Ethanol production using glycerol as a carbon source was performed by Enterobacter aerogenes immobilized on calcium alginate beads. To improve the ethanol production, the optimal conditions such as loading amount of immobilized cells and glycerol concentration were investigated. The optimal loading amount of immobilized cells and glycerol concentration were 10 mL of calcium alginate bead and 10 g/L, respectively. Consequently, glycerol consumption rate, ethanol concentration and yield were 0.32 g/$L{\cdot}h$, 3.38 g/L and 0.43 g/g on the batch production, respectively. Continuous production of ethanol was successfully achieved using two types of immobilized cell reactors (continuous stirred tank reactor and packed bed reactor) from 10 g/L of glycerol. In the continuous stirred tank reactor, glycerol consumption, ethanol concentration, specific productivity and yield were 9.8 g, 4.67 g/L, 1.17 g/$L{\cdot}h$, 0.48 g/g, respectively. The concentration of produced ethanol was 38-44% higher comparison to batch fermentation, and continuous stirred tank reactor showed better performance than packed bed reactor.
Two types of cyanide sensor system were constructed for monitoring river water simply. One is membrane type flow system composed of S. cerevisiae coated membrane and oxygen electrode, the other is reactor type flow system composed of S. cevevisiae immobilized reactor and two oxygen electrode. S. cerevisiae and oxygen electrode were used for detecting cyanide compounds. These sensors are based on the inhibition of cyanides on the respiration activity of S. cerevisiae. Membrane type sensor system could detect cyanides ranging 0.10∼1.00ppm, and the respiration activity of S. cerevisiae continued for a day. Reactor type sensor system composed of immobilized chitopearl HP-5020 with S. cerevisiae could detect cyanides in the range of 0.10∼1.00ppm, and maintained 90% respiration activity for sixteen days. It was found that the optimum reactor size exist for the reactor type biosensor when respirating activity inhibition is used for detection of cyanides.
In this study, two types of reactors were operated to examine the properties of methanol uptake under the high-rate denitrification process. In a sequencing batch reactor, the denitrifying activity was enriched up to 0.80 g-N/g-VSS-day for 72 days. Then, the enriched denitrifying sludge was transferred to a completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR). At the final phase on Day 46-50, the nitrogen removal efficiency was around 100% and the total nitrogen removal rate reached 0.097±0.003 kg-N/㎥-day. During the continuous process, the sludge settling index (SVI30) was stabilized as 118.3 mL/g with the biomass concentration of 1,607 mg/L. The continuous denitrifying process was accelerated by using a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with a total nitrogen removal rate of 0.403±0.029 kg-N/㎥-day with a high biomass concentration of 8,433 mg-VSS/L. Because the reactor was open to ambient air with the dissolved oxygen range of 0.2-0.5 mg-O2/L, an increased organic carbon requirement of 5.58±0.70 COD/NO3--N was shown for the SBR in comparison to the value of 4.13±0.94 for the test of the same biomass in a completely anaerobic batch reactor. The molecular analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene showed that Methyloversatilis discipulorum and Hyphomicrobium zavarzinii were the responsible denitrifiers with the sole organic carbon source of methanol.

Emitted CO2 is an attractive material for microbial electrochemical CO2 reduction. Microbial electrochemical CO2 reduction (i.e., microbial electrosynthesis, MES) using biocatalysts has advantages compared to conventional CO2 reduction using electrocatalysts. However, MES has several challenges, including electrode performance, biocatalysts, and reactor optimization. In this study, an MES system was investigated for optimizing reactor types, counter electrode materials, and CO2-converting microorganisms to achieve effective CO2 upcycling. In autotrophic cultivation (supplementation of CO2 and H2), CO2 consumption of Rhodobacter sphaeroides was observed to be four times higher than that with heterotrophic cultivation (supplementation of succinic acid). The bacterial growth in an MES reactor with a single-chambered shape was two times higher than that with a double chamber (H-type MES reactor). Moreover, a single-chambered MES reactor equipped with titanium mesh as the counter electrode (anode) showed markedly increased current density in the graphite felt as a working electrode (cathode) compared to that with a graphite felt counter electrode (anode). These results demonstrate that the optimized conditions of a single chamber and titanium mesh for the counter electrode have a positive effect on microbial electrochemical CO2 reduction.
A study on the progressive inelastic deformation behavior of the 316 L stainless steel cylindrical structure with plate-to-shell junction under moving temperature front was carried out by structural test and analysis. The structural test intends to simulate the thermal ratcheting behavior occurring at the reactor baffle of the liquid metal reactor as free surface of hot sodium pool moves up and down under plant transients. The thermal ratchet load that heats the specimen up to 550$^{\circ}C$ was applied repeatedly and residual deformation was measured. The thermal ratcheting test was carried out with two types of cylindrical structures, one with plate to-shell junction and the other without the junction to investigate the effects of the geometric discontinuities on the global ratcheting deformation. The temperature distributions of the test specimens were measured and were used for the ratcheting analysis. The ratchet deformations were analyzed with the constitutive equation of the non-linear combined hardening model. The analysis results were in good agreement with those of the structural tests.
Principles and historical background of high pressure liquid jet (HPLJ) technology is presented in the paper. This technology can be applied, among others, for production of nano particles. This target can be achieved in various type of disintegration systems developed and designed on the base of this technology. The paper describes principles of two examples of such systems: HPLJ-reactor, called also a linear comminuting system, HPLJ- centrifugal comminuting system, which prototypes have been manufactured. A linear mill, being high energy liquid jet reactor, has been developed and tested for micronization of various types of materials. The results achieved so far, and presented in the paper, show its potential for further improvement toward nano-size particle production. Flexibility of adjustment of the reactors and the mechanism of the process allows for the creation of particles with unprecedented rheology. The reactor can be especially suitable to micronize, mix and densify materials with a wide range of mechanical properties for various industrial needs. Presented prototypes of comminution systems generate interesting potentials toward production of nano particles. Their performance, based on up today research, confirms expected high efficiency of materials disintegration, which opens a new challenge for industrial applications. The paper points out benefits and area of possible applications of presented technology.

Limited information is available on the degradation of volatile hydrocarbons determined via the use of plate-inserted photocatalytic reactors. This has led to the evaluation of surface areas of cylindrical continuous-flow photocatalytic reactors for the degradation of three selected aromatic hydrocarbons. Three types of reactors were prepared: a double cylinder-type, a single cylindrical-type without plates and a single cylindrical-type with inserted glass tubes. According to diffuse reflectance, FTIR and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, the surface characteristics of a coated photocatalyst were very similar to those of raw $TiO_2$, thereby suggesting that the coated photocatalyst exhibited the same photocatalytic activity as the raw $TiO_2$. The photocatalytic degradation efficiencies were significantly or slightly higher for the single cylinder-type reactor than for the double cylinder-type reactor which had a greater catalytic surface area. However, for all target compounds, the degradation efficiencies increased gradually when the number of plates was increased. Accordingly, it was suggested that the surface area being enhanced for the plate-inserted reactor would elevate the photocatalytic degradation efficiency effectively. In addition, this study confirmed that both initial concentrations of target compounds and flow rates were important parameters for the photocatalytic removal mechanism of these plate-inserted photocatalytic reactors.

An in-pile performance test of HANA claddings was conducted at up to 67 GWD/MTU in the Halden research reactor in Norway over a 6.5 year period. Four types of HANA claddings (HANA-3, HANA-4, HANA-5, and HANA-6) and a reference Zircaloy-4 cladding were used for the in-pile test. The evaluation parameters of the HANA claddings were the corrosion behavior, dimensional changes, hydrogen uptake, and tensile strength after the claddings were tested under the simulated operation conditions of a Korean commercial reactor. The oxide thickness ranged from 15 to 37 mm at a high flux region in the test rods, and all HANA claddings showed corrosion resistance superior to the Zircaloy-4 cladding. The creep-down rate of all HANA claddings was lower than that of the Zircaloy-4 cladding. In addition, the hydrogen content of the HANA claddings ranged from 54 to 96 wppm at the high heat flux region of the test rods, whereas the hydrogen content of the Zircaloy-4 cladding was 119 wppm. The tensile strength of the HANA and Zircaloy-4 claddings was similarly increased when compared to the un-irradiated claddings owing to the radiation-induced hardening.
SMMIAR (Submerged Moving Media Intermittent Aeration Reactor) Process is a very efficient system which remove ammonia to nitrogen gas in one reactor. In this study, we determined the diversity of ammonia oxidizing bacteria and denitrifying bacteria using specific PCR amplification and the clone library construction. An ammonia monooxygenase gene(amoA) was analyzed to investigate the diversity of nitrifiers. Most of amoA gene fragments (27/29, 93%) were same types and they are very similar (>99%) to the sequences of Nitrosomonas europaea and other clones isolated from anoxic ammonia oxidizing reactors. ANAMMOX related bacteria have not determined by specific PCR amplification. A nitrite reductase gene(nirK) was analyzed to investigate the diversity of denitrifying bacteria. About half (9/20, 45%) of denitrifiers were clustered with Rhodobacter and most of others were clustered with Mesorhizobium (6/20, 30%) and Rhizobium (3/20, 15%). All of these nirK gene clones were clustered in alpha-Proteobacteria and this result is coincide with other system which also operate nitrification and denitrification in one reactor. The molecular monitoring of the population of nitrifiers and denitrifiers would be helpful for the system stabilization and scale-up.
Modern society has been experiencing by population growth and urbanization that bring, a change of eating habits which has occurred a various types of waste in a large amount. Even though these wastes are required an immediate treatment with difficulties unsanitary handling and existing waste treatment method are by incineration, fermentation, drying and etc. however a bad smell occurs after the treatment that need's a lot of energy in processing organic wastes with high moisture contents and wasteful and inefficient problem. The strength assessment of the organic waste agitating vessel is required in terms of safety due to the differences of loading on the shaft that was treated by agitating the mixture of food waste. The damage of agitating axis is depended on steam pressure, temperature condition and the force moment that exerted by the food waste. Thus the strength assessment and stability evaluation are very important, especially to handle a hard waste. In this study the rotation capacity of agitation is about 5 tons considering general structural rolled steel pressure vessel strength and steam pressure. The purpose is to estimate the safety and strength evaluation for a agitator axis and impellers according to the rotating angle of the axis under the condition of the 3.2 ton capacity reactor.
