The effect of the concentric solid tube inserted inside the vibrator on the sound field distribution was analyzed for the sound waves focused on the center axis in the fluid - filled cylindrical piezoelectric transducer. The sound waves radiated from the inside of the cylindrical piezoelectric vibrator are transmitted through the fluid medium and are reflected or transmitted on the wall surface of the solid tube, and are focused on the central axis. At this time, the sound field distribution centered on the acoustic tube varies depending on the acoustic impedance and the thickness of the solid tube. In order to theoretically analyze this, the transfer matrix for each medium is derived, and the sound pressure level at the center axis is theoretically analyzed. For the acrylic tube with various thicknesses, the changing trend in the sound pressure level measured on the central axis agrees well with the result of the theoretical analysis, and it confirmed that the sound pressure formed at the center changes very sensitively with the thickness of the solid tube.

This paper describes the PI controller design based on a practical transfer function model for centrifugal water chillers. The rotational speed of a compressor and the opening angle of an electronic expansion valve were simultaneously regulated as manipulated variables to maintain temperature reference and to ensure high efficiency of the chiller. The COP according to the change in each variable was investigated by performing some static experiments, and it was reflected in the PI controller design to accomplish the high efficiency control. Especially, the practical transfer function model of the chiller was built based on the dynamic experimental data considering the strong inherent non-linearity and complexity of the chiller system. The validity of the designed PI controller was proven by some experimental results using the test facility and the results were also compared to the conventional evaporating pressure control results.
The ignition of ethanol-oxygen-argon mixture was studied in reflected shock waves over the temperature range of 1281-1625 K and the pressure range of 0.69-1.06 bar. The ignition delay time was measured by the sudden increase of pressure profile and the radiation emitted by OH radicals. The relationship between the ignition delay time and the concentrations of ethanol and oxygen was determined in the form of mass-action expressions with an Arrhenius temperature dependence. In contrast to the behavior observed in methanol, ethanol acts to inhibit rather than accelerate its own ignition. Several kinetic mechanisms proposed for ethanol oxidation at high temperatures have been tested by the computer simulation.

This paper proposes an ultrasonic measurement method for measurement of linear interfacial stiffness of contacting surface between two steel plates subjected to nominal compression pressures. Interfacial stiffness was evaluated by using shear waves reflected at contact interface of two identical solid plates. Three consecutive reflection waves from solid-solid surface are captured by pulse-echo method to evaluate the state of contact interface. A non-dimensional parameter defined as the ratio of their peak-to-peak amplitudes are formulated and used to calculate the quantitative stiffness of interface. Mathematical model for 1-D wave propagation across interfaces is developed to formulate the reflection and transmission waves across the interface and to determine the interfacial stiffness. Two identical plates are fabricated and assembled to form contacting surface and to measure interfacial stiffness at different states of contact pressure by means of bolt fastening. It is found from experiment that the amplitude of interfacial stiffness is dependent on the pressure and successfully determined by employing pulse-echo ultrasonic method without measuring through-transmission waves.

Improved far field type(improved type) megasonic applicable to the cleaning equipment of single wafer processing type has been developed. In this study, to improve the uniformity of acoustic pressure distribution(APD), we utilize far field with relatively uniform APD, piezoelectric ceramic with a triangle hole in its center to prevent standing wave resulted from radial mode, and reflected wave from the wall of waveguide. On the basis of these methods, two analysis models of improved type were designed to which piezoelectric ceramic of different shape of electrode attached, and APD were analyzed by means of finite element method, and then one of them was selected by analysis results, finally, the selected model was fabricated. Test results show that the fabricated is better in the uniformity of APD than the imported and the conventional, also the fabricated shows high particle removal efficiency of 92.3% using DI water alone as a cleaning solution.
A method based on transient shear flow dynamics of red cell aggregates was developed to investigate reversible re-aggregation processes with decreasing shear flow. In the microchannel-flow aggregometry, the aggregated red blood cells that are subjected to continuously decreasing shear stress in microchannel flow were measured with the use of a laser-scattering technique. Both the laser-backscattered intensity and pressure were simultaneously measured with respect to time, resulting in shear stress ranging from $0{\sim}35\;Pa$ for a time period of less than 30 seconds. The time dependent recording of the backscattered light intensity (syllectogram) yielded an upward convex curve with a peak point, which reflected the transition threshold of aggregation in the RBC suspensions. Critical-time and critical-shear stress corresponding to the peak point were examined by varying the initial pressure-differential and the micro channel depth, and these results showed good potential for being used as new aggregation indices. In the present study, these newly proposed indices were also validated by differentiating the effect of fibrinogen on RBC aggregation and then these indices were compared to the conventional indices that were measured by a rotational aggregometer.
The dams are huge structures storing a large amount of water and failures of them cause especially irreparable loss of lives during the earthquakes. They are named as a group of structures subjected to fluid-structure interaction. So, the response of the fluid and its hydrodynamic pressures on the dam should be reflected more accurately in the structural analyses to determine the real behavior as soon as possible. Different mathematical and analytical modelling approaches can be used to calculate the water hydrodynamic pressure effect on the dam body. In this paper, it is aimed to determine the dynamic response of concrete gravity dams using different water modelling approaches such as Westergaard, Lagrange and Euler. For this purpose, Sariyar concrete gravity dam located on the Sakarya River, which is 120km to the northeast of Ankara, is selected as a case study. Firstly, the main principals and basic formulation of all approaches are given. After, the finite element models of the dam are constituted considering dam-reservoir-foundation interaction using ANSYS software. To determine the structural response of the dam, the linear transient analyses are performed using 1992 Erzincan earthquake ground motion record. In the analyses, element matrices are computed using the Gauss numerical integration technique. The Newmark method is used in the solution of the equation of motions. Rayleigh damping is considered. At the end of the analyses, dynamic characteristics, maximum displacements, maximum-minimum principal stresses and maximum-minimum principal strains are attained and compared with each other for Westergaard, Lagrange and Euler approaches.
Failure criterion is a parameter to represent the resistance to failure of locally wall thinned pipe, and it depends on material characteristics, defect geometry, applied loading type, and failure mode. Therefore, accurate prediction of integrity of wall thinned pipe requires a failure criterion adequately reflected the characteristics of defect shape and loading in the piping system. In the present study, the finite element analysis was performed and the results were compared with those of pipe experiment to develop a sound criterion for failure of internally wall thinned pipe subjected to combined pressure and bending loads. By comparing the predictions of failure to actual failure load and displacement, an appropriate criterion was investigated. From this investigation, it is concluded that true ultimate stress criterion is the most accurate to predict failure of wall thinned pipe under combined loads, but it is not conservative under some conditions. Engineering ultimate stress estimates the failure load and displacement reasonably for al conditions, although the predictions are less accurate compared with the results predicted by true ultimate stress criterion.

Explosion experiments were conducted using a rectangular concrete structure filled with hydrogen-air mixture (29.0%). In addition, the effect of ignition location on explosion was investigated. The impact on overpressure and flame was increased with the increasing distance of the ignition source from the vent. Importantly, depending on the ignition location the incident pressure was up to 24.4 times higher, while the reflected pressure was 8.7 times higher. Additionally, a maximum external overpressure of 30.01 kPa was measured at a distance of 2.4 m from the vent, predicting damage to humans at the injury level (1% fatality probability). Whereas, no significant damage would occur at a distance of 7.4 m or more from the vent.
Pressurized membrane module systems, including hollow fiber type of Microfiltration (MF) and Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are being increasingly used in drinking water treatment due to their high removal efficiency of pathogen. However, when fibers are damaged in pressurized membrane system, the pathogen will be able to penetrate the membrane. Therefore, it is essential to guarantee the regulatory requirements for water quality by an effective on-line or off-line condition integrity monitoring methods. Recently, pressure decay test (PDT) which is one of membrane integrity tests has been reflected to drinking water treatment plants using pressurized membrane module. In this paper, three different method were used to perform PDT and three different sensitivity values were analyzed through experiments. Three types of direct integrity test methods were applied to pressure feed side, filtrate side and bidirectional pressure decay test. The results of these experiments show that the sensitivity was increasing when the volume of pressurized gas was decreasing. The sensitivity is inversely proportional to the gas volume. Furthermore, it is desirable to increase pressure difference between feed side and permeate side in order to achieve higher sensitivity in the PDT by membrane damage.
