Occurrence of eye abnormality in cultured red seabream (Pagrus major) and induced hybrid, red seabream Pagrus major(♀) ${\times}$ black seabream Acanthopagrus schlegeli(♂)

  • Red scabream, Pagrus major , is a valuable aquaculture species in Korea , but spontaneous eye abnormality occurred in cultured individuals . The incidence of eye abnormality was 4% in the group of cultured red scebream. The abnormality was characterized by unilateral and bilateral exophthalmos, opacity and lens pathology. Lense prolapse was found in two cases. Lenses in diseased fishes was considerably small in diameter and eyes were deformed as a whole. In the group of induced hybrid red scabream Pagrus major (♀) x black seabrearn Acanthopagrus schlegeli (♂), the incidence of eye abnormality wa~ the same 4%, but only opacity was registered. Opacity was also found in two of sixteen examined Wild-caught red seabrcam. Histopathological changes of lenses in cultured red seabreem included vecuolated cytoplasm of lens fibers, necrosis of fibers in central part of lens, folding and increase in thickness of lens capsule, and epithelial proliferation beneath the anterior lens capsule. In affected eyes no parasites or gas bubbles were found.

Yield and Red Ginseng Quality of Super-aged Root of Panax ginseng (초고년근 고려인삼의 수량과 홍삼적성)

  • Seven year old ginseng was investigated for yield , the relationship between yield and percent missing plant and red ginseng quality. Yield was 2.06 kg/kan (3.3 m2) and percent missing plant was 27.1%. The highest yield plot showed 3.58 kg/kan and potential yield appeared to be 4.5 kg/kan. Yields of 1st, End and 3rd line showed significant negative linear correlation with percent missing plant. Potential yield without missing plant was in decreasing order of 1>2)3>5) 4 and negatively correlated with unit yield decrease per percent missing plant. Potential yield of 1st line was 6.56 kg/tan. Soft X-ray absorbtion characteristics was not different from that of 6 year old ginseng. Red ginseng grade and percent occurence of red ginseng quality factors were not different from those of 6 years old ginseng. The weight of red ginseng per root was much greater than that of 6 years ginseng. In view of yield and quality of fresh and red ginseng the production of red ginseng from 7 years old ginseng appears to be economically feasible.

Characteristics of Korean Single-harvested Pepper(Capsicum annuum, L.) Flakes and the Effects on the Quality of Various Dressings (한국산 일시 수확형 고추 후레이크의 특성 및 다양한 드레싱에의 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of single-harvested pepper flakes and investigated the effects of the addition of red and green pepper flakes on the quality of various dressings. Moisture contents of red and green pepper flakes were $14.57{\pm}0.13%\;and\;11.86{\pm}0.12%$, capsaicinoids contents on a dry-weight basis were $207.91{\pm}6.68\;mg/100\;g\;and\;172.32{\pm}5.94\;mg/100\;g$, and total free sugars were $21.63{\pm}1.81%\;and\;12.49{\pm}0.56%$, respectively. ASTA color of red pepper flakes was $150.93{\pm}4.56$. Viable cell numbers of red and green pepper flakes were $3.9X10^4\;CFU/g\;and\;5.2X10^5\;CFU/g$, respectively. The pH values in French dressing and Italian dressing, with added red and green pepper flakes, were slightly increased, but not in American Caesar dressing. Acidity and viscosity weren't statistically different in the 3 kinds of dressings by the addition of red and green pepper flakes. The color difference $({\Delta}E^*_{ab})$ for the storage periods was calculated in each dressing and that of American Caesar dressing with added red pepper flakes was extremely high. Viable cell number in each dressing was maintained at 2 log CFU/g during the storage periods. The sensory characteristics during the storage periods were assessed by members of a trained panel, and showed that the color and pungency of red and green flakes increased the overall preference in the Italian dressing and American Caesar dressing.

Luminescent Characteristics and Synthesis of Y3Al5O12:Eu3+ Red Phosphors (Y3Al5O12:Eu3+ 적색 형광체의 제조와 발광특성)

  • In this study, Y3Al5O12:Eu3+ red phosphors were synthesized at different temperatures using a solid state reaction method. The crystal structures, surface and optical properties of the Y3Al5O12:Eu3+ red phosphors were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), and photoluminescence (PL) analyses. From XRD results, the crystal structure of the Y3Al5O12:Eu3+ red phosphors was determined to be cubic. The maximum emission spectra were observed for the Y3Al5O12:Eu3+ red phosphor prepared by annealing for 4h at 1,700 ℃. The 565~590 nm photoluminescent spectra of the Y3Al5O12:Eu3+ red phosphors is associated with the 5D07F2 magnetic dipole transition of the Eu3+ ions. The intensity of the photoluminescent spectra in the red phosphors is more dominant for the magnetic dipole transition than the electric dipole transition with increasing annealing temperature. The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) coordinates of Y3Al5O12:Eu3+ red phosphors prepared by 1,700 ℃ annealing temperature are X = 0.5994, Y = 0.3647.

Red Fluorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Using Modified Pyran-containing DCJTB Derivatives

  • Two red fluorescent DCJTB derivatives (Red 1 and 2) based on modified pyrans were synthesized and their electroluminescent properties were investigated. Multilayered OLEDs were fabricated with the device structure of ITO/NPB (40 nm)/Red 1, 2 or DCJTB (0.5 or 1%): $Alq_3$ (20 nm)/$Alq_3$ (40 nm)/Liq (2 nm)/Al. All devices exhibited efficient red emissions. In particular, a device containing emitter Red 2 as a dopant in the emitting layer, the maximum luminance was $8737\;cd/m^2$ at 12.0 V, the luminous and power efficiencies were 2.31 cd/A and 1.25 lm/W at $20\;mA/cm^2$, respectively. The peak wavelength of the electroluminescence was 638 nm with the CIE (x,y) coordinates of (0.63, 0.36) at 7.0 V.

  • In this study, red mud with low recyclability was manufactured as liquid red mud, neutralized with sulfuric acid and nitric acid, and then added to cement paste to conduct research on physical and chemical properties. As a result, liquid red mud-added cement paste neutralized with sulfuric acid and nitric acid showed higher compressive strength after one day than cement paste with plain and non-neutralized liquid red mud. This indicates that nitric acid and sulfuric acid neutralization can increase initial strength.

Comparision of Combined Stress Tests for Predicting Field Emergence of Lotus corniculatus and Trifolium pratense (Birdsfoot Trefoil과 Red Clover의 포장출현율 예측을 위한 몇가지 Stress 검정법 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the test methods for predicting field emergence of Lotus corniculatus and Trifolium pratense. Four seed lots of two herbage legumes were controlled deteriorated, accelerated aged before germination test and conductivity of each seed lot was determined. Those germination percent and conductivity of seed lots were compared with actual field emergence rate. Field emergence rate could be estimated by the controlled deterioration test ($R^2$=0.687), by the accelerated aging test ($R^2$=0.260), and by the conductivity test ($R^2$=0.238). A multiple regression equation for predicting field emergence rate(equation omitted) was estimated as (equation omitted)=-198.16 + 2.3493X$_1$-1.5564X$_2$ + 1.9812X$_3$where X$_1$, percent germination of controlled deterioration test ; X$_2$, percent germination of accelerated aging test; and X$_3$, conductivity of solute leakage in the conductivity test. Conclusively, unless multiple tests are not available, the controlled deterioration test was comparatively high efficient for predicting field emergence rate, however, the combined measurements of those three tests can enhance the efficiency.

  • We present a new toed phosphor, $Gd_{2-x-y}Li_xEu_yO_3$ with superior luminescent Properties compared to the commercially available red phosphor $Y_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$. The phosphor, with a diameter of about $2\mu\textrm{m}$, consists of the psedospherical particles in a regular array. The photoluminescence measurements as a function of the laser power and the Eu mole fraction were performed at zoom temperature The luminescence intensity linearly increases as both the laser power and the Eu mole fraction Increase. As for the dependence on cathodoluminescence, the incorporation of Eu and Li ions into $Gd_2O_3$ lattice brings about an increase in luminescent efficiency. The highest emission intensity for the phosphor occurs at the applied voltage of 500 V, its value is larger than that of $Y_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ powder by 70%.

Investigation of a New Red-Emitting, Eu3+-Activated MgAl2O4 Phosphor

  • MgAl2O4:Eu3+ red-light emitting powder phosphor was prepared at temperature as low as 500 oC within a few minutes by using the combustion route. The prepared powder was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry. The luminescence of Eu3+-activated MgAl2O4 shows a strong red emission dominant peak around 611 nm, which can be attributed to the 5D0-7F2 transition of Eu3+ ions from the synthesized phosphor particles under excitation (394 nm). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements at the X-band showed that no signal could be attributed to Eu2+ ions in MgAl2O4.

The Effect of Addition of Gd, La into $YVO_{4}:Eu^{3+}$ Red Phosphor

  • The effect of doping Gd, La for Y into $YVO_{4}:Eu^{3+}$ red phosphor on its photoluminescence(PL) intensity has been investigated. $YVO_{4}:$Eu-based phosphors were prepared by solid-state reaction at temperature above $1200^{\circ}C$. Under UV excitation(254, 365 nm), it was measured that $YVO_{4}:Eu^{3+}$ was superior to a commercial red phosphor (Y,Gd)$BO_{3}:Eu^{3+}$ in terms of PL intensity and CIE color coordinates. When La, Gd were doped into $YVO_{4}:Eu^{3+}$, the change in the structure of the host material was observed. In result, when the ($Y{1_x}La_{x})VO_{4}:Eu^{3+}$ phosphors were excited by 365 nm excitation, its PL intensity was improved up to about 30 % for the case of x being $0.4{\sim}0.6$.
