Automotive wheel bearings are a critical component of vehicles that support their weight and facilitate rotation. Life and stiffness are significant performance characteristics of wheel bearings. Designing wheel bearings involves finding optimal design variables that satisfy both performances. CO2 emission reduction and fuel efficiency regulations attribute to the recent increase in design requirements for lightweight and compact automotive parts while maintaining performance. However, achieving a design that maintains performance while reducing weight poses challenges, as performance and weight are generally inversely proportional. In this study, we perform design optimization of automotive wheel bearings considering life and stiffness. We develop a program that calculates the basic rated life and modified rated life based on international standards for evaluating the life of wheel bearings. We develop a regression equation using regression analysis to address the time-consuming stiffness analysis during repetitive analysis. We perform ANOVA and main effect analyses to understand the statistical characteristics of the developed regression equation. Furthermore, we verify its reliability by comparing the predicted and test results. We perform design optimization using the developed life prediction program, stiffness regression equation and weight regression equation. We select bearing specifications and geometry as design variables, weight as the cost function, and life and stiffness as constraints. Through design optimization, we investigate the influence of design variables on the cost function and constraints by comparing the initial and optimal design values.

In this study, practical design method of coupling beams is proposed. The member forces varies according to the location of the members and the members at 25%~40% of building height shows large member forces. The 100mm increase of wall thickness causes 3~4% variation of member forces and the 100MPa increase of concrete strength decrease approximately 3% of member forces. The required strength of coupling beams is twice the resistant strength and 80% reduction of coupling beam stiffness is necessary to fulfill the design criteria. The stiffness reduction of coupling beams is not necessary over the entire stories and the strength reduction range can be estimated considering design requirements.
Masonry infill walls are unavoidable parts of any building to create a separation between internal space and external environment. In general, there are some prevalent openings in the infill wall due to functional needs, architectural considerations or aesthetic concerns. In current design practice, the strength and stiffness contribution of infill walls is not considered. However, the presence of infill walls may decisively influence the seismic response of structures subjected to earthquake loads and cause a different behavior from that predicted for a bare frame. Furthermore, partial openings in the masonry infill wall are significant parameter affecting the seismic behavior of infilled frames thereby decreasing the lateral stiffness and strength. The possible effects of openings in the infill wall on seismic behavior of RC frames is analytically studied by means of pushover analysis of several bare, partially and fully infilled frames having different bay and story numbers. The stiffness loss due to partial opening is introduced by the stiffness reduction factors which are developed from finite element analysis of frames considering frame-infill interaction. Pushover curves of frames are plotted and the maximum base shear forces, the yield displacement, the yield base shear force coefficient, the displacement demand, interstory drift ratios and the distribution of story shear forces are determined. The comparison of parameters both in terms of seismic demand and capacity indicates that partial openings decisively influences the nonlinear behavior of RC frames and cause a different behavior from that predicted for a bare frame or fully infilled frame.

In recent years, 3D printing has received increasing attention due to its potential for direct fabrication beyond the traditional rapid prototyping. 3D printing has the advantage of being able to manufacture complicated shapes that were thought impossible to produce by traditional manufacturing processes. This advantage has driven applications of 3D printing to direct manufacturing of functional parts, such as lightweight structures and component integration. In this study, a porous shell structure is designed for the purpose of weight reduction and ventilation. Finite element (FE) analyses are performed to compare the effective stiffness of the porous structure with the conventional solid structure. Structural reinforcements are also considered in order to make up the stiffness reduction due to the porosity, and the relevant FE analyses are performed to investigate the effect of the reinforcement design on the bending stiffness. The optimized reinforced structure is then proposed through response surface analysis.

There are many factors which affect the acoustical properties of a micro-speaker. Among the factors, the shape of the diaphragm is considered in this study. As an investigating method, the finite element methods and measurement techniques applied to study the acoustical properties according to diaphragm shape. In order to vary the stiffness of the diaphragm, the some patterns of comb teeth, such as the angle and the number of comb teeth, are applied to diaphragm. We can confirm that the change of the stiffness by the changing diaphragm shape affects the vibration and sound properties of the speaker. As a result, the reduction of the angle of the comb teeth increases the diaphragm stiffness and shifts the resonance frequency to a higher frequency range. The number of the comb teeth is related to the stiffness of the edge part.

TWB(Tailor Welded Blanks) is one of the recent techniques to reduce the weight and cost of the body members. To apply the TWB technique, we must decide the position of the welding line and the thickness of the welded blanks. Although many researchers have tried to check the formability of welded blanks, there are not so many researches from the structural point of view. In this paper, the TWB technique is applied to combine the door inner panel and the hinge face panel into one piece. The finite element structural analysis of the door assembly leads to the final design of the tailor welded door inner panel, which shows the mass reduction of 1.08kg without the sacrifice of the structural stiffness. The structural stiffness analysis includes the frame stiffness analysis, the belt line stiffness analysis, the door sagging analysis and the vibration analysis.
The transition zone between railway embankment and structures, or different track types is known to be an area in which problems often arise and where extra care needs to be taken with maintenance. Differences in track stiffness have dynamic effects and these increase the force in the track and the extent of deformation. In this study, the criteria for the change ratio of track stiffness along transition area, and proper transition length are presented through train/track interaction analyses. Those are derived on the basis of permissible limitations of train and track performances such as rail stress, uplift force of fastener, reduction of dynamic wheel force, and acceleration of car body. A feasible method of evaluation of track stiffness which is necessary when a designer reviews whether the criteria are satisfied or not is also presented.

This paper describes the effect of the pad stiffness on the noise reduction of impact noise isolation pads of a floor. And also a new semi-experimental method for measuring the impact noise isolation capability of a pad is introduced. The impact noise isolation pads made of wire-mesh, urethane-chip and foam rubber are used for measuring the stiffness, the vibrational insulation performance and the impact noise isolation capability. The correlation between the stiffness and impact noise isolation capability of pads is theoretically reviewed, and confirmed from the experimental results. For measuring the impact noise isolation capability of only an isolation pad, a semi-experimental method proposed in this study is more effective than the reverberation room method.
Effective beam width models are commonly used to obtain the lateral stiffness of flat plate structures. In these models, an effective beam width is defined as the width when the flexural stiffness of the beam element equals the slab stiffness. In this present study, a method to obtain effective beam widths that considers the effects of connection geometry and slab cracking is analytically proposed. The rectangularity of the vertical member for the connection geometry and the combined effects of creep and shrinkage for the slab cracking are considered. The results from the proposed method are compared with experimental results from a test structure having nine slab-column connections.
Construction of concrete slab track is trending to increase gradually in national and international for reduction in track maintenance cost and secure of ride comfort. But elastic pad becomes superannuated due to repeated train operation. After all, it brings change of pad stiffness and it could directly act on track and bridge as load transmission and impact force. In this study, we carried out laboratory test changing pad stiffness after making a model of 15m bridge and laying concrete slab track. Also, we carried out static and dynamic behaviors test(stress, natural frequency, damping ratio, vibrational acceleration, deflection) of bridge and track and experimentally analyzed them by change of elastic pad stiffness on rail fastener.
