  • In television stereo system, to produce the sound image for spatial impression is too difficult because of the narrow distence between two speakers. A method of widening the sound image using precedence effect was introduced but it didn't work effectively in low frequency band. In this paper, we propose a new method to produce an expanded sound image in full band of audio requency in band sound is expanded by phase shifting method and a higher frequency band sound is expanded by reflection. In simulation and experiment, the proposed system guarantees useful effect of sound image expansion in television stereo system.

  • To investigate the characteristics of the sound-pipe on the top of King Song-Dok bell, using computer simulation, the throat impedance was evaluated for the straight pipe and conical pipes with varying taper angles. When sound propagates in a rigid walled, unflanged circular pipe with wavelength larger than radius, the acoustic motion is planar, much as in a bar. The incident sound waves are reflected at the end of pipe and some of them are transmitted. The reflection coefficient and radiation impedance of the sound-pipe of King Song-Dok bell were calculated, and the results demonstrated that the high frequency sound is radiated through the sound-pipe. It behaves like a frequency filter.

  • In television stereo system, to produce a realistic sound effect is very difficult because the distance between stereo speakers is very narrow. Many signal processing methods of widening the sound image for spatial impression have been studied. One of the methods of widening the sound image is using the Precedence Effect by reflected sound. However, this method does not work effectively in lower frequencies because of directivity of a speaker. In this paper, we propose an effective method of expanding stereo image using Precedence Effect and Phase Shifting method to produce a whole band frequency sound expansion. In experiments, we confirm the usefulness of the proposed stereo sound image expansion system.

  • This study was conducted to determine the sound paths and transmitted sound level in house. An air-conditioner system was selected a typical sound source. The measured transmission loss data shows that the apertures have an significant effect on the transmitted noise and comparable with the existing theoretical data. Therefore the complex aperture was substitute to quantitative apertures approximately. An effective simulation method, ray tracing and mirror image source method, was employed in the prediction of transmitted sound level. The measured results were efficiently reflected on the simulated results. So it is important that measuring the acoustic parameter prior to the prediction of the transmitted sound level in the house.

  • This paper presents a method to simulate noise propagation by a computer for outdoor environment. Sound propagated in 3 dimensional space generates reflected waves whenever it hits boundary surfaces. If a receiver is away from a sound source, it receives multiple sound waves which are reflected from various boundary surfaces in space. The algorithm being developed in this paper is based on a ray sound theory. If we get 3 dimensional geometry input as well as sound sources, we can compute sound effects all over the boundary surfaces. In this paper, we present two approaches to compute sound: the first approach, called forward tracing, traces sounds forwards from sound sources. while the second approach, called geometry based computation, computes possible propagation routes between sources and receivers. We compare two approaches and suggest the geometry based sound computation for outdoor simulation. Also this approach is very efficient in the sense we can save computational time compared to the forward sound tracing. Sound due to impulse-response is governed by physical environments. When a sound source waveform and numerically computed impulse in time is convoluted, the result generates a synthetic sound. This technique can be easily generalized to synthesize realistic stereo sounds for virtual reality, while the simulation result is visualized using VRML.

  • Four different wedge angle absorptive tiles were designed and made, and the magnitudes of the reflected acoustic fields by the wedge shaped underwater sound absorptive tiles were measured. The minimum magnitude was found at the angle of 30$^{\circ}$ and the maximum of it was found at the wedge angle of 120$^{\circ}$ from measured the reflected acoustic fields at the front sides of the tiles. The fact that as wedge angle of the absorptive tile increases, the reflection coefficient is increasing is verified. The measured reflected acoustic fields were not dependent on the frequency in the range of 10kHz~30kHz used in this experiment for the same wedge angle tile. The measured reflected acoustic fields at the back sides of the tiles show that they are independent from both type of the absorptive tiles and the frequencies used in the experiments. The measured values and the computed values by the numerical model for the reflected acoustic fields of the wedge shaped absorptive tiles are fairly well comparable with one another.

  • Identification of noise sources, their locations and strengths, have been taken great attention. The method that can identify noise sources normally assumes that noise sources are located at a free field. However, the sound in a reverberant field consists of that coming directly from the source plus sound reflected or scattered by the walls or objects in the field. In contrast to the exterior sound field, reflections are added to sound field. Therefore, we have to consider the reverberation effect on the source identification method. The main objective of this paper is to identify noise source in the reverberant field. At fist, we try to identify noise sources in a rigid wall enclosure using the spherical beamforming method. In many case of practical interest, the wall has an admittance so that complex reflection process occurred. In this paper, we assumed the complex reverberant field in the enclosure to be the sum of plane waves with random incidence and magnitude. Then the effects of reverberant field at interior source identification have been studied theoretically as well as experimentally

  • The word "soundscape" proposed by Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer is now became very popular. So various soundscape design based on soundscape idea are carried on worldwide for acoustic ecology. Also in Korea, several soundscape design were made for the public spaces such as river, park and bridge but, basic concept behind soundscape design was not reflected and studied sufficiently. In that sense, this study aims to arrange the concept of soundscape design process and to review the design proposals of Gwangju River. In this process, the reproduction concept of soundscape, natural sound, light with sound, cultural and historical sound and etc. were classified and the final design was proposed to recover the natural environment and harmonize the sound with surroundings as creative soundscape.
