A computer code, BERD (Bayesian Estimation of Reliability Data), has been developed and tested in order to update the data for the reliability analysis of safety related systems in a specific nuclear power plant. The code has been used to derive the plant-specific data for reliability analysis of the auxiliary feedwater system of a pressurized water reactor. The prior information for components selected was taken from the U.S. Reactor Safety Study, WASH-1400, and the operating experiences from published licensee event reports. The results show that the updated data are well fitted to log-normal distribution curves and the error factors are reduced significantly.
$M^2LFR-1000$ is a medium-power modular lead-cooled fast reactor, developed by University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), aiming at achieving a reactor design fulfilling the Gen IV nuclear system requirements and meanwhile emphasizing the optimum safety and economics. In order to evaluate the safety performance of $M^2LFR-1000$ reactor core, three typical transients are selected from initiating events, which are unprotected transient overpower (UTOP), unprotected loss of offsite power (ULOHS+ULOF) and increase of feedwater flowrate with primary pumps trip (IFW+PLOF). These three transients presented and discussed in this paper are performed with the code Analysis of THermal-hydraulics of LEaks and Transients (ATHLET), which is developed by Gesellschaft $f{\ddot{u}}r$ Anlagen-und Reaktorsicherheit gGmbH (GRS). The results indicate that the $M^2LFR$ is safe enough under these three transients due to the good inherent safety features of the reactor, without human intervention, the reactor will reach a new steady state under UTOP condition.
A metal-fueled pool-type liquid metal fast reactor (LMFR) provides large margins to sodium boiling and fuel damage under accident conditions. The favorable passive safety results are obtained by both a reactivity feedback mechanism in the core and a passive decay heat removal system. Among the various reactivity feedbacks, the ones by a thermal expansion of a radial dimension of the core and by the control rod drivelines are strongly dependent on the flow conditions in the core and the hot pool, respectively. The effects of multidimensional thermal hydraulic characteristics on these reactivity feedbacks are investigated by the system-wide safety analysis code SSC-K with advanced thermal hydraulics models. Particularly a detailed three dimensional thermal hydraulics reactor core model is integrated into SSC-K for use in a whole system analysis of the passive safety aspects of LMR designs. The model provides fuel and cladding temperatures for every fuel pin in a reactor and coolant temperatures for every coolant sub-channel in the reactor.
CSPACE (Core meltdown, Safety and Performance Analysis CodE for nuclear power plants) for a simulation of severe accident progression in a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) is developed by coupling of verified system thermal hydraulic code of SPACE (Safety and Performance Analysis CodE for nuclear power plants) and core damage progression code of COMPASS (Core Meltdown Progression Accident Simulation Software). SPACE is responsible for the description of fluid state in nuclear system nodes, while COMPASS is responsible for the prediction of thermal and mechanical responses of core fuels and reactor vessel heat structures. New heat transfer models to each phase of the fluid, flow blockage, corium behavior in the lower head are added to COMPASS. Then, an interface module for the data transfer between two codes was developed to enable coupling. An implicit coupling scheme of wall heat transfer was applied to prevent fluid temperature oscillation. To validate the performance of newly developed code CSPACE, we analyzed typical severe accident scenarios for OPR1000 (Optimized Power Reactor 1000), which were initiated from large break loss of coolant accident, small break loss of coolant accident, and station black out accident. The results including thermal hydraulic behavior of RCS, core damage progression, hydrogen generation, corium behavior in the lower head, reactor vessel failure were reasonable and consistent. We demonstrate that CSPACE provides a good platform for the prediction of severe accident progression by detailed review of analysis results and a qualitative comparison with the results of previous MELCOR analysis.
A hybrid safety injection tank (H-SIT) can enhance the capability of an advanced power reactor plus (APR+) during a station black out (SBO) that is accompanied by a severe accident. It may a useful alternative to an electric motor. The operations strategy of the H-SIT has to be investigated to achieve maximum utilization of its function. In this study, the master logic diagram (i.e., an analysis for identifying the differences between an H-SIT and a safety injection pump) and an accident case classification were used to determine the parameters of the H-SIT operation. The conditions that require the use of an H-SIT were determined using a decision-making process. The proper timing for using an H-SIT was also analyzed by using the Multi-dimensional Analysis of Reactor Safety (MARS) 1.3 code (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Daejeon, South Korea). The operation strategy analysis indicates that a H-SIT can mitigate five types of failure: (1) failure of the safety injection pump, (2) failure of the passive auxiliary feedwater system, (3) failure of the depressurization system, (4) failure of the shutdown cooling pump (SCP), and (5) failure of the recirculation system. The results of the MARS code demonstrate that the time allowed for recovery can be extended when using an H-SIT, compared with the same situation in which an H-SIT is not used. Based on the results, the use of an H-SIT is recommended, especially after the pilot-operated safety relief valve (POSRV) is opened.
The randomness and incipient nature of certain faults in reactor systems warrant a robust and dynamic detection mechanism. Existing models and methods for fault diagnosis using different mathematical/statistical inferences lack incipient and novel faults detection capability. To this end, we propose a fault diagnosis method that utilizes the flexibility of data-driven Support Vector Machine (SVM) for component-level fault diagnosis. The technique integrates separately-built, separately-trained, specialized SVM modules capable of component-level fault diagnosis into a coherent intelligent system, with each SVM module monitoring sub-units of the reactor coolant system. To evaluate the model, marginal faults selected from the failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) are simulated in the steam generator and pressure boundary of the Chinese CNP300 PWR (Qinshan I NPP) reactor coolant system, using a best-estimate thermal-hydraulic code, RELAP5/SCDAP Mod4.0. Multiclass SVM model is trained with component level parameters that represent the steady state and selected faults in the components. For optimization purposes, we considered and compared the performances of different multiclass models in MATLAB, using different coding matrices, as well as different kernel functions on the representative data derived from the simulation of Qinshan I NPP. An optimum predictive model - the Error Correcting Output Code (ECOC) with TenaryComplete coding matrix - was obtained from experiments, and utilized to diagnose the incipient faults. Some of the important diagnostic results and heuristic model evaluation methods are presented in this paper.
Multi-dimensional analysis of reactor safety-KINS standard (MARS-KS) is a thermal-hydraulic code to simulate multiple design basis accidents in reactors. The code has been essential to assess nuclear safety, but has mainly focused on light water reactors, which are in the majority in South Korea. Few previous studies considered pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR) applications. To verify the code applicability for PHWRs, it is necessary to develop MARS-KS input decks under various transient conditions. This study proposes an input model to simulate small-break loss of coolant accidents for PHWRs. The input model includes major equipment and experimental conditions for test B9802. Calculation results for selected variables during steady-state closely follow test data within ±4%. We adopted the Henry-Fauske model to simulate break flow, with coefficients having similar trends to integrated break mass and trip time for the power supply. Transient calculation results for major thermal-hydraulic factors showed good agreement with experimental data, but further study is required to analyze heat transfer and void condensation inside steam generator u-tubes.
To accurately analyze the accidents in nuclear reactors, a thermohydraulic-neutronic coupling calculation is required to solve fluid dynamics and nuclear reactor kinetics equations in fine cells simultaneously and evaluate the local effects of neutronic and thermohydraulic parameters on each other. In the present study, a 3D thermohydraulic-neutronic coupling model is developed, validated and then applied for Isfahan MNSR (Miniature Neutron Source reactor) safety analysis. The proposed model is developed using FLUENT software and user defined functions (UDF) are applied to simulate the neutronic behavior of MNSR. The validation of the proposed model is first evaluated using 1mk reactivity insertion experiment into Isfahan MNSR core. Then, the developed coupling code is applied for a design basis accident (DBA) scenario analysis with the insertion of maximum allowed cold core reactivity of 4 mk. The results show that the proposed model is able to predict the behavior of the reactor core under normal and accident conditions with a good accuracy.
To support the safe operation of the Miniature Neutron Source Reactor (MNSR), a thermo-hydraulic transient model using the RELAP5/Mod3.2 code was simulated. The model was verified by comparing the results with the measured and the previously calculated data. The comparisons consisted of comparing the MNSR parameters under normal constant power operation and reactivity insertion transients. Reactivity Insertion Accident (RIA) for three different initial reactivity values of 3.6, 6.0, and 6.53 mk have been simulated. The calculated peaks of the reactor power, fuel, clad and coolant temperatures in hot channel were calculated in this model. The reactor power peaks were: 103 kW at 240 s, 174 kW at 160 s and 195 kW at 140 s, respectively. The fuel temperature reached its maximum value of 116 ℃ at 240 s, 124 ℃ at 160 s and 126 ℃ at 140 s respectively. These calculation results ensured the high inherently safety features of the MNSR under all phases of the RIAs.

To determine the optimum pressurizer water level during normal operation for Kori unit 1, performance and safety analysis are peformed. The methodology is developed by evaluating "decrease in secondary heat removal" events such as Loss of Normal Feedwater accident. To demonstrate optimum pressurizer level setpoint, RETRAN-03 code is used for performance analysis. Analysis results of RETRAN following reactor trip are compared with the actual plant data to justify RETRAN code modelling, The results of performance and safety analyses show that the newly established level setpoints not only improve the performance of pressurizer during transient including reactor trip but also meet the design bases of the pressurizer volume and pressure. pressure.
