  • Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate effects of increased breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) which is the standard measurement of alcohol consumption in sobriety test under current laws on visual acuity and values of objective refraction. Methods: For twenty three males in 20s (average age $21.17{\pm}2.19$ years, body mass index (BMI) $22.09{\pm}2.16$) were selected. Distance and near visual test was performed at BrAC of 0%, 0.05% and 0.08%, and objective refraction with open-field auto-refractometer was also performed at different BrAC. Results: As breath alcohol concentration is increased, distance visual acuity was decreased, which was statistically significant, but near visual acuity was not changed. Also, values of objective refraction tended to be increased towards minus as breath alcohol concentration is increased. Conclusions: As breath alcohol concentration is increased, corrected visual acuity is decreased and refractive power is towards minus, it is necessary that visual acuity test and refraction measurement should be conducted under sober condition.

  • Objectives: This study examined the influence of the resin thickness on the polymerization of silorane- and methacrylate-based composites. Materials and Methods: One silorane-based (Filtek P90, 3M ESPE) and two methacrylate-based (Filtek Z250 and Z350, 3M ESPE) composite resins were used. The number of photons were detected using a photodiode detector at the different thicknesses (thickness, 1, 2 and 3 mm) specimens. The microhardness of the top and bottom surfaces was measured (n = 15) using a Vickers hardness with 200 gf load and 15 sec dwell time conditions. The degree of conversion (DC) of the specimens was determined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Scratched powder of each top and bottom surface of the specimen dissolved in ethanol for transmission FTIR spectroscopy. The refractive index was measured using a Abbe-type refractometer. To measure the polymerization shrinkage, a linometer was used. The results were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test at p < 0.05 level. Results: The silorane-based resin composite showed the lowest filler content and light attenuation among the specimens. P90 showed the highest values in the DC and the lowest microhardness at all depth. In the polymerization shrinkage, P90 showed a significantly lower shrinkage than the rest two resin products (p < 0.05). P90 showed a significantly lower refractive index than the remaining two resin products (p < 0.05). Conclusions: DC, microhardness, polymerization rate and refractive index linearly decreased as specimen thickness linearly increased. P90 showed much less polymerization shrinkage compared to other specimens. P90, even though achieved the highest DC, showed the lowest microhardness and refractive index.

  • Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of prepartum body condition score (BCS) on the milk yield, lipid metabolism, and oxidative status of Holstein cows. Methods: A total of 112 multiparous Holstein cows were divided into 4 groups according to the BCS at 21 days before calving: medium BCS (3.0 to 3.25, MBCS), high BCS (3.5 to 3.75, HBCS), higher BCS (4.0 to 4.25, HerBCS), and highest BCS (4.5 to 5.0, HestBCS). Blood samples were collected on 21, 14, and 7 days before calving (precalving), on the calving day (calving), and on 7, 14, and 21 days after calving (postcalving). The indices of lipid metabolism and oxidative status were analyzed using bovine-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Colostrum were taken after calving and analyzed by a refractometer and milk analyzer. The individual milk yield was recorded every 3 days. Results: The density and levels of immune globulin and lactoprotein of colostrum from Holstein cows in the HestBCS group were the highest (p<0.05). These animals not only had the highest (p<0.05) levels of serum non-esterified fatty acids and beta-hydroxybutyrate, but also had the highest (p<0.05) levels of malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, catalase, vitamin A, and vitamin E. In addition, greater (p<0.05) BCS loss was observed in the HestBCS cows. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the milk yield, lipid metabolism, and oxidative status of Holstein cows are related to prepartum BCS and BCS loss during the transition period. HestBCS cows are more sensitive to oxidative stress and suffer greater loss of BCS after calving, whereas the MBCS animals had better milk yield performance.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relevance of adjusting a urinary sample for urine hippuric correction value and its effects. Urinary biological monitoring data are typically adjusted to a constant creatinine and specific gravity concentration to correct for variable dilutions among spot samples. This study was conducted to evaluate the suitability of adjusting the urinary concentrations of urine creatinine and specific gravity(SG). Methods: We measured the concentrations of hippuric acid, in spot urine samples collected from control(119), case(120) individuals. The value of hippuric acid was adjusted by SG and urinary creatinine(HPLC & Jaffe). Results: The major results were as follows. The concentrations of urinary creatinine and SG for the control group were 1.84 g/L(SD 0.99) for arithmetic mean and 1.56 g/L(GSD 1.86) for geometric mean by HPLC method, 1.57 g/L (SD, 0.82) for arithmetic mean and 1.33 g/L(GSD 1.85) for geometric mean by Jaffe method, 1.028(SD 0.09) for arithmetic mean and 1.02(GSD 1.06) for geometric mean by refractometer. Hippuric acid levels were 0.40 g/L(SD 0.51) by arithmetic mean and 0.20 g/L(GSD 3.59). In that case the exposed group was 1.40 g/L(SD 0.58) for arithmetic mean and 1.28 g/L(GSD 1.55) for geometric mean by HPLC method, 1.27 g/L(SD 0.56) for arithmetic mean and 1.14 g/L(GSD 1.62) for geometric mean by Jaffe method, 1.045 L(SD 0.27) for arithmetic mean and 1.02(GSD 1.13) for geometric mean by refractometer(P<0.05). Hippuric acid levels were 0.67 g/L(SD 0.79) for arithmetic mean and 0.39 g/L(GSD 2.94)(p<0.05). The urine creatinine concentrations were affected by gender(p < 0.01) but SG levels were not affected by gender or age(p>0.05). After adjustment, urine hippuric acid was correlated with creatinine(HPLC & Jaffe)(r=0.723, P<0.05, r=0.708, P<0.05) and SG(r=0.936, P<0.05) and the control group shows significantly higher than the case group. In the case group for adjusted urine hippuric acid was correlated with creatinine(HPLC & Jaffe), (r=0.736, P<0.05), r=0.549, P<0.05), SG(r=0.549, P<0.05). After adjusting urine hippuric acid by urine creatinine(HPLC and Jaffe method) and specific gravity, significant associations were found between the control group and case group, respectively(r=0.832, P<0.05, r=0.845, P<0.05) and (r=0.841, P<0.05, r=0.849, P<0.05). Specific gravity adjustment appears to be more appropriate for variations in the urine creatinine method. Conclusion: we found that urinary creatinine concentrations were significantly affected by gender, and other factors and that care should therefore be exercised when correcting urinary metabolites according to the urinary creatinine concentration in spot urine. It is determined that additional study is needed for biological monitoring.

  • Purpose: This study are to analyze and to compare between pupillary size, reaction time, refractive error, corrected vision, dominant eye, static visual angle (SVA) and kinetic visual acuity (KVA) of male and female college students, to measure KVA of them in full correction and to identify changes of KVA by +0.50 D and -0.50 D spherical power addition respectively in full correction condition. Methods: KVA, SVA, pupillary size, reaction time, refractive error, corrected vision and dominant eye of 40 male and 40 female optical science students were measured by utilizing KOWA AS-4A, reaction time measurement program, subjective refractometer, and objective refractometer, and KVAs were measured when +0.50 D/-0.50 D were added in both eyes respectively. Results: Binocular KVA of whole subjects was $0.45{\pm}0.22$, and in monocular KVAs were $0.36{\pm}0.19$ for right eye and $0.34{\pm}0.19$ for left eye, and binocular KVA was significantly higher than monocular KVA. It appeared that the better SVA was, the better KVA was in significant way, and in terms of refractive error the less myopia amount was, the better KVA was, but it was not significant statistically. The lower astigmatism was, the slightly and significantly higher KVA was when dividing between equal or less than -1.00 D astigmatism group and over -1.00 D astigmatism group. In resulting from correction condition of refractive error KVAs were $0.45{\pm}0.22$ for full correction, $0.26{\pm}0.15$ for +0.50 D addition, $0.48{\pm}0.22$ for -0.50 D addition which indicates that KVA in over myopia correction was significantly the highest and followed by full correction and under correction. Similar findings were revealed in both male and female, and KVA of male was better than female in comparing between male and female. There was no significantly different KVA between dominant eye and non-dominant eye. Conclusions: Accordingly, it is concluded that KVA is related with far distance SVA, astigmatism amount, and refractive error amount except a dominant eye. Through this research, it was found that prescription for enhancing KVA is to make full correction or to overcorrect slightly myopia.
