This parer presents the analysis of hot gas flow in puffer-type circuit breakers using FVFLIC method. For the analysis of arc-flow interaction, the flow field is analyzed from the equations of conservation for mass, momentum and energy with the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium state. The arc is represented as the energy source term composed of ohmic heating and radiation term in the energy conservation equation. Ohmic heating is computed by the electric field analysis only within the conducting plasma region. An approximate radiation transport model is employed for the evaluation of emission and absorption of the radiation. The analysis method was applied to the real circuit breaker model and simulation results such as pressure rise and arc voltage were compared with the experimental ones.

The definition of the speed of sound is reexamined since it is crucial in the numerical analysis of compressible real gas flows. The thermodynamic speed of sound (TSS), $a_{th}$, and the characteristic speed of sound (CSS), $a_{ch}$, are derived using generalized equation of state (EOS). It is found that the real gas EOS, for which pressure is not linearly dependent on density and temperature, results in slightly different TSS and CSS. in this formalism, Roe's approximate Riemann solver was derived again with corrections for real gases. The results show a little difference when the speeds of sound are applied to the Roe's scheme and Advection Upstream Splitting Method (AUSM) scheme, but a numerical instability is observed for a special case using AUSM scheme. It is considered reasonable to use of CSS for the mathematical consistency of the numerical schemes. The approach is applicable to multi-dimensional problems consistently.

Droplet vaporization at various ambient pressures is studied numerically by formulating one dimensional evaporation model in the mixture of hydrocarbon fuel and air. The ambient pressure ranged from atmospheric conditions to the supercritical conditions. The modified Soave-Redlich-Kwong state equation is used to account for the real gas effects in the high pressure condition. Non-ideal thermodynamic and transport properties at near critical and supercritical conditions are considered. Some computational results are compared with Sato's experimental data for the validation of calculations. The comparison between predictions and experiments showed quite a good agreement. The droplet lifetime increases with increasing pressure at temperature lower than the critical temperature, however, it decreases with increasing pressure at temperature higher than the critical temperature. The solubility of nitrogen can not be neglected in the high pressure and it becomes higher as the temperature and the pressure go up.

This paper presents the modeling approach that can predict transient behavior of rotary compressor. Mass and energy conservation laws are applied to the control volume, real gas state equation is used to obtain thermodynamic properties of refrigerant. The valve equation is solved to analyze discharge process also. Dynamic analysis of vane and roller is carried out to gain friction work. From the above modeling, the performance of rotary compressor with radial clearance and friction loss is investigated numerically. The performance of each refrigerant is estimated, respectively by applying R12, R134a, and R290/ R600a mixture.

In this study, the validity of reducing the number of gas turbine stages designed for a nitrogen Brayton cycle coupled to a sodium-cooled fast reactor was assessed. The turbine performance was evaluated through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations under different off-design conditions controlled by a reduced flow rate and reduced rotational speed. Two different multistage gas turbines designed to extract almost the same specific work were selected: two- and three-stage turbines (mid-span stage loading coefficient: 1.23 and 1.0, respectively). Real gas properties were considered in the CFD simulation in accordance with the Peng-Robinson's equation of state. According to the CFD results, the off-design performance of the two-stage turbine is comparable to that of the three-stage turbine. Moreover, compared to the three-stage turbine, the two-stage turbine generates less entropy across the shock wave. The results indicate that under both design and off-design conditions, increasing the stage loading coefficient for a fewer number of turbine stages is effective in terms of performance and size. Furthermore, the Ellipse law can be used to assess off-design performance and increasing exponent of the expansion ratio term better predicts the off-design performance with a few stages (two or three).

A computer code based on a node equation method has been developed for the analysis of pipe network. Both data structure and object-oriented programming technique are used for pipe and node modelling, in which simplification process is applied to complicated and large pipe network. The semi-direct solver, ILU-CGS, improves greatly both the accuracy and the rate of convergence. The computational result of high-pressure pipe network of city gas in Taegu shows the good agreement with the real data.
This study was carried out for the purpose of determination of maintenance period and investigation of weak point due to freeze when the gas heater of KOGAS valve station Is not operated in winter season. 3-dimensional non-linear numerical simulation was conducted in order to predict the time and location which bath water in heater reaches to ice point. FLUENT V 5.0, commercial code, is used for thermal fluid flow analysis. We thought this was problem of heat conduction solving the energy equation and modeled gas heater by using the real geometry and scale for performing the 3-dimensional simulation. It was analyzed complex heat transfer phenomena considering convection due to air on surface, conduction in insulation material, natural convection of liquid in heater and heat loss through the pipe.
A numerical study of high pressure and temperature droplet vaporization and combustion is conducted by formulating one dimensional evaporation model and single-step chemical reaction in the mixture of hydrocarbon fuel and air. The ambient pressure ranged from atmospheric conditions to the supercritical conditions. In order to account for the real gas effect on fluid p-v-T properties in high pressure conditions, the modified Soave-Redlich-Kwong state equation is used in the evaluation of thermophysical properties. Some computational results are compared with Sato's experimental data for the validation of calculations in case of vaporization. The comparison between predictions and experiments showed quite a good agreement. Droplet surface temperature increased with increasing pressure. Ignition time increased with increasing initial droplet diameter. Temporal or spatial distribution of mass fraction, mass diffusivity, Lewis number, thermal conductivity, and specific heat were presented.
Hydrocarbon dew point(HCDP), a property which is the most generally used for describing natural gas condensation, is a very important parameter of natural gas quality specifications. HCDP is strongly influenced by the concentration of the heavier hydrocarbon components, especially $C_6+$, so, along with compliance with gas quality specifications, build up of procedures for obtaining accurate HCDP is essential for gas transmission company, because hydrocarbon condensation present may cause serious operational and safety problems. This study has been carried out in an attempt to measure HCDP accurately by the automatic hydrocarbon dew point meter under the actual field conditions. Measured HCDP also has been compared with calculated HCDP using the composition determined by gas chromatograph and industry accepted equation of state at multiple pressures, along with the cricondentherm. The test results are 1) the automatic hydrocarbon dew point meter was able to measure stable HCDP continuously 2) the automatic hydrocarbon dew point meter has been performed reference measurement by pure propane with a known dew point from literature, and 3) A meaningful differences was observed when comparing the automatic hydrocarbon dew point meter and gas chromatograph results for synthetic standard gas mixtures and real gas mixtures.

The estimation method of combustion efficiency has been introduced by using closed bomb test(CBT). The Noble-Abel equation of state was applied to consider the real gas effects to take account of high operation pressure about a couple of 100 atm. of CBT. The heat loss through the CBT wall was considered. The volume change of grain was calculated by applying form functions, which estimated combustion efficiency of 8 different gain shapes. The combustion estimation method proposed in this study was fairly validated by the comparision with the pressure-time history data of the CBT experiments. The effects of both grain shape and propellant loading density were analyzed.
