  • Consider the problem of estimating the reliability of a multicomponent stress-strength system which functions if at least r of the k identical components simultaneously function. All stresses and strengths are assumed to be independent random variables with two parameter Weibull distributions. First, we derive reference priors and probability matching priors which are noninformative priors. We next investigate sufficient conditions for propriety of posteriors under reference priors and probability matching priors. Finally, we provide, using these priors, some numerical results for Bayes estimates of the reliability by applying Gibbs sampling technique.

  • We consider the problem of estimating the system reliability using noninformative priors when both stress and strength follow generalized gamma distributions with index, scale, and shape parameters. We first derive group-ordering reference priors using the reparametrization. We next provide the sufficient condition for propriety of posterior distributions and provide marginal posterior distributions under those noninformative priors. Finally, we provide and compare estimated values of the system reliability based on the simulated values of parameter of interest in some special cases.

  • Consider the problem of estimating the system reliability using noninformative priors when both stress and strength follow generalized gamma distributions. We first treat the orthogonal reparametrization and then, using this reparametrization, derive Jeffreys'prior, reference prior, and matching priors. We next provide the suffcient condition for propriety of posterior distributions under those noninformative priors. Finally, we provide and compare estimated values of the system reliability based on the simulated values of the parameter of interest in some special cases.

  • Bayes estimates of reliability for the stress-strength system are obtained with respect to LINEX loss function. A reference prior distribution of the reliability is derived and Bayes estimates of the reliability are also obtained. These Bayes estimates are compared with corresponding estimates under squared-error loss function.

  • This study presents methods to estimate elastic-plastic crack opening displacement (COD) fur circumferential through-wall cracked pipes for the Leak-Before-Break (LBB) analysis of pressurized piping. Proposed methods are based not only on the GE/EPRI approach but also on the reference stress approach. For each approach, two different estimation schemes are given, one for the case when full stress-strain data are available and the other fur the case when only yield and ultimate tensile strengths are available. For the GE/EPRI approach a robust way of determining the Ramberg-Osgood (R-O) parameters is proposed, not only fur the case when detailed information on full stress-strain data is available but also for the case when only yield and ultimate tensile strengths are available. The COD estimates according to the GE/EPRI approach, using the R-O parameters determined from the proposed R-O fitting procedures, generally compare well with the published pipe test data. For the reference stress approach, the COD estimates according to the method based on both full stress-strain data and limited tensile properties are in good agreement with pipe test data. In conclusion, experimental validation given in the present study provides sufficient confidence in the use of the proposed method to practical LBB analyses even though when information on material's tensile properties is limited.

  • Recently, a novel stress sensor, which utilizes the elasto-magnetic (EM) effect of ferromagnetic materials, has been developed to measure stress in steel cables and wires. In this study, the effectiveness of this EM based stress sensors for monitoring of the cable tension force of a real scale cable-stayed bridge was investigated. Two EM stress sensors were installed on two selected multi-strand cables in Hwa-Myung Bridge, Busan, South Korea. Conventional lift-off test was conducted to obtain reference cable tension forces of two test cables. The reference forces were used to calibrate and validate cable tension force measurements from the EM sensors. Tension force variations of two test cables during the second tensioning work on Hwa-Myung Bridge were monitored using the EM sensors. Numerical simulations were conducted to compare and verify the monitoring results. Based on the results, the effectiveness of EM sensors for accurate field monitoring of the cable tension force of cable-stayed bridge is discussed.

  • Objectives : This study was purposed to estimate prevalence of upper extremity musculoskeletal symptoms, level of occupational stress and their relationship among dental hygienists. Methods : This questionnaire study was performed during May to October 2010 with 317 dental hygienists worked in Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do recruited as study population. The occupational stress and upper extremity musculoskeletal symptoms were accessed using questionnaire of the Korean Occupational Stress Scale and musculoskeletal symptoms from the Korea Occupational Safety Health Agency. Data analysis was performed with the descriptive analysis, chi-square test, and multiple logistic regression analysis using SPSS(ver 19.0K)program. Results : The prevalence of upper extremity musculoskeletal symptoms and the level of occupational stress were 79.2% and $52.67{\pm}4.86$ in dental hygienists. By multiple logistic regression analysis, job insecurity(OR=2.86, 95% CI: 1.38-5.94 in stress high risk group; reference-stress low risk group) and organizational system(OR=3.32, 95% CI: 1.55-7.08 in stress high risk group; reference-stress low risk group) were associated with upper extremity musculoskeletal symptoms in dental hygienists. Conclusions : The overall prevalence of upper extremity musculoskeletal symptoms and level of occupational stress in dental hygienists were relatively high and some sub-scales of occupational stress were related with upper extremity musculoskeletal symptoms. Not only previously reported risk factors of musculoskeletal symptoms but also occupational stress should consider to prevent and improve upper extremity musculoskeletal symptoms in dental hygienists.

  • This paper provides approximate J estimates for off-centred, circumferential through-wall cracks in cylinders under bending and under combined tension and bending. The proposed method is based on the reference stress approach, where the dependence of elastic and plastic influence functions of J on the cylinder/crack geometry, the off-centred angle and strain hardening is minimised through the use of a proper normalising load. Based on published limited FE results for off-centred, circumferential through-wall cracks under bending, such normalising load is found, based on which the reference stress based J estimates are proposed for more general cases, such as for a different cylinder geometry and for combined loading. Comparison of the estimated J with extensive FE J results shows overall good agreements for different crack/cylinder geometries and for combined tension and bending, which provides sufficient confidence in the use of the proposed method to fracture mechanics analyses of off-centred circumferential cracks. Furthermore, the proposed method is simple to use, giving significant merits in practice.

  • The present paper provides an engineering J estimation equation for surface cracked plates under combined bending and tension. The proposed equation is based on the reference stress approach, and the most relevant normalising loads to define the reference stress for accurate J estimations are given for surface cracked plates under combined bending and tension. Comparisons with J results from extensive 3-D FE analyses, covering a wide range of crack geometry, plate geometry and loading combination, show overall good agreement not only at the deepest point but also at arbitrary points along the crack front. for pure tension, agreement between the estimated J and the FE results is excellent, even at the surface point. On the other hand, for pure bending and combined bending and tension, the estimated J values become less accurate for locations close to the surface point. Thus the results in this paper will be useful to assess short-term fracture or low cycle fatigue of surface defects in plates under combined bending and tension.

  • Three dimensional, elastic-plastic finite element(FE) analyses for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes under combined tension and bending are performed using actual tensile data of stainless steel, for two purposes. The first one is to validate the recently-proposed enhanced reference stress (ERS) method to estimate the J-integral and COD for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes under combined tension and bending. The second one is to compare those results with the GE/EPRI estimations. The FE results of the J-integral and the COD, resulting from six cases of proportional and non-proportional combined tension and bending, compare very well with those estimated from the proposed method. Excellent agreements of the proposed method with the detailed FE results provide sufficient confidence in the use of the proposed method to the Leak-Before-Break(LBB) analysis of through-wall cracked pipes under combined tension and bending.
