New Regional Geography and Regional Development in the Age of Globalization (새로운 지역지리학과 세계화시대 지역발전)

  • Geography has been defined traditionally as a discipline on regions, that is, as chorography, which means regional geography. Regional geography, which once withered up with the development of positivist geography, has gained recently its vitality. In particular, as social theories have been introduced actively into geography since the 1980s, new methodologies for regional geography have been suggested through a series of debates, for example, on spatiality, locality, restructuring, and post-modernism, though there remain still some important conceptual issues which have not yet settled down. On the other hand. new regional geography has made its development and significance for regional development in the age of the so-called globalization in the reality. That is, new regional geography has been required for a systematic conceptualization of region and for a theoretical consideration on the dynamic change of regions in the process of globalization. Furthermore, an emphasis can be given to geography education for new regional geography in order to understand new strategies for regional development.

A Study on the Regional Geography in Germany before 1945 (근대 독일 지역지리학의 성립과 발달과정)

  • Since the 1980s, the academic interests on the regional geography have been renewed. This trend is usually called 'Renaissance' of the regional geography. Given this context, to explore diverse theories and methodologies in the regional geography is of much significance. Particularly, to examine the regional geography in Germany widens the understanding of not only the history, strength, and weakness of the regional geography, but also the discipline's status in the field of geography. This paper discusses the regional geography in Germany before World War II, focusing on varieties of theories and methods as well as the historical trajectory of the German regional geography. This discussion may well be significant in that 'Laenderkunde' became an important paradigm in the discipline of geography in Germany during the pre-World War II period.

The Evolution of Regional Geography in France (프랑스 지역지리연구의 전개과정)

  • Modern geography in France since the end of 19th century was begun with regional geography. France after losing the Franco-Prussian war in 1871 had tried to regain the deteriorated national proudness through the colonial expansion. The social and historical contexts in France had encouraged French geographers to engage in detailed small area studies. In particular, after Blache became a faculty at Sorbonne University his idea on integrative rather than selective description on area studies had gained paradigmatic popularity not only in geography but in other disciplines. The regional geography tradition was then firmly established as a science and as an art by Vidalian school until the beginning of Second World War. However, when industrialization and urbanization were the dominant science since the 1950s spatial analytic geography has become popular research tradition replacing the previledged regional geography. Nevertheless, geography in France is still acknowledged as an interesting and valuable discipline since regional geography tradition had accumulated rich knowledges on various regions. As regional geography provides valuable information and helps to understand various world regions, it should be regenerated as a research tradition which are able to fulfill societal needs accruing nowadays. By doing this, geography can rectify its disciplinary identity which has been disintegrated internally by giving too much emphasis on specialties, and melding into nearby disciplines. Our geography education for the chorography in particular focuses mainly on the listings of simple geographic facts, in this regard. Rather than attracting students' concern and motivation, geography is considered as a subject oriented toward simply memorizing geographic facts. To overcome these problems, regional geography should be discussed openly and popularized in research. Regional geographic methods available and results produced in other countries should be introduced, and critical assessments should be made for selective acknowledgment for nurturing our regional geography.

The Part and the Whole : The Ontological Assumptions of Modern Geographical Thought about the Regional Geography (부분과 전체 : 근대 지역지리 방법론의 고찰)

  • Main debates in the modern geographical thoughts had been developed around the regional geography. Because regional geography had been regarded as a raison d'etre of geography, it remains solid status in geography curriculum. But unscientific nature of regional geography was the main problem of modern geography. Modern geography has developed the logical legitimation of regional geography, instead of research procedures. We examine the logic of modern geographical thoughts from 3 worldview. Here we represented the part - the whole relationship as the primary category, and classify these into three type according to the implicit proposition about the relationship. One is the organic view, which assume that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. This view was the primary proposition held by the modem geographers. This view regarded the region as organic complex, and presume the unit region which is irreducible to the elements. The other is mechanic view, which presuppose that the whole is the sum of the parts. This view comprehend region by means of spatial order, in order to simplify the complex reality. Then we compare real condition with assumption. These two view held static assumption. Now, the third view regarded the part- the whole relationship as being dynamic. Most geographers held the organic view, although someone suggests the idea of harmony, the others suggests the idea of complex. But these view presumes the pre-industrial society in which the genre de vie was main principle of social order. Therefore It could not comprehend the regional concept in the context of the urbanization and industrialization.

A Study on the Development of Regional Geography in Germany since 1945 : Traditions and Changes (현대 독일 지역지리학의 전개 -전통과 변화-)

  • The aim of this paper is to examine the development of regional geography (including regional studies) in Germany since 1945 in the context of its traditions and changes. From 1945 to the end of 1960s, in spite of many hies of renovation regional geography has faced critics and fall into a serious crisis. After the 1970s many geographers intensively have searched for the new conception and broadly accepting methodological way of regional geography, and in the advent of 1980s regional geography is regarded as a special form of collecting and presenting spatial informations in terms of the addressee. But in the after-era of german unification and through the new establishment of the Institut for the Regional Geography in Leipzig, a discussion on the research aim and future of regional geography was resumed, and its future direction is open.

  • Since the emerging period in !be Greek era, geography bas been defined as an empirical science in which travel and field trip bas been regarded as its major method for acquiring geographical knowledge or discovering geographical facts on the earth surface. In the contemporary geography, however, this kind of empiricism has been reduced to logical positivism which pursues rigid geographical laws, while diverse implications for empiricism (especially, that implied in the mythic imagination) have been ignored. On the other hand, recently a lot of books on trip for exploring regional cultural environments from the local to the global level have been poured out from outside of geography, and place-marketing has gained some attraction as a new method or strategy for regional development This paper is to consider diverse methodological implications of experience through geographical exploration especially hath from the standpoint of empirical geography and of humanistic geography, and the look on methodologically importance and limitations of place-marketing for regional development In conclusions, it is emphasized that those methodologies should be put together for a genuine exploration of regional cultural environment, and that place-marketing should be understood as a movement for rediscovering regional identity.

The Application of Music to Learning Regional Geography (지역지리 학습에 있어서 음악작품의 활용)

  • The purpose of this paper is to explore a brief review of trends in existing geographical research on music and to analyze music by the 5 themes of geography and to explore a variety of classroom techniques which examine song lyrics for their geographic content. The results of this paper are summarized as followed : Firstly, the trends in geographical research on music can be classified into five areas, the first is on spatial diffusion in music, the second on spatial diffusion in music, the third on regional division in music, the fourth on regional characteristics in music, the fifth on pedagogical tools in the teaching of geography. Secondly, music holds numerous possibilities for regional geographical study. The lyrics of music are littered with geographical term through which song writers impart image of culture, the distinct geographical nature of music lyrics gives rise to many geographical question, also, music lyrics gives place its special character. The results of analyses by the 5 themes of geography indicate that music are useful to learning of regional geography. The application of music to learning regional geography attracts much attentions. In the respect of importance of learning new regional geography, and in the respect of adapting globalization have to be focused on this subject.

  • As the spatial analysis paradigm was established in the discipline during the 1960s, the regional geography became regrded as a nonscientific enterprise. However, school geography has remained an old fashioned regional paradigm. Since then, regional framework which characterized geography curricula in education has been attacked and replaced by more scientific and systematic content. But recently, globalization and localization has rapidly transformed the everyday life of ordinary people. This social change requires regional awareness in school. The purpose of this study is to find relevant learning theories for geography in deucation and to suggest principles of constructing content for regional geography. We must transform the logic of regional concepts into educational content with reference to the learning process. We must examine various propositions for the leaming process. According to the Atomic view of knowledge, the learning process is cumulative, but this can't be applied to sophisticated knowledge. In the Organic view, the learning process is regarded as gradual differentiation. But the learning process is reciprocal, and socially constructed. Applied to geography in education, this view regard "meaningful learning" as social interaction between student's private geographies and content based on public (or academic) geographies.

An analysis on the Regional Geographies of Eight Countries for Improving 'the Geography of Korea' (한국지리 발전방안 마련을 위한 국외 8개국 지리지에 대한 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to derive the implications for improving 'the Geography of Korea' by analyzing the regional geographies of other countries. For this purpose, the regional geographies of eight countries are used: the United Kingdom, France, and Germany in Europe, the United States in America, Japan and China in Asia, and Turkey and Pakistan in Arab. After we select the representative regional geography for each country, its general characteristics, structure, style, and contents are analyzed. Based on the findings, implications for improving 'the Geography of Korea' are summarized in terms of the contents, style, and publication project. These implications suggest that 'the Geography of Korea' needs to be improved by explaining the regional identity in a more refined way and by attracting more readers.

Developing a New Area Study Methodology Suitable to the Globalization Era : With Revision of the Regional Geography of World-Systems. (세계화시대에 적실한 지역연구방법론 모색 -세계체제론적 지역지리학의 보완을 중심으로-)

  • We now live in the new era of globalization which implies the functional integration or increase of inter-dependency between internationally dispersed economic activities. As globalization impacts our various activities and daily lives, social sciences, including, geography, attempt to approach social phenomena from a global perspective. From this point of view. new regional geography, which has been articulated in recent social theory since the 1980s, also must adjust to these new world realities. This paper aims to search for a suitable methodology or approach to area study or regional geography in the era of globalization and to suggest the field of area study that Korean geographers should be concerned with in the future. This paper has reviewed the existing various methodologies of regional geography such as the ecological approach, the landscape approach. the areal differentiation approach, the system approach, the structuration theory, the spatial division of labour, and the world-system, which have deviced in the traditional and new regional geography. Peter Taylor's regional geography of world systems among them has an appropriate rationale of area study in the globalization era, because world-systems theory explains well globalization. However the regional geography of world-systems must be revised to become more suitable to the area-study approach in the globalization era. Firstly, the regional geography of world-systems explains that regions(historical regions) are made by general mechanisms of the capitalist world-economy that operate through social, economic, and political agents within regions such as individuals, households, social classes, economic enterprises, states, political movements, and many other organizations. But these mechanisms can also act through other regional agents of geographical location, natural conditions, and cultural characteristics. Therefore, the generating process of regions needs to be explained by locational, natural, and cultural elements in addition to social, economic, and political elements within regions. Secondly, Taylor's world-systems approach does not express composite characteristics of regions, because it focuses on the economic characteristics or position of regions within the world-economy. Regions incorporated into world-economy systems are not only changed economically, but also changed spatially, socially, culturally, and politically. Hence the world-systems approach must try to analyze these composite characteristics and their change of regions. Thirdly, The world-system approach proposed that the geography of regions within world-systems could be divided and analyzed as three regional types at the geographical scale such as international regions, state regions, and intra-state regions. However such a regionalization is usually not identified distinctly, because the geographical range of regions in world-systems shaped by economic boundaries of the general mechanisms of the world-economy is fluid and also occasionally overlaps with other political regions. Hence I propose that the world-systems approach should choose political boundaries of states and local autonomies in addition to economic boundaries for objective regionalization and systematic areal study. The revised regional geography of world-systems that I have suggested in this paper can be more effectively and properly applied to regional geography or area study in the globalization era. Globalization intensifies competition between states and also between local autonomies in the world. Therefore we must make efforts to study such areas or regions through the revised regional geography of world-system.
