Singwangok, a new single cross variety, was developed by the maize breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2012. This hybrid, consisting of a high yield of grain, was produced by crossing two inbred lines, KS172 and KS173. KS172 is the seed parent and KS173 is the pollen parent of Singwangok. It is a yellow-orange intermediate maize hybrid (Zea mays L.). After the preliminary yield trial and advanced yield trial of Singwangok (Suwon185) in Suwon for 2 years, the regional yield trial of that was subsequently carried out for its growth characteristics and yield at 3 different locations from 2010 to 2012. It was named as Singwangok. The silking date of Singwangok is similar to the check hybrid, Jangdaok. The plant height of Singwangok is similar to Jangdaok, but its ear height ratio is lower than that of Jangdaok. Moreover, it has a resistance to lodging. The ear number per 100 plants of Singwangok is more 17 than that of Jangdaok, whereas the ear length of Singwangok is similar to Jangdaok. Further, the weight of 100 seeds of Singwangok is similar to Jangdaok. It has a moderate resistance to southern leaf blight (Bipolaris maydis) and a strong resistance to northern leaf blight (Exserohilum turcicum). Furthermore, it has a moderate resistance to the black streaked dwarf virus (BSDV), ear lot and corn borer. The grain yield of Singwangok, 7.81 ton/ha, was similar to that of Jangdaok. The seed production of Singwangok was well processed due to the good match during crossing between the seed parent, KS172 and the pollen parent, KS173, in Yeongwol; the F1 seed yield was 3.84ton/ha. Singwangok would be a suitable cultivar to all plain areas in Korea.
In order to obtain the basic information far agricultural utilization of Germanium (Ge), the growth characteristics and germanium absorption in lettuce were investigated with different concentration of germanium in soil. This experiment was carried out in the waster pot $(15,000^{-1}a)$. Germanium concentrations in soil for lettuce cultivation were maintained at 0.26, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0 and $8.0mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. The content of germanium in lettuce was increased with the increase of germanium concentration in soil. When lettuce was cultivated on soil supplemented with Ge $8.0mg\;kg^{-1}$, germanium phytotoxicity (reduction of plant height, No. of leaf and fresh weight) was not observed. When lettuce was cultivated on soil supplemented with Ge 4.0 and $8.0mg\;kg^{-1}$, it germanium content were found 0.75 and $1.27mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. Germanium absorption efficiency of lettuce was not different by germanium concentrations in the soil. When lettuce was cultivated on soil supplemented with Ge 2.0, 4.0 and $8.0mg\;kg^{-1}$, its absorption germanium efficiency was found 0.05, 0.04 and 0.03%, respectively. Germanium contents in different parts of lettuce cultivated with Ge $8.0mg\;kg^{-1}$ were $0.65mg\;kg^{-1}$ on inner leaf and $1.59mg\;kg^{-1}$ on outer leaf.
The purpose of this study is to provide information searching for health promotion, nutrition improvement, and health care of the impaired elderly by ADL(Activity of Daily Living) and IADL(Instrumental Activity of Daily Living). The subjects were divided into the Assistant Needed Group and No Assistant Needed Group for living in line with the responses of ADL(10 items like dressing, washing, move etc.) and IADL(10 items like housekeeping, using transportation, shopping, Phone call etc.). Survey was made for health behavior, health risk habit, dietary management status and diet intake by 24 hr-recall and questionnaire method. 242 subjects were collected in 12 cities or Gun districts in Gyeonggi Province, S. Korea. Survey was carried out by regional home extension workers using interview method. Statistical analyses were made using SAS (Version 8.1). Chi-Square Tests and General Linear Models. The subjects of impaired ADL elderly was 26.5% and it composed 30% of the total male and 22.2% of the total female. The demographic status of the impaired ADL elderly showed no difference from that of the normal elders, elementary school educated (73.4%), with spouse (43.8%) or with adult children(37.5%), using monthly living cost of 500-1,000 thousand won(35.9%). Mean age was 74.05 years compared to 72.25 years of normal elders. However, there was no significant difference from the normal and impaired ADL group, regular exercise(60.0%), with walking (90.0%), no-smoke(54.7%) and no-drink(48.4%). Kind of disease was not different from the one in impaired and normal group, with cardiovascular disease(32.3%), with diabetes mellitus(8.1%), joint lumbago neuralgia(32.3%) and osteoporosis(9.7%). Gastrointestinal complaints of the impaired ADL group were nausea(57.8%), chronic indigestion (23.4%), constipation (14,0%) and vomiting(3.7%). Sleeping time required for the impaired was longer than that for the normal group by 10hours(4.7%) or 8-10hours(20.3%), which consisted 1.7% and 16.6% respectively. Nutrient intake of the impaired ADL group was low compared to normal range elders: Energy(1260kca1), Protein(52.75g). There was gender difference in nutrient intake; the male impaired group showed no significant difference from the normal group but it was significantly lower in female impaired group. These results suggest that low quality of life and low economic status of the impaired ADL elderly require congregate meal in village hall to cover the lack of side dishe variety. And nutrition education program including community assistance would be required for the impaired ADL elderly together with the sufficient food and exercise practice. By operating nutrition education program, the impaired ADL elderly would maintain more enhanced quality of life and ameliorate the ADL capability.
The use of local product foods and fresh-cut products, the dietitian's recognition, the required items and the quality for school foodservice was investigated to increase the consumption of high-quality agricultural products. Data from 578 elementary schools, 228 middle schools and 116 high schools were collected by school foodservice personnels in each regional Education Administration in Gyeong-gi province. The first criteria of buying food materials was reliability/safety for all school foodservice. The second criteria were the origin of the product and freshness/ripeness for elementary and middle schools and high school, respectively. The most important consideration for selecting a supplier was the quality of the material. The appearance/status of the food was the first factor for buying food materials. The origin and the seasonality were very important for buying farm products. Dietitians in Gyeong-gi province recognized the local products, and used them weekly. The advantages of using local products were the quick supply, freshness and safety. On the other hand, the disadvantages were the lack of information and the uncertainty of supply. Sixty eight percent of the subjects had experienced the high-quality agricultural products in school meals, but the frequency was low. The main reasons for not servicing high-quality agricultural products were the high cost and the lack of trust on the quality. Among fresh-cut products, seasonings and root vegetables were purchased most frequently, but leaf vegetables was 5.7% only. The purchase of fresh-cut products was not frequent, but usually satisfied. The advantages of fresh-cut products were the reduced workload and waste, but the reason for not using them were poor hygiene and the high price. The diverse supply system and the promotion of the local product foods would be necessary since the most food materials were purchased through suppliers. In addition, the problems related to the high cost and distrust should be resolved to expand the consumption of the high-quality agricultural products and the fresh-cut vegetables. The institutions for certifying the quality should be needed to increase the confidence of these products.
Soil testing is one of the major strategies for establishing sustainable agricultural practice as it analyzes nutrient contents of soil and determines the amount of nutrients required for crop growth. Soil testing for the field cultivating regional major crops in Korea has been conducting by National Academy of Agricultural Science (NAAS), provincial agricultural research & extension services and agriculture technology centers since 2000. 1,006,227 soil samples were analyzed and uploaded on Korean soil information system (http://soil.rda.go.kr) from 2003 to 2013. Soil pH has changed from 6.1 to 6.2. Organic matter (OM), available (Avail.) phosphate and exchangeable (Exch.) K have decreased from 24 to $23gkg^{-1}$, 541 to $399mgkg^{-1}$ and 0.90 to $0.72cmol_ckg^{-1}$ between 2003 and 2013, respectively. Especially, Exch. Ca contents decreased to $5.7cmol_ckg^{-1}$ in 2009 and increased to $6.2cmol_ckg^{-1}$ in 2013. Ratios of optimal ranges for cropping were 48% for pH, 22% for OM, 26% for Avail. phosphate, and 23, 16, 22% for Exch. K, Ca and Mg in 2013. Ratios of optimal ranges for pH increased and low ranges for OM, Avail. phosphate and Exch. K increased. Frequency distribution was 64% for pH 5.5~7.0, 65% for OM $10{\sim}30gkg^{-1}$, 48% for Avail. phosphate under $300mgkg^{-1}$ and 23, 29, 22% for Exch. K 0.2~0.6, Ca 4.0~6.0 and Mg $1.0{\sim}1.5cmol_ckg^{-1}$.
This study was conducted to determine the optimal extraction condition of temperatures and kinds of extraction solvent, and antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf and organic acid against foodborne microorganisms. The antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract at $60^{\circ}C$ for 6 hour against foodborne microorganisms was stronger than those at $30^{\circ}C\;and\;90^{\circ}C$. Also, the ethanol extract showed stronger antimicrobial activity than those of water and methanol extract. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of the ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf against B. cereus and L. monocytogenes, was $62.5{\sim}125\;{\mu}g/mL$ but, the minimal inhibitory concentration was $250\;{\mu}g/mL$ against S. typhimurium and P. aeruginosa and over $500\;{\mu}g/mL$ against E. coli O157:H7, respectively. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of the lactic, citric, acetic acid and the ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf against B. cereus and L. monocytogenes was 2500, 5000, 1250 and $125\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The combined effect of each organic acid and the ethanol extract against B. cereus was not observed but, synergistic effect was observed against L. monocytogenes. In the meantime, when the ethanol extract was combined with each organic acid at sub-lethal concentration, the combination did not increase the inhibitory effect of the most active single compound alone against E. coli O157:H7, respectively.
Basin analysis is a research field to understand the formation and evolution of sedimentary basins. This task requires various geoscientific datasets as well as numerical and graphical modelling techniques to synthesize results dimensionally in time and space. For basin analysis and modelling in a comprehensive workflow, BasinVis 1.0 was released as a MATLAB-based program in 2016, and recently the software has been extended to BasinVis 2.0, with new functions and revised user-interface. As a case study, this work analyses the southern Vienna Basin and visualizes the sedimentation setting and subsidence evolution to introduce the basin modelling functions of BasinVis 2.0. This is a preliminary study for a basin-scale modelling of the Vienna Basin, together with our previous studies using BasinVis 1.0. In the study area, during the late Early Miocene, sedimentation and subsidence are significant along strike-slip and en-echelon listric normal faults. From the Middle Miocene onwards, however, subsidence decreases abruptly over the area and this situation continues until the Late Miocene. This is related to the development of the pull-apart system and corresponds to the episodic tectonic subsidence in strike-slip basins. The subsidence of the Middle Miocene is confined mainly to areas along the strike-slip faults, while, from the late Middle Miocene, the depocenter shifts to a depression along the N-S trending listric normal faults. This corresponds to the regional paleostress regime transitioning from NE-SW trending transtension to E-W trending extension. This study applies various functions and techniques to this case study, and the modelled results demonstrate that BasinVis 2.0 is effective and applicable to the basin modelling.

Korditwo is a new orchardgrass(Dactylis glomerata L.) variety developed by the National Institute of Animal Science(NIAS) in 2005. To develope the new variety of orchardgrass, 5 superior clones, Dg8533, Dg9518, EDg9133, U8504 and U8519, were selected and polycrossed for seed production. That synthetic variety was designated newly as "Korditwo", and it's agronomic growth characteristics and forage productivity were examined at Suwon from 2001 to 2002, and regional yield trials were conducted in Suwon, Pyungchang, Youngju, Iksan, and Jeju from 2003 to 2005, respectively. "Korditwo" showed medium type growth habit in fall and spring and short in length of flag leaf and upper internode. Plant height of "Korditwo" was similar to that of standard variety, "Ambassador" and heading date was 4 days later than 14th May compared to Ambassador. Characteristics such as winter hardiness, lodging tolerance, disease resistance of "Korditwo" were stronger or better than those of Ambassador, specially in winter hardiness and lodging tolerance. "Korditwo" showed 10% higher dry matter yield(11.3 ton/ha) compared to Amabassador. Nutritive value was appeared to be similar in both varieties.
"Egreen" rye (Secale cereale L.) was developed by National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA. It was released in 2007 because of its excellent earliness and yield potential. Crossing was made by an open pollination with 10 rye lines in 1995. Many lines from the open pollinated population were handled in a mass selection program in subsequent generations. Among them the line 'SR95POP-S1-116-1-1-2'was selected for earliness and promising agronomic appearance and placed in yield trial for two years from 2003 to 2004. In 2005, it was designated "Homil 34" and subjected to regional yield trials. Over 3 years, "Egreen" averaged 8.34 MT ha-1 of forage yield (based on dry matter) harvested at the heading date of check variety "Olhomil", which was superior to other varieties such as "Olhomil" and "Koolgrazer" with an increase of 8% and 10%, respectively. Heading date of "Egreen" was April 22, 3 days earlier than that of "Olhomil". It would be recommended as a winter crop forforage and green manure before planting either maize or rice in Korea.
The curriculum in the vocational training shall be planed and operated on a basis what is the occupational category that the students can be employed after their graduation and the ability necessary to the engagement in their occupations. It needs to collect and analyze the related data between the universities and industries, particularly regional industries synthetically in order to develop the curriculum in the vocational training. The curriculum shall be planned on a basis of the data. As for the data related to the local community, it needs to develop new programs considering the prospect of demand of manpower by the industry, necessary knowledge, technology and attitudes, particularly considering the occupational category available in the employment with a bright prospect hereafter. Also, the contents to improve in the existing curriculum(a change of technology, a form of facilities for experimentㆍpractice, and a type of continuing & further education) shall be investigated and analyzed objectively. Accordingly, this study is to develop the curriculum more systematically in order to foster the character designer specially who to engage in the character industry that increases its role and expectation all the more with the development of animation industries and the extension of markets now. The purpose of this study is to decrease the estrangement between the school education that has been problems and the practical affairs in the field, to foster the special manpower that can satisfy the industries demand.
