in 2012 using Korean Smartphone Addiction Proneness Scale and Interpersonal Competence Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$-test, t-test, analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data. The results showed that 24.8% of SNS users were considered as a risk group, while 75.2% were normal user group. There were no significant differences of interpersonal competence between risk group and normal user group in the SNS users. However, risk group had higher self-disclosure scores than normal user group. The subjects who had higher scores for virtual life, one of smartphone addiction subdomains, had lower interpersonal competence and those with higher smartphone addiction scores showed lower score of managing interpersonal conflict in subdomains of interpersonal competence. These findings would contribute in development of preventive interventions for smartphone addiction and improvement program for interpersonal competence in college students.

With regard to the level of Internet game addiction, 71.2% of the students responded that they were general users, and 6.3%, at high risk for addiction. Mean scores were 103.3 for the high-risk group, 77.7 for the potential risk group, and 55.86 for the general user group. The total mean was 63.74. 2. Mean scores for parent-child attachment levels were 97.1 and 99.6 for father and mother, respectively. • Objectives: Previous studies have reported that internet addiction (IA) is associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) consistently. However, in terms of gender, there are controversial findings. We aimed to investigate the relation between IA and self-acknowledged ADHD traits among female college students in Japan. Methods: The study questionnaire consisted of questions about demographics, Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale-V1.1 Part A (ADHD screener) and Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT). When four or more items are more frequent than the cut-off on ADHD screener, the subject was categorized into students with a positive ADHD screen. We defined students with total IAT score of 70 and higher as IA. Results: A total number of respondents was 369 (mean age: $19.0{\pm}0.7years$). Seventy-seven subjects were screened positive on ADHD screener (20.9%). Students with a positive ADHD screen scored significantly higher on the IAT ($54.2{\pm}14.2$ vs. $42.5{\pm}11.3$). The rates of IA in students with and without a positive ADHD screen were 18.2% and 1.0%, respectively. Conclusion: Results of this study demonstrated the relation between IA and self-evaluated ADHD traits among female college students in Japan. Appropriate education for students on how to use the internet properly will be necessary to prevent IA.

  • This study aimed to demonstrate 'moderated mediation' effect of self-control on the relationship of neuroticism-smart phone addiction-school adaptation. For this purpose, we carried out a survey targeting middle school students who were vulnerable to smart phone addiction, and 1,400 middle school students responded to questionnaire. The results showed that the moderated mediation effect of self-control was statistically significant. In detail, school satisfaction and school performance, the sub-factors of school adaptation, showed significant results but social relation non-significant. Concerning moderating effect of self-control, results supported significantly moderating effect, demonstrating that high level of self-control showed consistently lower level of smart phone addiction than low level of self-control regardless of level of neuroticism. We can find the meanings of this study in having demonstrated, on the one hand, the causal process of smart phone addiction, and on the other, moderating effect and moderated mediation effect on this causal process through interaction between neuroticism and self-control. Finally, limitations and suggestions for future research were discussed.
