  • We have developed a linearly polarized high-power Yb-doped fiber laser in the master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) scheme for efficient spectral beam combining. We modulated the phase of the seed laser by pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS), with the bit length optimized to suppress stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), and subsequently amplified seed power in a 3-stage amplifier system. We have constructed by coiling the polarization-maintaining (PM) Yb-doped fiber, with core and cladding diameters of 20 ㎛ and 400 ㎛ respectively, to a diameter of 9-12 cm for suppression of the mode instability (MI). Finally, we obtained an output power of 1.004 kW with a slope efficiency of 83.7% in the main amplification stage. The beam quality factor M2 and the polarization extinction ratio (PER) were measured to be 1.12 and 21.5 dB respectively. Furthermore, the peak-intensity difference between the Rayleigh signal and SBS signal was observed to be 2.36 dB in the backward spectra, indicating that SBS is successfully suppressed. In addition, it can be expected that the MI does not occur because not only there is no decrease in slope efficiency, but also the beam quality for each amplified output is maintained.

  • It has been required to find flaws smaller than $100{\mu}m$ by fracture mechanic consideration. We prepared the infiltrated and sintered SiC structural ceramic specimens including artificial flaws, Fe, pore, WC, Si particles of size ranging from $36{\mu}m$ to $200{\mu}m$. We performed C-scan for the specimen using a high frequency and broad-band ultrasonic transducer to employ polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) and a broad-band electric scanning system. The flaws in the ceramic specimens were detected in the high frequency detection field up to 100MHz. But, the flaws were not detected in lower frequency detection field up to 60MHz. The ratio of the detected smallest flaw size to the wavelength calculated at the center frequency, 80MHz, was about 0.25 in Rayleigh scattering region.

  • We have studied tile detection techniques, which can determine the location and the weight of an intruder into infrastructure, by using fiber-optic ROTDR (Rayleigh optical time domain reflectometry) sensor and fiber-optic BOTDA (Brillouin Optical time domain analysis) sensor, which can use an optical fiber longer than that of ROTDR sensor Fiber-optic sensing plates of ROTDR sensor, which arc buried in sand, were prepared to respond the intruder effects. The signal of ROTDR was analyzed to confirm the detection performance. The constructed ROTDR could be used up to 10km at the pulse width of 30ns. The location error was less than 2 m and the weight could be detected as 4 grades, such as 20kgf, 40kgf, 60kgf and 80kgf. Also, fiber optic BOTDA sensor was developed to be able to detect intrusion effect through an optical fiber of tells of kilometers longer than ROTDR sensor. fiber-optic BOTDA sensor was constructed with 1 laser diode and 2 electro-optic modulators. The intrusion detection experiment was peformed by the strain inducing set-up installed on an optical table to simulate all intrusion effect. In the result of this experiment, the intrusion effort was well detected as the distance resolution of 3m through the fiber length of about 4.81km during 1.5 seconds.

  • Landsat TM band ratio algorithms were made by in-water optical measurement data of each sampling points for water quality monitoring of coastal area using Landsat TM satellite data. The algorithm was derived from in-water optical reflectance data which was measuring by the PRR(profiling reflectance radiometer). And, in-water optical reflectance data were applied to Landsat TM bands. Relationship between in-water optical reflectance and pigments proposed by the ratio of TM band 1 and band 2 showed to as follows; $Y=3.8352{\times}(R(band\;1)/R(band\;2))^{-2.1978}$ ($R^2$=0.7069) and, relationship of the ratio of TM band 1 and band 3 as follows; $Y=23.288{\times}(R(band\;1)/R(band\;3))^{-1.5243}$ ($R^2$=0.8062). Calculated the upwelling radiance of water surface and radiance of TM showed the ratio of atmospheric effect. In the coastal area Rayleigh and Mie scattering of atmosphere is to make over 80% of normalized radiance of Landsat TM. In order to apply in-water algorithm obtained by PRR, we had to calculate the atmospheric effects at sampling site. And, the quantitative analysis of in-water components using Landsat TM data need the calibration of in-water algorithm and effective method of atmospheric correction.

  • Scattering by Sea surface roughness occurs due to sea level roughness, communication performance deteriorates by causing frequency spread in communication signals and time variation in communication channels. In order to compare the difference in time variation of underwater acoustic communication channel according to the surface roughness, an experiment was performed in a tank owned by Hanyang University Ocean Acoustics Lab. Artificial surface roughness was created in the tank and communication signals with three bandwidths were used (8 kHz, 16 kHz, 32 kHz). The measured surface roughness was converted into a Rayleigh parameter and used as a roughness parameter, and statistical analysis was performed on the time-varying channel characteristics of the surface path using Doppler spread and correlation time. For the Doppler spread of the surface path, the Weighted Root Mean Square Doppler spread (wfσν) that corrected the effect of the carrier frequency and bandwidth of the communication signal was used. Using the correlation time of the surface path and the energy ratio of the direct path and the surface path, the correlation of total channels was simulated and compared with the measured correlation time of total channels. In this study, we propose a method for efficient communication signal design in an arbitrary marine environment by using the time-varying characteristics of the sea surface path according to the sea surface roughness.

  • In this paper, performance evaluation of mobile access layer for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) MultiCarrier(MC)/CDMA 16 QAM system is considered to mitigate multiple access interference and enhance system channel capacity in Rayleigh wireless fading channel. Traditionally, multi-path is viewed as an undesirable feature of wireless communications. Therefore, diversity and adaptive array schemes are proposed to mitigate its effects. Recently, to increase the spectrum efficiency and the link reliability, MIMO schemes is devised to exploit multi-path in a scattering wireless channel. In particular, the channel capacity of MIMO-MC/CDMA 16 QAM system is evaluated according to Eb/No, Mc, p. From the results, in order to improve the channel capacity, the signals at various elements must be uncorrelated. And if the paths are correlated due to inappropriate spacing or mutual coupling effects, the channel capacity of MIMO-MC/CDMA 16 QAM system becomes substantially smaller.

  • In this study, extinction limit extension of unsteady $(CH_{4}+N_{2})$/air diffusion flames was investigated experimentally. A spatially locked flame in an opposing jet burner was perturbed by linear velocity variation, and time-dependent flame luminosity, transient maximum flame temperature and OH radical were measured over time with the high speed camera, Rayleigh scattering method and OH laser-induced fluorescence, respectively. Unsteady flames survive at strain rates that are much higher than the extinction limit of steady flames, and unsteady extinction limits extend as the slope of the strain rate increases or the initial strain rate decreases. We verified the validity of the equivalent strain rate concept by comparing the course of unsteady extinction process and steady extinction process, and it was found that the equivalent strain rate concept represents well the unsteady effect of a convective-diffusive zone. To investigate the reason of the unsteady extinction limit extension, we subtracted the time lag of the convective-diffusive zone by using the equivalent strain concept. Then the modified unsteady extinction limits become smaller than the original unsteady extinction limits, however, the modified unsteady extinction limits are still larger than the steady extinction limits. These results suggest that there exist the unsteady behavior of a diffusive-reactive zone near the extinction limit due to the chemical non-equilibrium states associated with unsteady flames.

  • In this study, aerosol size distributions were retrieved from aerosol optical depth measured over a range of 10 wavelengths from 250 to 1100 nm. The 10 wavelengths were selected where there is no absorption of atmospheric gases. To obtain the solar spectrum, a home-made solar tracking system was developed and calibrated. Using this solar tracking system, total optical depths (TODs) were extracted for the 10 wavelengths using the Langley plot method, and aerosol optical depths (AODs) were obtained after removing the effects of gas absorption and Rayleigh scattering from the TODs. The algorithm for retrieving aerosol size distributions was suggested by assuming a bimodal aerosol size distribution. Aerosol size distributions were retrieved and compared under various arbitrary atmospheric conditions. Finally, we found that our solar tracking spectrometer is useful for retrieving the aerosol size distribution, even though we have little information about the aerosol's refractive index.

  • The information of surface reflectance ($R_{sfc}$) is important for the heat balance and the environmental/climate monitoring. The $R_{sfc}$ sensitivity to error-induced variables for the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) retrieval from geostationary-orbit satellite observations at 300-500 nm was investigated, utilizing polar-orbit satellite data of the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Ozone Mapping Instrument (OMI), and the radiative transfer model (RTM) experiment. The variables in this study can be cloud, Rayleigh-scattering, aerosol, ozone and surface type. The cloud detection in high-resolution MODIS pixels ($1km{\times}1km$) was compared with that in GEMS-scale pixels ($8km{\times}7km$). The GEMS detection was consistent (~79%) with the MODIS result. However, the detection probability in partially-cloudy (${\leq}40%$) GEMS pixels decreased due to other effects (i.e., aerosol and surface type). The Rayleigh-scattering effect in RGB images was noticeable over ocean, based on the RTM calculation. The reflectance at top of atmosphere ($R_{toa}$) increased with aerosol amounts in case of $R_{sfc}$<0.2, but decreased in $R_{sfc}{\geq}0.2$. The $R_{sfc}$ errors due to the aerosol increased with wavelength in the UV, but were constant or slightly decreased in the visible. The ozone absorption was most sensitive at 328 nm in the UV region (328-354 nm). The $R_{sfc}$ error was +0.1 because of negative total ozone anomaly (-100 DU) under the condition of $R_{sfc}=0.15$. This study can be useful to estimate $R_{sfc}$ uncertainties in the GEMS retrieval.

  • With the development of sensor and satellite technology, numerous high-resolution and multi-spectral satellite images have been available. Due to their wavelength-dependent reflection, transmission, and scattering characteristics, multi-spectral satellite images can provide complementary information for earth observation. In particular, the short-wave infrared (SWIR) band can penetrate certain types of atmospheric aerosols from the benefit of the reduced Rayleigh scattering effect, which allows for a clearer view and more detailed information to be captured from hazed surfaces compared to the visible band. In this study, we proposed a multi-resolution transform-based image fusion method to combine visible and SWIR satellite images. The purpose of the fusion method is to generate a single integrated image that incorporates complementary information such as detailed background information from the visible band and land cover information in the haze region from the SWIR band. For this purpose, this study applied the Laplacian pyramid-based multi-resolution transform method, which is a representative image decomposition approach for image fusion. Additionally, we modified the multiresolution fusion method by combining a haze-guided weight map based on the prior knowledge that SWIR bands contain more information in pixels from the haze region. The proposed method was validated using very high-resolution satellite images from Worldview-3, containing multi-spectral visible and SWIR bands. The experimental data including hazed areas with limited visibility caused by smoke from wildfires was utilized to validate the penetration properties of the proposed fusion method. Both quantitative and visual evaluations were conducted using image quality assessment indices. The results showed that the bright features from the SWIR bands in the hazed areas were successfully fused into the integrated feature maps without any loss of detailed information from the visible bands.
