High Level Approach Programming in Real Time Distributed Network System

  • Real-time(RT) object-oriented(OO) distributed computing is a form of RT distributed computing realized with a distributed computer system structured in the form of an object network. Several approached proposed in recent years for extending the conventional object structuring scheme to suit RT applications, are briefly reviewed. Then the approach named the TMO(Time-triggered Message-triggered Object)structuring scheme was formulated with the goal of instigating a quantum productivity jump in the design of distributed time triggered simulation. The TMO scheme is intended to facilitate the pursuit of a new paradigm in designing distributed time triggered simulation which is to realize real-time computing with a common and general design style that does not alienate the main-stream computing industry and yet to allow system engineers to confidently produce certifiable distributed time tiggered simulation for safety-critical applications. The TMO structuring scheme is a syntactically simple but semantically powerful extension of the conventional object structuring approached and as such, its support tools can be based on various well-established OO programming languages such as C++ and on ubiquitous commercial RT operating system kernels. The Scheme enables a great reduction of the designers efforts in guaranteeing timely service capabilities of application systems.

  • As various types of embedded devices are widely used, a technology that supports reuse of applications on multiple platforms is needed in order for time-to-market development of the applications. The interface middleware is one of such technology and it hides platform dependency from application programmers. Existing interface middleware such as the MT project, Xenomai and Legacy2linux have limitation in that the APIs provided by each of these middleware are fixed to a specific operating system, and the middleware does not provide dynamic expansion of its API set. In this paper, we propose a middleware which hides operating system dependencies and enables porting of applications on various operating systems. In addition, the middleware has scalable structure so that it is suitable for resource-limited embedded systems. The overhead of the middleware, i.e., the time delay occurred by the middleware is between $0.3{\mu}sec\;and\;5{\mu}sec$ in most cases. We believe that the amount of overhead is reasonable and does not hurt the performance of applications.

  • RTiK-Linux is a method to provide real-time performance to Linux, it is controlled by directly accessing hardware registers to implement time tick interrupts. It implemented on x86 Intel and ARM based Exynoss 5422, but it had a disadvantage that it could not be ported to both fragmented other platform environments. In this paper, We change structure of time tick interrupt for improve po rtability so that it can operate on other platforms. We apply high-resolution timers that are independent of hardware, and modify operating structure to task and event to satisfy time determinism. It was confirmed that the improved RTiK-Linux works well in x86 and various ARM AP environments.

  • MSC is being developed to be installed on KOMPSAT(Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-II and to provide high resolution multi-spectral. MSC consists of three main subsystems. One is EOS(Electro-Optics Subsystem), another is PMU(Payload Management Unit) and the other is PDTS(Payload Data Transmission Subsystem). There is an SBC(Single Board Computer) in the PMU to control all MSC subsystems. SBC incorporates Intel 80486 as a main processor and VxWorks as a real-time operating system. SBC software consists of four main tasks and several modules to deal with all control information for imaging and all the state of health telemetrv data, and to perform interface with another MSC units.   • In military applications, many radar systems are simultaneously operated at a close range. In particular, the frequency allocation must be executed for operating the homogeneous radar systems at the same time. As many radar systems are simultaneously operated with overlapping frequency bands, interference between systems inevitably occurs. Because interference can degrade radar performance, suppression of interference is a critical issue in radar systems. In this letter, we analyze the interference between two FMCW radars. In addition, time synchronization method between radars using mutual interference is proposed. Experiments are carried out to validate the proposed method. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is suitable for real radar systems.

  • The importance and cost of avionics system in the integration of an aircraft is continuously increasing. And we can expect enlarged software portion in the system integration for the more intelligent, reliable, and automated avionics system. Both military and commercial avionics community have moved toward commercial-off-the-shelf(COTS) equipment and open systems architecture not only to increase affordability but also to reduce acquisition cost, shorten development time and risk. The same concept is applied in developing avionics test system used for the avionics system integration test. In this paper, we present important topics in the development of avionics system including real-time operating system, interconnect data bus, software development methodology, software development process, and system integration test.

  • There has been need for safety monitoring systems for the social infrastructures. These infrastructures are subject to degradation over time, reduced functionality, and loss of functionality as a result of factors such as a wide variety of installation environments, natural disasters, and nearby work. Therefore, it is necessary to perform appropriate inspections, repairs, and renovations to ensure safe and efficient maintenance and operation. This paper introduces the example of the development of the safety monitoring system for operating railway tunnel. Tunnel profile measuring system using laser beam, crack gauges, accelerometer and a pluviometer were implemented to monitor the safety of a deteriorated tunnel. The measured data were transferred through wireless network and analyzed in real time. The safety criteria for tunnel stabilities and train operations are also discussed.

  • This paper proposes a distributed model predictive formation control algorithm for a group of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) with guaranteeing collision avoidance between UGVs. Generally, the model predictive control based formation control has a disadvantage in that it takes a long time to compute control inputs when considering collision avoidance between UGVs. In this paper, in order to overcome this problem, the formation control algorithm is implemented in a distributed manner so that it could be individually controlled. Also, a collision-avoidance method considering real-time is proposed. The proposed formation control algorithm is implemented based on robot operating system (ROS), open source-based middleware. Through the various simulation tests, it is confirmed that the formation control of five UGVs is successfully performed while avoiding collisions between UGVs.

  • Since the welding process is complex and highly nonlinear, it is very difficult to accurately model the process for real-time control. In this paper, a discrete-time transfer function matrix model for gas metal arc welding process is proposed. Although this linearized model is valid only around the operating point of interest, the adaptation mechanism employed in the control system render this model useful over a wide operating range. A multivariable one-step-ahead adaptive control strategy combined with a recursive least-squares method for on-line parameter estimation is implemented in order to achieve the desired weld bead geometries. Command following and disturbance rejection properties of the adaptive control system for both SISO and MIMO cases are investigated by simulation and experiment.

  • Wireless wearable sensor networks have emerged as a promising technique for human motion tracking due to the flexibility and scalability. In such system several wireless sensor nodes being attached to human limb construct a wearable sensor network, where each sensor node including MEMS sensors (such as 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis magnetometer and 3-axis gyroscope) monitors the limb orientation and transmits these information to the base station for reconstruction via low-power wireless communication technique. Due to the energy constraint, the high fidelity requirement for real time rendering of human motion and tiny operating system embedded in each sensor node adds more challenges for the system implementation. In this paper, we discuss such challenges and experiences in detail during the implementation of such system with wireless wearable sensor network which includes COTS wireless sensor nodes (Imote 2) and uses TinyOS 1.x in each sensor node. Since our system uses the COTS sensor nodes and popular tiny operating system, it might be helpful for further exploration in such field.
