  • The paper considers the algorithms of balanced realization from SISO transfer functions. Some methods which have been proposed to find a balanced realization from the companion form realization, are investigated. Then a new method is proposed which finds a balanced realization from the discrete Schwarz form realization. The process of computing the elements of Schwarz matrix from the transfer function is equivalent to the Schur-Cohn stability test procedure. Comparison of the proposed method with the previous works is also discussed.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for realizing transfer functions containing variable parameter, by the state-space method. By using this method, variable transfer functions (VTF) can be often realized with a minimal dimension. In case that a minimal realization can not be obtained, the realization dimension can be fairly reduced.

  • This paper presents the realization method of 90$^{\circ}$ constant phase shifter in the VHF band, constructed by the entirely differens idea from the conventional method of the realization of constant phase shifter in the audio frequency range. The construction of 90$^{\circ}$ constant phase shifter is. simple and can be easily realized by using the distributed constant element, transmission line, and the lumped constant elements, R,C,L.

  • This paper is on weighted model reduction using structurally balanced truncation. For a given weighted(single or double-sided) transfer function, a state space realization with the linear fractional transformation form is obtained. Then we prove that two block diagonal LMI(linear matrix inequality) solutions always exist, and it is possible to get a reduced order model with guaranteed stability and a priori error bound. Finally, two examples are used to show the validity of proposed weighted reduction method, and the method is compared with other existing methods.

  • An efficient method for identification of MIMO state space model has been developed by combining partial least squares (PLS) regression, balanced realization, and balanced truncation. In the developed method, a MIMO system is decomposed into multiple MISO systems each of which is represented by a high-order ARX model and the parameters of the ARX models are estimated by PLS. Then, MISO state space models for respective MISO ARX transfer function are found through realization and combined to a MIMO state space model. Finally, a minimal balanced MIMO state space model is obtained through balanced realization and truncation. The proposed method was applied to the design of model predictive control for temperature control of a high pressure $CO_2$ solubility measurement system.

  • In this paper we discuss the Socratic method from the aspects of subject education and examine the meaning of the method in mathematics education that is the most suitable subject for the realization of the Socratic method. In addition, as a realization of the Socratic method, we conducted a teaching-learning experiment of complex natural exponential function with a 2nd year college student. The results of the experiment are analyzed with the intention of improving instruction of the complex analysis that is one of the college mathematics courses.

  • A full automatic interpretation of awake electroencephalogram (EEG) had been developed by the authors and presented at the past KACCs in series. The automatic EEG interpretation consists of four main parts: quantitative EEG interpretation, EEG report making, preprocessing of EEG data and adaptable EEG interpretation. The automatic EEG interpretation reveals essentially the same findings as the electroencephalographer's (EEG's), and then would be applicable in clinical use as an assistant tool for EEGer. The method had been developed through collaboration works between the engineering field (Saga University) and the medical field (Kyoto University). This work can be understood as an artificial realization of human expert skill. The procedure for the artificial realization was summarized in a methodology for artificial realization of human skill which will be applicable in other fields of systems control.

  • In this paper, a recursive digital filter realization for an ionospheric channel model is proposed. This realization is in the form of a cascade of identical second-order all-pass filters, and is determined by only three parameters; two coefficients of an all-pass section, and the number of sections. The values of these parameters are optimized by a nonlinear optimization algorithm called the "downhill simplex method", so that the resulting time delay function closely approximates that of the ionospheric channel model. Comparing with the nonrecursive digital filter realization, it can be shown that the proposed recursive-digital-filter-realization is advantageous in points of view for the numbers of filter coefficients and the realization.

  • Several model order reduction methods for large RLC circuits have been developed in the last few years. Krylop subspace based methods are extremely effective for generating the low order models of large system but there is no optimal theory for the resulting models. Alternatively, methods based truncated balanced realization have an optimality property but are too computationally expensive to use on complicated problems such as large RLC circuits. In this paper, we present a method for improving time domain response of reduced order RLC circuits. The method used here is based on combing Krylop subspace based method and truncated balanced realization method plus residualization. The metho...
