  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the need for school uniform recycling and to review the school uniform recycling-related education. 231 female high school students were asked to answer regarding the wearing state of school uniform and their satisfaction level. 10 subjects in middle school technology/home economy were evaluated. As the result, the students wore 1~2 pieces of school uniform, which showed that it was hard to keep them clean by washing them often. The satisfaction level of school uniform was not high, The lowest item was the price. Therefore, to increase the satisfaction level of the school uniforms and also to increase the sanitary level of the school uniforms, it was advisable to purchase a recycled school uniform at cheaper prices to have an extra set. For a vitalization of the recycled school uniforms, the middle school technology/home economy subjects were reviewed. In the topic of "clothing acquisition plan and purchase", the themes of planned purchase, overconsumption of clothing and environmental pollution were discussed and included preferable behaviors for disposal. The topic of "clothing manufacturing and recycling" listed recycling the clothes that are not worn or exchanging them with neighbors as well as suggesting methods to illicit environment-friendly behaviors and carrying them out. However, some textbooks only briefly explained the methods of recycling and more detailed and practical methods need to be suggested in the curriculum. In addition, the contents regarding the environment in the clothing topic need to be supplemented more and more changes, such as related education plans or data development, are required. • According to the statistical data of the Ministry of Environment, 47million tons of construction waste were generated, and 96.7% of them was recycled in 2005. However, the recycled products seem to be remained under low quality. Because mixed demolition and construction waste, so called DC Waste, including concrete, brick, plaster, lumber, plastics building materials, paper and some dirt and stone, is very variable and difficult to estimate its exact composition, it is regarded as having little or no value to the construction industry. 'The Research group on recycling of construction waste' was started by the Housing & Urban Research Institute(KNHC), which is sponsored as a large scale national project by the Ministry of Construction and Transportation. This research group intends to establish recycling system through planing, processing, developing practical technology, and eventually contribute to save natural resource and to vitalize the industry. In this paper an overview of DC waste management and recycling technology is given in some detail. Particularly, "recycling law of construction waste" and recent research trends on recycling of construction waste are discussed.

  • In the present work, life cycle assessments (LCA) of various waste-plastic recycling methods (material recycling, refused derived fuel (RDF), recycling on furnace, and pyrolytic oil production) were carried out to investigate their impacts on the environment. Six types of impacts were considered. While the impact on global warming was found to be significant, the impact on others were negligible. The impact values on the global warming caused by the material recycling, RDF, and the recycling on furnace were negative, which implied that their impacts could be noticeably reduced when waste-plastic are used as an alternative to newly drawn plastics. The pyrolytic oil production, however, showed positive value, which may be due to the carbon dioxide produced during electric power generation. The pyrolytic oil production had the largest impact on the ozone layer destruction, which was due to ozone depleting substances produced from the process itself. These results can be used as a useful data for the enhancement of waste-plastic recycling.

  • This study was intended to investigated the effect of pulp type and intital calendering on the properties of recycled fiber. As the number of recycling is increased, at least by the fourth recycling , the freeness of the SW-BKP and HW-BKP increased. And then that decrease after the fifth recycling. Especially the freeness of CTMP increased more rapidly than any other pulp in first recycling. And there was no difference of freeness in all kind of pulp by initial calendering . The speed of dewatering in making sheet consistetly became slow by proceeding recycling on condition of all calendering. and the order of the speed of dewatering was as followed. CTMP>HW-BKP>SW-BKP. However in case of HW-BKP, which was low -yield pulp, the tendency of the speed of dewatering was similar to that of CTMP which was high-yield pulp and had high content lignin . There was no change of fiber length and no effect of calendering by recycling of HW-BKP and CTMP. Howeverfiber length of SW-BKP generally decreased, especially in calendering of high temperature and high pressure conditions. The WRV of SW-BKP diminished by proceeding recycling but that of HW-BKP and CTMP diminished in the first recycling and then there was no change of the WRV of HW-BKP and CTMP. The contents of fines of HW-BKP consistently decreased by the fourth recycling and then increased in the fifth recycling . On the other hand there was no tendency in the content of fines of SW-BKP and CTMP by the number of recycling.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to analyze the performance life of hot central plant recycling (HCPR) and hot in-place recycling (HIR) pavements applied to the National Highway for the past 20 years and compare it with conventional hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavement. METHODS : In order to analyze the performance life of recycling asphalt pavements, a comprehensive literature review was conducted to investigate the government law and official system for the use of recycling asphalt pavement in Korea and foreign countries. Next, the application information of using a hot central plant recycling and hot in-place recycling pavements in the national highway is collected from the database of pavement management system (PMS) and then their field condition is visually surveyed. Finally, the performance life of recycling asphalt pavements in the national highway is analyzed and compared with conventional hot-mix asphalt pavement. RESULTS :Institutions are encouraging the promotion of using recycled asphalt pavement through various legal systems in Korea as well as abroad. Based on analysis results for the average performance life of hot central plant recycling pavement applied to the national highway, the average performance life is estimated to be 10.2 years. However, the average performance life of in-place recycling pavement is estimated to be 6.5 years. However, it is expected to increase performance life after the HIR construction system is modified. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the limited data analysis of the performance life of recycled asphalt pavements, HCPR shows similar performance life to conventional asphalt pavement but HIR shows shorter performance life than conventional asphalt pavement. However, it is noted that all performance life data is very limited and it should be monitored and analyzed further.

  • The end-of-life vehicles (ELV) are important recycling sources, and there are several stages involved in the recycling such as dismantling, shredding, and treatment of shredder residues (ASR). The legal recycling rate should be at least 95% on and after 2015, while we need a proper system to monitor recycling of ELV components and to calculate the practical recycling rate. The paper suggests a monitoring system that calculates practical recycling rates of dismantled components by use of a database of standard recycling rate as well as a web-based monitoring, which is linked to the Eco Assurance system for electric & electronic equipment and vehicle (EcoAS). Also the system supports dismantling and monitoring process by incorporating a standard vehicular component database, which facilitates recording dismantled weight data but also monitoring of dismantled components.

  • Recently, plastic recycling has emerged as a social issue, and its importance is increasing. Therefore, this article reviewed the current status and the future directions of domestic plastic recycling. Plastic recycling is major economic and social problems not only in South Korea but also worldwide and is being treated as an important factor for protecting the environment and for sustainability in the next generation. In particular, China, which has been dealing with a large amount of plastic waste generated around the world, has banned importing plastic waste, therefore, other countries have faced the problem of recycling plastics in their countries. In South Korea, the landfill and incineration of the waste are becoming more difficult by the Framework Act on Resources Circulation, therefore, the recycling and reuse of plastics are a very important.
