  • The aim of this research is suggesting dry processed bottom ash as a new and economical source of lightweight aggregate for mortar and concrete. The dry process of bottom ash is an advance method of water-free and no chloride because only cooled down by double dry conveyer belt systems. Furthermore, because of relatively slow cooling down process helps burning up the remaining carbon in bottom ash. Using this dry process bottom ash, to evaluate the feasibility of using as a lightweight aggregate for mortar and concrete, two-phase of experiments were conducted: 1) improving shape of the bottom ash, and 2) controlling grade of the bottom ash. From the first phase of experiment, additional abrasing process was conducted for round shape bottom ash, hence improved workability and compressive strength was achieved while unit weight was increased comparatively. Based on the better shape of bottom ash, from the second phase, various grades were adopted on cement mortar, standard grade showed the most favorable results on fresh and hardened properties. It is considered that the results of this research contribute on widening sustainable method of using bottom ash based on the dry process and increasing value of bottom ash as a lightweight aggregate for concrete.

  • Climate anomalies in recent years, numerous natural disasters caused by landslides and a large amount of entrained sands and stones in Taiwan have created significant disasters and greater difficulties in subsequent reconstruction. How to respond to these problems efficaciously is an important issue. In this study, the sands and stones were doped with recycled materials (waste LCD glass sand, slag powder), and material was mixed for recycled ready-mixed soil. The study is based on security and economic principles, using flowability test to determine the water-binder ratio (W/B=2.4, 2.6, and 2.8), a fixed soil: sand ratio of 6:4 and a soil: sand: glass ratio of 6:2:2 as fine aggregate. Slag (at concentrations of 0%, 20%, and 40%) replaced the cement. The following tests were conducted: flowability, initial setting time, unit weight, drop-weight and compressive strength. The results show that the slump values are 220 -290 mm, the slump flow values are 460 -1030 mm, and the tube flow values are 240-590 mm, all conforming to the objectives of the design. The initial setting times are 945-1695 min. The unit weight deviations are 0.1-0.6%. The three groups of mixtures conform to the specification, being below 7.6 cm in the drop-weight test. In the compressive strength test, the water-binder ratios for 2.4 are optimal ($13.78-17.84kgf/cm^2$). The results show that Recycled ready-mixed soil materials (RRMSM) possesses excellent flowability. The other properties, applied to backfill engineering, can effectively save costs and are conducive to environmental protection.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine whether cementitious powder separated from waste concrete can be used as an alternative raw material to limestone and reduce the usage of natural resource (limestone) and $CO_2$ emission based on recycling cementitious powder from waste concrete. Experiments actually analyzed the chemical composition of cementitious powder and performed hyperthermia analysis, measurement of free CaO and XRD analysis to measure the degree of recovery of hydration in the model of cementitious powder manufactured based on chemical composition. These were performed in each cementitious powder model at different calcination temperatures such as $900^{\circ}C$, $1200^{\circ}C$, $1300^{\circ}C$, $1400^{\circ}C$ and $1450^{\circ}C$. Through the experiments, it was found that the recovery of hydration was at a level which can be used as the alternative raw material for limestone, but the replacement ratio was directly affected by the degree of mixing of fine aggregate in less than $150{\mu}m$, which cannot be separated from cementitious powder. It was shown that there was no difference in the production of compounds involved in hydration at calcination temperatures of $1200^{\circ}C$ or higher. Therefore, to pursue the replacement of limestone and reduction of greenhouse gas by recycling cementitious powder, the development of technology to efficiently separate aggregate fine powder is required.

  • In case of crushing rock to produce materials for lean concrete subbase layer in concrete pavement, natural sand is used for the gradation adjustment of aggregates, and the percentage of natural sand used is 30%~40% of the weight ratio of aggregate mix. The supply of natural sand that is used in lean concrete as a fine aggregate is getting harder due to the current of exhaustion of source, and the cost for the purchase of natural sand is included in the cost of roadway construction. This study, therefore, was conducted in order to resolve the exhaustion of materials and economize in construction expenditure by the application of screenings, which is by-product of crushing rock in quarry, as an alternative to natural sand. As a result of a comparative analysis on the application of screenings and natural sand with typical types of rock that is produced in domestic, which was conducted in the first year, It is found out that the use of screenings as a fine aggregate showed better unconfined compression strength. Verification of actual application of screenings was conducted in the second year, after test construction and follow-up investigation. The compressive strength, compaction density, settlement of screenings applied case was higher than that of natural sand. Thus, it is expected that application of screenings to construction in field will contribute to the cost saving, material recycling and the protection of environment.

  • In this study, performance evaluation and rheological characteristics were analyzed for recycling the fine powder of nuclear power plant dismantled waste concrete as a solidifying agent for radioactive waste disposal. The radioactive concrete fine powder was used to prepare a simulated sample, and the test specimen was prepared using Di-water, CoCl2, and 1 mol CsCl aqueous solution as mixing water. Regardless of the aggregate mixing ratio and the type of mixing water, it satisfies the performance standard of 3.45 MPa for compressive strength at 28 days of age. All specimens satisfied the criteria for submersion strength, and the thermal cycle compressive strength satisfies the criteria for all specimens except Plain-50. As a result of evaluating the rheological properties of the solidifying agent, it was found that the increase in the aggregate mixing rate decreased the yield stress and plastic viscosity. The leaching index for cobalt and cesium of all specimens was 6 or higher, which satisfies the standard. In order to secure the stable performance of the solidifying agent, it is considered effective to use 40 % or less of the aggregate component in the solidifying agent.

  • Based on the Fire Service Act of mandatory provision, new buildings are strictly forced to use fire protection materials. Flame resistant EPS is one of those materials. Unlike conventional EPS that can be fused to make EPS ingot and be recycled for various purposes, flame resistant EPS waste cannot be recycled due to the presence of protective coating that is applied to increase the fire protection properties of EPS. A suitable alternative that can process large amount of flame resistant EPS wastes needs to be developed, and one of the possible alternative is to use them as construction materials. In this research, experiments were designed to observe whether the flame resistant EPS wastes can be utilized as partial replacements of fine aggregates in cement mortar. The replacement ratio of waste EPS was varied, and its effect on compressive strength and absorption capacity was investigated. According to the experimental results, both compressive strength and absorption capacity met the Korean Standard specification for cement bricks and blocks, indicating that flame resistant EPS wastes can be used for construction purposes.

  • With the vision of 'a low carbon green develop' various industrial by-products were used as replacement of cement, in order to reduce $CO_2$ emissions from the manufacturing process of cement. Blast furnace slag is one of the industrial by-products. Due to the similar chemical compositions to ordinary Portland cement, blast furnace slag have been widely used in concrete with minimum side effects. Hence, in recent years, alkali activated slag-based composites are extensively studied by many researchers. However, the alkali activator can cause a number of problems in practice. Therefore, in this study, an alternative way of activating the slag was investigated. To activate the slag without using an alkali activator, calcium sulfate dihydrate was chosen and mixed with natural recycled fine aggregate. Fundamental properties of the slag-based mortar were tested to evaluate the effect of calcium sulfate dihydrate.

  • The objective of this study is to modify the mixture proportions of concrete that were developed for section enlargement strengthening elements using a specially designed binder composed of 5% ultra-rapid hardening cement, 10% polymer, and 85% ordinary portland cement in order to assign the self-compaction property to such concrete. The self-compaction abilities of concrete were estimated by the performance criteria specified in JSCE and EFNARC provions. Test results showed that the increase in the unit binder content at the consistent water-to-bider ratio led to increase in viscosity of fresh concrete but did not exhibit the decrease in the fluidity due to a greater viscosity. The mixture proportioning of self-compaction section enlargement concrete could be considered at the following conditions: unit binder contents of $430kg/m^3{\sim}470kg/m^3$ and fine aggregate-to-total aggregate ratios of 40%~46% at the water-to-binder ratio of 38%.

  • In this research the processing method of Desulfurized Plaster is changed to cyclotomy, 0.3mm sieve analysis and 500℃ heat exposure, and by changing the mix rate of the binding agent to 0~20%, it was applied to mortar that used natural aggregate and blast furnace slag for testing. The test results showed that the sieve analysis and high heat exposure of the flow and air volume increased according to the increase of mixing rate of FGD while the cyclotomy decreased. The setting time accelerated as the mixing rate of FGD increased, and the compression strength increased to its maximum when the mixing rate of FGD was right around 10%, and especially showed a high trend with cyclotomy and sieve analysis.
