The objective of the present study is to investigate the characteristics of the dividing flow in the laminar flow region. Using glycerine water solution(wt43%) for Newtonian fluid and the polymer of viscoelastic fluid(500wppm) for non-Newtonian fluid, this research investigates the flow state of the dividing tube in steady laminar flow region of the two dimensional dividing tube by measuring the effect of Reynolds number, dividing angle, and the flow rate ratio on the loss coefficient. In T- and Y-type tubes, the loss coefficients of the Newtonian fluid decreases in constant rate when the Reynolds number is below 100. The effect of the flow rate ratio on the loss coefficients is negligible. But when the Reynolds number is over 100, the loss coefficient with various flow rate ratios approach an asymptotic value. The loss coefficient of the non-Newtonian fluid for different the Reynolds number shows the similar tendency of the Newtonian fluid. And when the Reynolds number is over 300, the loss coefficient is approximately 1.03 regardless of flow rate ratio or the dividing angle. The aspect ratio does hardly influence the reattachment length and the loss coefficient of both Newtonian and non Newtonian fluid. The loss coefficient decreases as the Reynolds number increases. The loss coefficient of Newtonian fluid is larger than that of non-Newtonian fluid.

Effects of a length-to-diameter ratio, L/D, on the three-dimensional flow and aerodynamic loss within an injection hole, which is normally oriented to the mainflow, have been investigated by using a straight five-hole probe. The length-to-diameter ratio of the injection hole is varied to be 0.5 and 2.0 for blowing ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0. Regardless of the blowing ratio, flows within the hole and at the jet exit are strongly affected by the length-to-diameter ratio. In the case of L/D=0.5, the inside flow is considerably influenced by the mainflow, and the exit flow variation is found to be the greatest. The aerodynamic loss in this case is usually attributed to jet -mainflow interactions. In the case of L/D=2.0, the flow separation and reattachment in the inlet region are completely separated from the complicated exit flow, and the aerodynamic-loss production is mainly due to the inlet flow separation.
In this study, the reattachment processes of small and medium size of spot of Mytilus coruscus and M. edulis were observed. The small spats (Shell length, SH, $3{\sim}7mm$) of hard shelled mussel, M. coruscus showed 100% reattachment rate within 7 minutes after the detachment of byssus thread and 100% survival rate. While large spats (SH 25 mm) showed 85% reattachment rate within 5 hours and 100% survival rate for 24 hours. The reattachment rate of M. edulis (SH 30 mm) was higher than that of M. coruscus (SH, 28 mm). The thread consisted of three identifiable structures; adhesive disc, adhesive thread and adhesive root. The adhesive disk and adhesive thread of M. coruscus were larger and thicker than those of M. edulis, whereas the thickness of adhesive root was the other way round. Further studies are required to identify the relationship between the structure of byssus thread and attachment ability. This study suggests that the sizes of spats could be an important factor in determining the timing of removing and reattaching mussel seedling for aquaculture or releasing to the sea.

Algebraic Reynolds Stree (ARS) model is applied in order to analyze the turbulent flow of wall-attaching offset jet and to evaluate the predictability of model. The applied numerical schemes are the upwind scheme and the skew-upwind scheme. The numerical results show a good prediction in the first order calculations(i.e., reattachment length, mean velocity, pressure), however, slight deviations in the second order(i.e., kinetic energy and turbulence intensity). Comparing with the previous results using the k-$\varepsilon$ model, the ARS model predicts better than the standard k-$\varepsilon$ model, however, slightly worse than the k-$\varepsilon$ model including the streamline curvature modification. Additionallay this study can reconfirm that the skew-upwind scheme has approximately 25% improved predictability than the upwind scheme.

The flow characteristics of two-dimensional turbulent offset jet which is discharged parallel to a solid wall has been studied experimentally and numerically. In the experiment, 3-hole pitot tube and 2 channel constant temperature hot-wire anemometer are used to measure local mean velocity, turbulence intensity and Reynolds stress while scannivalve is used to measure the wall pressure distribution. It is confirmed experimentally that local mean velocity is closely related to wall pressure distribution. It is also verified that for large Reynolds numbers and fixed step height there exists a similarity in the distribution of wall pressure coefficient. The maximum values of turbulence intensity occur in the top and bottom mixing layers and the magnitude of Reynolds stress becomes large in the lower mixing layer than in the top mixing layer due to the effect of streamline curvature and entrainment. In the numerical analysis, standard k-.epsilon. model based on eddy viscosity model and Leschziner and Rodi model based on algebraic stress model are adopted. The numerical analyses predict shorter reattachment lengths than the experiment, and this difference is judged to be due mainly to the problem of turbulence model constants and numerical algorithm. This also causes the inconsistency between the two results for other turbulence quantities in the recirculation region and impingement region, which constitutes a subject of a continued future study.

The present study investigates heat/mass transfer for flow through perforated plates for application to combustor wall and turbine blade film cooling. The experiments are conducted for hole length to diameter ratios of 0.68 to 1.5, for hole pitch-to-diameter ratios of 1.5 and 3.0, for gap distance between two parallel perforated plates of 1 to 3 hole diameters, and for Reynolds numbers of 60 to 13, 700. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients near and inside the cooling holes are obtained using a naphthalene sublimation technique. Detailed knowledge of the local transfer coefficients is essential to analyze thermal stress in turbine components. The results indicate that the heat/mass transfer coefficients inside the hole surface vary significantly due to flow separation and reattachment. The transfer coefficient near the reattachment point is about four and half times that for a fully developed circular tube flow. The heat/mass transfer coefficient on the leeward surface has the same order as that on the windward surface because of a strong recirculation flow between neighboring jets from the array of holes. For flow through two perforated plate layers, the transfer coefficients on the target surface (windward surface of the second wall) affected by the gap spacing are approximately three to four times higher than that with a single layer.
The turbulent shear flaw around a surface-mounted vertical wall was investigated using the two-frame PIV(CACTUS 3.1) system. From this study, it is revealed that at least 500 instantaneous velocity field data are required for ensemble average to get reliable turbulence statistics, but only 200 field data are sufficient for the time-averaged mean velocity information The flow has an unsteady recirculation region post vertical wall with bottom gap, followed by a slow relaxation to the fiat-plate boundary layer flow. The time-averaged reattachment length estimated from the streamline distribution is about x/H=3H. The large eddy structure in the separated shear layer seems to have signification influence on the development of the separated shear layer and the reattachment process.
Effect of boundary layer thickness on the flow characteristics around a rectangular prism has been investigated by using a PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. Three different boundary layers(thick, medium and thin)were generated in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel at Pusan National University. The thick boundary layer having 670mm thickness was generated by using spires and roughness elements. The medium thickness of boundary layer$(\delta=270mm)$ was the natural turbulent boundary layer at the test section with fully long developing length(18m). The thin boundary layer with 36.5mm thickness was generated by on a smooth panel elevated 70cm from the wind tunnel floor. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and the height of the model was $7.9{\times}10^3$. The mean velocity vector fields and turbulent kinetic energy distribution were measured and compared. The effect of boundary layer thickness is clearly observed not only in the length of separation bubble but also in the reattachment points. The thinner boundary layer thickness, the higher turbulent kinetic energy peak around the model roof. It is strongly recommended that the height ratio between model and approaching boundary layer thickness should be a major parameter.
In this study, a passive control using a boat-tail device is conducted for a three-dimensional car model in ground proximity. We consider various boat-tails and investigate the mechanism of drag reduction by them. By varying the length and slant angle of boat-tail, we obtain drag reductions up to 40%. From the oil-surface flow visualization and hot-wire measurement, the drag reduction by the boat-tail is characterized by the shear-layer instability and reattachment on the boat-tail, forming a small separation bubble at the upstream part of boat-tail surface, resulting in the delay of main separation and drag reduction. At high slant angles, the flow fully separates and drag is nearly same as that of no control.

The current study analyzes Langmuir slip boundary condition theoretically and it is tested in practical numerical analysis for separation-associated flow. Slip phenomenon at the channel wall is properly implemented by various numerical slip boundary conditions including Langmuir slip model. Compressible backward-facing step flow is compared to other analysis results with the purpose of diatomic gas Langmuir slip model validation. The numerical solutions of pressure and velocity distributions where separation occurs are in good agreement with other numerical results. Numerical analysis is conducted for Reynolds number from 10 to 60 for a prediction of separation at T-shaped micro manifold. Reattachment length of flows shows nonlinear distribution at the wall of side branch. The Langmuir slip model predicts fairly the physics in terms of slip effect and separation.
