  • Natural nonwoven silk fabric has attracted researchers' attention owing to its unique properties as a biomaterial. It is fabricated by reeling, wetting, and hot pressing natural silk filament from silkworm cocoons. In this study, silkworm cocoons were immersed in water at different temperatures for various durations to examine the effects of wet treatment on their crystallinity and morphology. As the treatment temperature and time increased, the cocoon's silk filament separation became more evident, and fibroin strands were observed in it. The crystallinity indexes of the silkworm cocoons increased until a treatment time of 2 h and remained constant thereafter. The increase in the crystallinity index using wet treatment was enhanced by increasing the treatment temperature. Although the weight loss of the silkworm cocoon was insignificant until 40℃, it was appreciable above this temperature, and the degree of weight loss constantly increased with increases in the treatment temperature and time.

  • Solar/absorption cooling system was analyzed and its operating condition was examined. For the system, the optimum size of absorption refrigerator and collector area should be determined. As the temperature of water supplied to the generator increases, the collector efficiency decreases whereas the coefficient of performance of absorption refrigerator increases up to a certain point, and vice versa for decreasing of the temperature of water supplied to the generator . Thus if the reeling load is given, the appropriate operating condition can be determined between the two opposing trends by simulation program. As an example of the simulation, the case of Jejudo province was studied. Under the conditions (such as weather data and prices of components, etc.) given en the sample calculation, the result shows that the optimum temperature of water supplied to the generator turned out to be $80.3^{\circ}C$, and still shows a large economical disadvantage in present stage compared to the case of conventional vapor compression cooling/heating combined heat pump system.

  • This study was carried out ill an attempt to investigate the properties and activities of sericin obtained from silk cocoon shells in silk reeling water through various instrumental analyses. In addition, the effects of the characteristics in sericin solubility on the reeling process and silk qualities were also studied on the basis of tile above conditions. The results obtained are as follows: I. The sericin properties and activities through various analytical instruments. 1. The water solubility of each amino acid such as serine, glycine. glutamic and aspartic acids against the pH modified water by using automatic amino acid analyzer, showed the lowest solubility at PH 5, but it increased according to drifting toward the alkalinity. 2. When the obtained sericin particles by water pH variation were observed with the electronic microscope, it was found for the sericin Particles to expand in the alkaline regions. 3. The IR spectrum results showed the differences among the pH modified sericin solutions at the range of 2,100cm-1 and 1.890cm-1 of wave number. 4. The existence of sericin with in silk fabrics made differences in the X-ray interference intencity, that is, the non-degummed fabrics had the interference peak at 2$\theta$=14$^{\circ}$, 17$^{\circ}$, 24$^{\circ}$, and the degummed ones had it at 2$\theta$=17$^{\circ}$, 18$^{\circ}$, 20$^{\circ}$, 23$^{\circ}$, 26$^{\circ}$. II. The results of sericin solubility for silk reeling process. 1. The sericin solubility and swelling had a tendency to increase up with high M-alkalinity and pH value of water. But in case of acidity. water hardness and concentration of ethylene glycol were high, the sericin solubility and swelling were decreased. 2. With the filature experiments, the best conditions of filature orator are summarized as fellows ; a. pH; 6.9${\pm}$0.2 d. acidity; below10ppm b. total hardness; 55:5ppm e. Fe ion; none c. M-alkalinity; 40${\pm}$10ppm

  • In the case of white cocoon, the fluorescence colors are classified as a yellowish fluorescence cocoon(Y.F.C.) and a violet fluorescence cocoon(V.F.C.) by exposing to ultra-violet ray. Accordingly, experiments were carried out to investigate the difference of sericin behaviors between Y.F.C. and V.F.C. by measuring the sericin solubility, surface tension and viscosity of the sericin solution. Also, the reelability of two different type of cocoons was investigated in the silk reeling process. The results were summarized as follows; 1. The sericin solubility of Y.F.C. shell is higher than that of V.F.C. shell with the dissolution temperature and time. It is shown that the sericin solubility curves of Y.F.c. and V.F.C. are similar in shape, but the difference of sericin solubility between Y.F.C. and V.F.C. is more significant at higher bath temperature. 2. The initial sericin dissolution curves of Y.F.C. and V.F.C. cocoon shell can be divided by four parts within the range of dissolving time from 5 minutes to 60 minutes. The initial dissolution velocity of Y.F.C. shell is faster than that of V.F.C. but the velocity difference is negligible after 30 minutes of dissolving time. 3. The gelation of V.F.C. sericin solution is faster than that of Y.F.C. at early stage(in the range of 15 minutes to 60 minutes). 4. In the silk reeling process, the reelability of Y.F.C. is better than that of V.F.C. with about 11%. This is mainly due to the higher sericin solubility in Y.F.C. followed by the fast dissolution velocity.

  • To determine the level of heterosis, higher cocoon shell weight multivoltine congenic lines (Con. L) and bivoltine syngenic lines (Syn. L) of silkworm were used for crosses. First filial generations $(F_1s)$ expressed heterobeltiotic genetic interaction at significant magnitude (p < 0.01) for single cocoon shell weight (SCSW). The other linked characters viz., single cocoon weight (SCW) and yield by weight per 10, 000 larvae were also significantly higher (p < 0.01) than the better parental lines. All the hybrids showed significant improvement for these aforesaid characters over standard heterosis (Standard check). The reeling parameters viz., filament length, raw silk, neatness, cohesionstrokes etc, also showed improvement among the hybrids than check in congenial environment. Overall results suggested that the cross between congenic and syngenic lines provide better heterosis with good quality silk than conventional hybrids and may be used for commercial exploitation.

  • Biotechnological researches in Central Asian Research Institute of Sericulture were developed since 1981 when laboratory of artificial diets for mulberry silkworm was created. The researches were directed not only to creation of accessible artificial diets (AD) for off-season mass rearing of economical beneficial insect and for industrialization of sericulture but also to obtaining of easy reproducible source of animal proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, enzymes, enzymes inhibitors and other metabolites - bioresource for manufacture of oriental medicine preparations. Space experiments with silkworms became possible with use of AD. These experiments used mulberry silkworm as high effective board test organism with outstanding developmental, reproductive and transgenic properties having important significance in future of cosmonautics. Introduction to practice of bioprotective and ecologically pure method of drying and sterilizing of green cocoons and by-products of silk manufacture allows to increase efficiency of cocoons reeling technology as well as to preserve nativity of biological active substances in mulberry silkworm pupae that is unachievable by traditional methods of raw material processing. New spheres of application of two important silk proteins - fibroin and sericin in medicine, cosmetics, for bio- and nanotechnology are opening with use of biotechnological approaches. At present the achievements and experience of R & D in these fields are used in creation of modern pests biocontrol agents. Schemes of efficient processing of cocoon raw material, by-products and wastes of sericulture and cocoon processing are devel- Institute of Physiology and Biophysics, Uzbek Academy of Sciences, I, Niyazov street, 700095, Tashkent, Uzbekistan. oped for obtaining of traditional and new consumer products.
