  • A convective circulation box was redesigned after analyzing reasons why adolescent elementary school students could not derive a convective circulation concept from the convection circulation box experiments. Even though students were in the formal operational period of Piaget, the adolescents felt difficult to understand a concept of the natural phenomena they have never seen before. Thus, we designed a method to help students increase their scientific understandings about the concept through developing a miniature convective circulation box. Findings indicated that an application of redesigned convective circulation box in the classroom experiment significantly increased the students' understanding about the convective circulations of land and sea breezes, and as well as their participation in the activities. In addition, the redesigned convective circulation box motivated students to develop their scientific thinking skills by allowing them to decide where to put visible incenses inside the box and to directly observe the smoke currents circulation formed accordingly. Redesigning and using a convective circulationbox as a miniature of natural phenomenon helps students avoid having misconceptions. The biggest merits of the box are that it is observable in all directions, it provides much clearer convective circulations comparing to the extant box, and it requires low production costs.

  • Fishing efficiency of a trawl vessel can be enhanced by increasing the swept area per unit time, which can be attained either by increasing the mouth size of the net, or by increasing the towing speed. To improve fishing and fuel efficiency of trawl vessels targeting fishes of greater mobility, in which the towing speed is more critical in determining fishing efficiency, we conducted a series of model tests to evaluate the performance of the newly-designed nozzle propeller before installing it in a trawl vessel to verify its towing speed and fuel efficiency in the sea. By conducting further model tests in the experimental basin, we redesigned the propeller of stern trawler to improve the resistance and propulsion performance. Through actual fishing operations, we evaluated the improvement in fuel and fishing efficiency by installing the new nozzle propeller. The trawling speed increased by 0.6kts at the same engine power (RPM), while the engine margin increased by more than 20%. The increased towing speed by installing the redesigned propeller is expected to enhance fishing performance through increasing the number of hauling- and casting operations per unit times, while shortening the towing duration. Analysis of the Catch-Per-Unit-Effort (CPUE) data indicated that the mean CPUE of trawl fishery increased from 3.04kg/m in year 2007 to 6.15kg/m in year 2008, confirming enhanced fishing efficiency by adopting the redesigned propeller.

  • Billions of tons of industrial waste are generated annually in industrialized countries. Managing and legally disposing of these wastes costs tens to hundreds of billions of dollars each year, and these costs have been increasing rapidly. The escalation is likely to continue as emission standards become even more stringent around the world. In the face of these rapidly rising costs and rapidly increasing performance standards, traditional end-of-pipe approaches to waste management have become less attractive. The most economical waste management alternatives in many cases have become recycling of the waste or the redesign of chemical processes and products so that wastes are prevented or put to productive use. These strategies of recycling or reducing waste at the source have collectively come to be known as pollution prevention. The engineering challenges associated with pollution prevention are substantial. This presentation will categorize the challenges in three levels. At the most macroscopic level, the flow of materials in our industrial economy, from natural resource extraction to consumer product disposal, can be redesigned. Currently, most of our raw materials are virgin natural resources that are used once, then discarded. Studies in what has come to be called industrial ecology examine the material efficiency of large-scale industrial systems and attempt to improve that efficiency. A second level of engineering challenges is found at the scale of individual industrial facilities, where chemical processes and products can be redesigned so that waste is reduced. Finally, on a molecular level, chemical synthesis pathways, combustion reaction pathways, and other material fabrication procedures can be redesigned to reduce emissions of pollution and unwanted by-products. All of these design activities, shown in Figure 1, have the potential to prevent pollution. All involve the tools of engineering, and in particular, chemical engineering.

  • The objective of this study is to design the optimal die profile that can prevent material fracture in the tube drawing process for automobile steering input shaft. First, the CDV(Critical Damage Value) of material is obtained by the compression test and FE-analysis. The occurrence of fracture is estimated by the FE-analysis considering the CDV. In order to achieve the objective of this study, optimization technique and FE-analysis are applied. FPS(Flexible Polyhedron Search) method, which is one of the non-gradient optimization techniques often used in engineering, is used to search optimal die profile. The drawing die profile is represented by Bezier-curve to generate all the possible die profile. Using FPS method and FE-analysis the optimal drawing die profile is determined. To verify tile effectiveness of the redesigned optimal die, the tube drawing experiment is performed. In the experimental result, it is possible to produce sound product without material fracture using the redesigned optimal die.

  • In this study, the performance of a DPRMs is evaluated and the measurement precision for the pile driving is presented. The DPRMs is a visual-measurement system for the pile rebound and the penetration movement using a high speed line-scan camera. The DPRMs generates the measurement deviation. It is caused by the strong impact for the pile driving. To reduce it, the vibration signal analysis about the pile driving is performed. As a result, it is confirmed that the tilting frequency of a camera-tripod structure corresponding to excitation frequency range of the ground is under 40Hz. Through the structure modification, the camera-tripod structure is redesigned to the model being free itself from the excitation frequency range of the ground. By the verification testing about the improvement effects, it is inspected that the tilting and measurement deviation of the redesigned DPRMs are reduced.

  • According to the environment change of market, supply chain network needs to be redesigned for efficient provision of product within the budget constraint. Also, it is desired that the customer satisfaction such as on time delivery should be considered as an important element at redesigning of supply chain network in addition to the cost reduction. In this paper redesign of supply chain network for its expansion is treated as a problem situation and a related mathematical model is suggested. Moreover, the numerical examples about the total weighted distance of the redesigned supply chain network are presented with various budget constraints by using genetic algorithm to help the managerial decision.

  • In this paper, a novel and efficient global intelligent digital redesign technique for a Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy system is addressed. The proposed method should be notably discriminated from the previous works in that in allows us to globally match the states of the closed-loop TS fuzzy system with the pre-designed continuous-time fuzzy-model-based controller and those with the digitally redesigned fuzzy-model-based controller, and further to guarantee the stabilizability by the redesigned controller in the sense of Lyapunov. Sufficient conditions for the global state-matching and the stability of the digitally controller system are formulated in terns of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The Duffing-like chaotic oscillator is simulated and demonstrated, to validate the effectiveness of the proposed digital redesign technique, which implies the safe applicability to the digital control system.

  • This study intends to reduce the weight of structure without changing the dynamic characteristics. At first, the Vibration analysis by the Substructure Synthesis Method and FFM using the ANSYS are performed for the engine speed converter to confirm the reliability of the analyzing tools. Weight minimization is performed by the Sensitivity Analysis and the Optimum Structural Modification. To decrease the converter weight ideally, the parts with low sensitivity are to be cut mainly, and the changing quantity of the natural frequency by the cut is to be recovered by the weight modification of the parts with high sensitivity. As the unique mathematical solution for the homogeneous problem(i.e. 0 object function problem) does not exist, the converter is redesigned with much thinner initial thickness. The goal of this study is to recover the dynamic characteristics of redesigned structure to those of the original one. To say in the other words, the modified structure has the same dynamic characteristics and the more lighter weight to compare with the original one.

  • Improving the productivity of steel cord is required due to the increase in demand for it, even though steel cord being used as a reinforcement of a tire has been produced at multi-pass wet wire drawing process over 1000m/min. To improve the productivity, if just increase drawing speed, it causes temperature rise, fracture arisen by embrittlement during drawing process. To increase drawing speed affecting productivity, the variation of wire temperature during multi-pass wet wire drawing process is investigated in this study. In result, the multi-pass wet wire drawing process is redesigned. The redesigned wet drawing process with 27 passes efficiently controls wire temperature during drawing process. It, therefore, enables drawing process to be possible at ultra high speed with 2000m/min. It becomes possible to improve the productivity of steel cord in this paper because the increase in drawing speed could be achieved.

  • This study proposed a method to redesign the search system by extracting the class, property, and code values of value domain from the key elements of the MDR system that conforms to the ISO/IEC 11179 standard. To implement this, an operating system conforming to the standard is required. Therefore, this study targeted the MDR system of the Korea Information and Communication Technology Association. As a result, it was confirmed that the redesigned MDR system can easily search and utilize specific metadata without understanding the conceptual domain, metadata element concept, metadata element, and value domain proposed in the standard.
