  • Numerical analysis was performed using FIMMWAVE to optimize the specifications of Si3N4/SiO2 slot and ridge-slot optical waveguides based on confinement factor and effective mode area. The optimized specifications were confirmed based on sensitivity in terms of the refractive index of the analyte. The specifications of the slot optical waveguide, i.e., the width of the slot and the width and height of the rails, were optimized to 0.2 ㎛, 0.46 ㎛, and 0.5 ㎛ respectively. When the wavelength was 1.55 ㎛ and the refractive index of the slot was 1.3, the confinement factor and effective mode area of 0.2024 and 2.04 ㎛2, respectively, were obtained based on the optimized specifications. The thickness of the ridge and the refractive index of the slot were set to 0.04 ㎛ and 1.1, respectively, to optimize the ridge-slot optical waveguide, and the confinement factor and effective mode area were calculated as 0.1393 and 2.90 ㎛2, respectively. When the confinement coefficient and detection degree of the two structures were compared in the range of 1 to 1.3 of the analyte index, it was observed that the confinement coefficient and sensitivity were higher in the ridge-slot optical waveguide in the region with a refractive index less than 1.133, but the reverse situation occurred in the other region. Therefore, in the implementation of the integrated optical biochemical sensor, it is possible to propose a selection criterion for the two parameters depending on the value of the refractive index of the analyte.

  • This paper presents a theoretical and experimental investigation of the transmission and sensing characteristics of the biconically tapered cladded multimode fibers. The beam propagation method was used to examine the transmission characteristics with various structural parameters. The results show that the transmission of the biconically tapered cladded multimode fibers is sensitive to the mode of the input optical beam and the refractive index of the external medium. A refractive index sensor for the external medium was proposed based on the theoretical analysis, and its feasibility was demonstrated experimentally.

  • A 250mm stroke aerostatic stage, which detects position with laser scale and is driven by linear motor, is made and analyzed positioning error in 20$\pm$ 0.5 $^{\circ}C$ controlled atmosphere, aiming at investigating positioning characteristic of ultra-precision stage. We prove this aerostatic stage has a 10nm micro step resolution by experiment. By means of analyzing laser interferometer system, the scale of measuring error is about 0.2-0.4$\mu\textrm{m}$ according to refractive index error from missing the temperature change. To improve laser interferometer system, compensate refractive index error using measuring data from thermocouple. And, confirm 0.10$\mu\textrm{m}$ repeatability and 0.13 $\mu\textrm{m}$ positioning accuracy using the compensating refractive index. Also, we confirm 0.07 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ repeatability of the stage using capacitive displacement sensor.

  • A highly sensitive refractive index bio-sensor based on grating-assisted strip directional coupler (GASDC) is proposed. The sensor is designed using two asymmetric strip waveguides with a top-loaded grating structure in one of the waveguides. Maximum light couples from one waveguide to the other at the resonance wavelength satisfying phase-matching condition (PMC), and it shows that the change in phase-matching condition with the change in refractive index of the analyte medium in the cover region can be used as a measure of the sensitivity. The proposed sensor will be an on-chip device with a high refractive index sensitivity, and the sensor configuration offers a low propagation loss, thereby enhancing the sensitivity. Furthermore, variation of the sensitivity with the waveguide parameters of sensor is evaluated to optimize the design.

  • The curing of thermoset resin is accompanied with the changes in chemical and physical properties. The cure monitoring techniques can be designed by tracing these property changes. This paper presents the cure monitoring technique with fiber optic sensors to detect the change of refractive index during the polymerization process of engineering epoxy resin. The fiber optic sensor system was developed to measure the reflection coefficient at the interface between the fiber optic and the resin. The correlation between the sensor output and the degree of cure was performed following Lorentz-Lorenz law. The isothermal data from the sensors are compared with the data from differential scanning calorimeter.

  • We proposed and demonstrated a fiber optic sensor for detecting the thermo-optic coefficient of a liquid, based on a cascade of two different FBGs. One of the two FBGs was etched, and its cladding was removed, for evanescent wave coupling with an external liquid. The Bragg wavelength of the non-etched FBG was used as a reference for the temperature of the surrounding liquid. The refractive index (RI) and thermo-optic (T-O) coefficient of a liquid can be detected from the difference between the Bragg wavelengths of the two FBGs, and the variation of the difference in accordance with temperature.

  • This paper reports a side-coupled asymmetric $1{\times}2$ plastic optical fiber coupler for an optical sensor system. The dependence of the optical power coupling ratio on the coupling angle and refractive index of the adhesion layer in both the forward and backward directions was examined based on the geometrical optics. It was confirmed experimentally that the coupling ratios can be optimized by controlling the coupling angle and refractive index of the adhesion layer. A maximum forward coupling efficiency > 93% was achieved.

  • In this paper, the sensing characteristics of a double cladding fiber (DCF) long-period fiber grating (LPFG) to the surrounding refractive index (SRI) are studied. The outer cladding of the DCF plays the role of the overlay, thus, the mode transition (MT) phenomenon of DCF can be induced by etching the outer cladding radius instead of coating overlays. The response characteristics of the effective refractive index (ERI) of the cladding mode to the outer cladding radius are analyzed. It is found that in the MT range, the change rate of ERIs of cladding modes is relatively larger than that for other ranges. Further, based on the features of the mode transition region (MTR), the phase-matching curve of the 11th cladding mode is investigated, and the response of the DCF-LPFG to the SRI is characterized by the change of wavelength intervals between the dual peaks under different outer cladding radii. The numerical simulation results show that the SRI sensitivity is greatly improved, which is available to 3484.0 nm/RIU with the fitting degree 0.998 in the SRI range of 1.33-1.37. The proposed DCF-LPFG can provide new theoretical support for designing the DCF-LPFG refractive index sensor with excellent performances of sensitivity, linearity and structure.

  • A refractometric glucose biosensor incorporating a vertically coupled microring resonator in polymers was proposed and realized. The ring was covered with a target analyte of glucose solution with a certain concentration, so that its effective refractive index could be altered and, as a result, the resonance wavelength of the sensor was shifted. Therefore the concentration of the glucose solution can be estimated by observing the shift in the resonance wavelength. Two schemes were exploited for enhancing the sensitivity of the sensor. First, the effective refractive index of the polymeric waveguide used for the resonator sensor was adjusted to approach that of the target analyte as best as possible. Second, the ring waveguide, which serves as a crucial sensing part, was appropriately over-etched to enlarge its contact area with the analyte. The proposed resonator sensor was designed with the beam propagation method. The refractive indices of the core and cladding polymer involved were 1.430 and 1.375 respectively, leading to the waveguide's effective refractive index of ${\sim}1.390$, which is faiirly close to that of the glucose solution of ${\sim}1.333$. The prepared ring resonator with the $400-{\mu}m$ radius exhibited the free spectral range of 0.66 nm, the bandwidth of 0.15 nm, and the quality factor of 10,000. For the sensor operating at 1,550 nm wavelength, the achieved sensitivity was as great as 0.28 pm/(mg/dL), which is equivalent to 200 nm/RIU.

  • We studied an integrated-optic biosensor configuration that operates at a wavelength of 0.63 ㎛ based on the evanescent-wave and two horizontal mode power coupling of Si3N4 rib-optical waveguides formed on a Si/SiO2/Si3N4/SiO2 multilayer thin films. The sensor consists of a single-mode input waveguide, followed by a two-mode section which acts as the sensing region, and a Y-branch output for separating the two output waveguides. The coupling between the two propagating modes in the sensing region produces a periodically repeated optical power exchanges along the propagation. A light power was steered from one output channel to the other due to the change in the cladding layer (bio-material) refractive index, which affected the effective refractive index (phase-shift) of two modes through evanescent-wave. Waveguide analyses based on the rib optical waveguide dimensions were performed using various numerical computational software. Sensitivity values of 12~23 and 65~165 au/RIU, respectively for the width and length of 4 ㎛, and 3841.46 and 26250 ㎛ of the two-mode region corresponding to the refractive index range 1.36~1.43 and 1.398~1.41, respectively, were obtained.
