  • Fourteen Special high schools for developing talents in Science, Foreign Languages, and Arts in Seoul Metropolitan city were analyzed in terms of their educational objectives, Students screening system, curriculum, teaching-learning methods, teachers, and consistency with higher education. Special high schools in talent area were more or less similar to each other in all the above aspects. However, special high schools in different talent areas were quite different in student screening, teaching-learning methods, teachers, and consistency with higher education. Public schools were more affluent than the private ones. Special high schools in Science, arts and Sports were providing individualized, activity oriented, process-oriented teaching-learning methods, while the Foreign languages high schools excercised teacher-centered, grammar oriented, lecture-focused teaching methods more. Special high schools in arts and sports could have consistency with higher education because the university focuses on talents in the specified field rather than academic scores. In conclusion, the schools have a great deal of rooms to improve in teaching-learning methods with which students can maximize their potential development. However, the special high schools were equipped with better learning environments than regular high schools in many aspects.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of health behavior on oral health of Korean adolescents. Methods: The study subjects were 1,071 adolescents of 13-18 years old from Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2010-2012. Male students were 54.5% and female students were 45.5%. The study consisted of two groups: 13-15 years old and 16-18 years old groups. Data were analyzed by SAS 9.13 version. Results: Those who ingested alcohol had gingival bleeding in 41.0% and 31.0% in those who did not. Those who did not have regular oral examinations had 38.5% of gingival bleeding while those with regular oral examination had 29.7% of gingival bleeding (p<0.01). Students between 16 to 18 years old without oral care products tended to have more gingival bleeding than those who use auxiliary oral hygiene devices (OR=2.658, 95% CI=1.327-5.324). Conclusions: The oral health management of adolescents is closely related to health behavior. Cessation of alcohol ingestion and smoking is very important to improve the adolescent oral health.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of attitude of mothers on the dental health and behavior of dental health management on children on the dental caries of their children, and the questionnaire survey was implemented and analyzed for 202 children in fifth and sixth grades of two elementary schools in Ulsan City along with their mothers with the following outcome. 1. 80 students from entire subject students(39.6%) are subjects of dental caries with the average DT index shown to be $1.78{\pm}1.04$ and tended to have higher in the upper level of grade. 2. In the attitude of dental health management for mother, 95 students(47.0%) visited the dental clinic within 6 months with the main purpose of treatment, rather than preventive work, for 141 students(69.8%), and hey have high level of interests on the teeth condition of their children but they rarely take a close look at the dental condition for their children. 3. The efforts of mothers on preventing the dental caries by mothers showed in the sequence of regular instructions for brushing, limiting the sugar intake, fluorine coating, sealant, regular examination and the like and DT rate will be decreased by these kinds(p<0.05). 4. The number of dental caries of children with the attitude of mother in dental health showed noticeable differences statistically with respect to the brushing method, use of dental sanitation goods, scaling, visit to dental office and others(p<0.05). With the above conclusion, the attitude and behavior of mothers on dental care influences greatly on the dental health of children. Therefore, in order to improve the dental health of children, it would be important to recognize the importance of attitude and behavior of dental health for mothers for positive dental care with the support in policies.

  • Korean National Level Kindergarten Curriculum does not include English education in regular class time. On the other hand, more than 90% kindergarteners are taught English. This study examined the Native English Teachers' (NETs') cultural aspects of their teaching at regular kindergartens in Korea. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with four NETs who were working at regular kindergartens in Korea, their partner Local English Teachers (LETs) and kindergarten principals. All interview data was transcribed and categorized based on the grounded theory method. The results showed that NETs are not required to be culturally prepared to teach in Korean kindergartens. Consequently, most of them do not consider the students' culture in their teaching activities. Moreover, Korean kindergartens, where research participants work, are not prepared well to invite NETs into their regular curriculum. These results will have significant implications on Korean kindergarten's English education practice.

  • Objectives : The purpose of the study is to verify the correlation between teenagers' use of internet and temporomandibular joint disorders(TMJD) because TMJD patients gradually increase in high school students. Methods : Subjects were 221 male high school students attending liberal arts and commercial schools from 9 to 21 of April, 2012. Students completed self-reported questionnaire. Results : TMJD symptoms included crackling joint (32.1%), headache (18.6%), malocclusion (8.1%), and jaw fatigue and muscular aching (7.2%). Students having at least one symptom accounted for 49.8%. Students having at least one poor habit accounted for 83.7% and 34.0% of the students used internet for 3 hours.. Score of students experiencing shoulders and chest pain was $5.13{\pm}1.10$ (p<0.05). Score of TMD afflicting area revealed $4.67{\pm}2.73$ (p<0.05) in mastication pain ($4.13{\pm}2.73$ (p<0.05)) due to long hours of internet use. Score of jaw fatigue related to muscular pain was $4.31{\pm}1.96$ (p<0.01). Duration of computer use was related to perceived TMJD symptoms (r=.153). Long duration of computer use was related to poor oral cavity habits (r=.157). Conclusions : Male high school students can perceive slight TMD which needs self management and regular check-ups and try to prevent TMD by utilizing measurement tools on TMD. Also, this study helps to prevent from worsening TMD by shortening hours of computer utilization.

  • Information literacy education which deals with the ability for recognizing the necessity of information, finding, evaluating, and using the information effectively is essential for the college members to do research or learn effectively. This study intended to suggest the lecture program for information literacy education for college students based on information literacy standards and models suggested by the organizations and scholars domestic and foreign as well as information literacy education cases. Information literacy education should be adopted as a regular curriculum to overcome one time event's limit. Besides, the professional librarians must involve as a role either leading or cooperative in running information literacy education in order to relate the library resources with the education and use them effectively. Finally, when it comes to the strategic aspect of the college library and the librarians' role, the professional librarians' leading or cooperative role is also essential. Additionally, analysis shows that information literacy education needs to be reorganized in contents so that it reflects the college students' patterns to use information and their needs. Lastly, it needs to be thought over in how to lead the students to participate in the course independently and voluntarily.

  • The Korean National Commission for Unesco has helped Korean Unesco Associated Schools undertake environmental studies within the framework of education for international understanding, cooperation and peace from 1991 - 1993. The environmental studies enjoyed participation by nine Associated Schools among 35 throughout the country, with each school on a different theme each year. Environmental studies by the Unesco Associated Schools are differentiated from those by the former continues to work on environmental or Provincial Boards of Education. The former continues to work on environmental education, longer than 1 - 2 years, and they can also capitalize on the international networks of the ASP, which may be instrumental to understanding the worldwide nature of the environmental issues these days. This paper contains a breif explanation of the cases of environmental studies by level of education from primary to teacher education level. It is argued that through the study, the students of Unesco Associated Schools well recognize the seriousness of environmental problems facing mankind and will have positive attitudes and values towards the preservation of our environment. It is also argued that the studies result in a variety of useful teaching/learning methods for environmental education: students visit to polluted areas. survey, composition of works with environmental themes such as posters, poems, organization of discussion by the students on environmental problems, exhibition, international correspondence, etc. The studies also have produced various helpful reaching/learning materials : photos, slides, scrapbooks of articles on environmental issues from newspapers, etc. However, several problems also emerged through the studies. A few of them are described here ; First, focus on the extra-curricula activity rather than regular curricula results in the neglect of the knowledge base of environmental education. Second, only a part of the all 35 Associated Schools have participated in the project. Third, primary and first secondary students have difficulty in using foreign language which is vital for international activities.

  • Objectives : For investigating relationship between oral condition and body mass of adolescent period and helping to make basic data which make oral care systematically while performing health care for adolescent. Methods : This research was carried out by performing oral and physical test of 273 high school students in some reasons from July 2nd to 16th in 2012. Results : There were significant differences, since the more subjects had irregular occlusion, the more they had loosing tooth(p<0.05). There was a significant difference, since when subjects had more numbers of regular occlusion, they had higher BMI and heavier weight.(p<0.001). There are significant different, since when the subjects had worse peridontal condition, they had more numbers of DT(p<0.001). There was a significant difference in occlusion and body mass group, since when subjects had regular occlusion, 46.4% of subjects were standard body weight, 41.0% of subjects were overweight and when subjects needed orthodontics, 52.7% of subjects were standard body weight, 33.8% of subjects were low-weight, and 13.5% of subjects were overweight(p<0.001). In the correlation between oral condition and BMI, DT index showed negative interrelation with FT index(r=-0.179) and positive interrelation with periodontal condition(r=0.221), MT index showed positive interrelation with occlusion(r=0.137) and FT index showed positive interrelation with height(r=0.136). BMI showed highly positive interrelation with weight(r=0.940), and when occlusion was worse, it shows negative interrelation with BMI(r=-0.293). Height showed highly positive interrelation with weight(r=0.447), and when the more subjects had malocclusion, it showed low negative interrelation with weight (r=-0.257). Conclusions : It was considered that an adolescent period forms health habits, so it was important to increase health action through education for growing healthy adult and not only guiding improvement of dietary life for keeping normal weight, but also conducting oral health education for treating regular occlusion of oral condition and prosthetic procedures for loosing tooth right time.
