This paper describes the development of a simulator which can numerically calculate an image to be acquired in a machine vision system for automated optical inspection. The simulator is based on a ray tracing technique and composed of three modules which are an illuminating system, a specimen and an imaging system. Kinds of model parameters for modules and their values are carefully chosen from the direct measurement and the observation of related phenomena. Finally, the validity of the simulator is evaluated by logical analysis and by comparison with measured images.
The 'Amon-Ra' instrument of the proposed 'EARTHSHINE' satellite is a dual (i.e. imaging and energy) channel instrument for monitoring the total solar irradiance (TSI) and the Earth's irradiance at around the L1 halo orbit. Earlier studies for this instrument include, but not limited to, design and construction of breadboard Amon-Ra imaging channel, stray light suppression and system performance computation using Integrated Ray Tracing (IRT) technique. The Amon-Ra instrument is required to produce 0.3% in uncertainty for both Sunlight and Earthlight measurement. In this study, we report accurate estimation of the output electric signal derived from the orbital variation of radiant exitance from the Sun and the Earth arriving at the aperture and detector plane of the Amon-Ra. For this, orbital irradiance are computed analytically first and then confirmed by simulation using Integrated Ray Tracing (IRT) model. Specially, the results show the arriving power at the bolometer detector surface is $1.24{\mu}W$ for the Sunlight and $1.28{\mu}W$ for the Earthlight, producing the output signal pulses of 34.31 mV and 35.47 mV respectively. These results demonstrate successfully that the arriving radiative power is well within the bolometer detector dynamic range and, therefore, the proposed detector can be used for the in-orbit measurement sequence. We discuss the computational details and implications as well as the simulation results.
We developed a new x-ray image sensor utilizing a reflection-mode liquid crystal panel as its sensitive element, and tested its functionality by using it to obtain an x-ray image of a printed circuit board. In the liquid crystal x-ray image sensors hitherto reported, the liquid crystal layer is in direct contact with the photoconductive film which is deposited on a glass substrate. In the fabrication of the new x-ray image sensor, a liquid crystal panel is fabricated in the first step by using a pair of glass plates of a few centimeters thicknrss. Then one of the glass substrates is ground until its thickness is reduced to about $60\;{\mu}m$. After polishing the glass plate, dielectric films for high reflectance at 630 nm, a film of amorphous selenium for photoconduction, and a transparent conductive film for electrode are deposited in sequence. The new x-ray image sensor has several merits: primarily, fabrication of a large area sensor is more easily compared with the old fashioned x-ray image sensors. Since the reflection type liquid crystal panel has a very steep response curve, the new x-ray sensor has much more sensitivity to x-rays compared with the conventional x-ray area sensor, and the radiation dosage can be reduced down to less then 20%. By combining the new x-ray sensor with CCD camera technology, real-time x-ray images can be easily captured. We report the structure, fabrication process and characteristics of the new x-ray image sensor.
This paper presents a new method for designing a lens system stable against chromatic variation at a specified wavelength. Conventional lenses are corrected for chromatic aberration, but the new method suppresses chromatic changes of the marginal ray in the image-side. By doing so, paraxial properties of the lens system are stabilized against chromatic variation. Since the new method is based on paraxial ray tracing, the stabilizing conditions against chromatic variation are given by recurrence formulas. However, there is an analytic solution for the case of a cemented doublet in the air. A stable doublet at 405 nm wavelength is designed and analyzed.
In this study, inhomogeneous amplitude modulation effects on the imaging performance a lens system are expermentally investigated by measuring the diffraction OTF. The lens under the test is a binocular objective made in Korea. Inhomogeneous amplitude modulation is carried out by positioning the modulator cross contacted to the lens under test which is illuminated by collimated light beam. The aberration characteristics of the lens under test are examined by caculating the ray-fan through finite ray tracing. The MTFs of the lens illuminated by the homogeneous and inhomogeneous light beam are measured on the Gaussian image plane and compared with one another.
Exact optical characterization of virtual and augmented reality devices using conventional luminance measuring methods is a time-consuming process. A new measurement method is proposed to estimate in a relatively short time the boundary of ray trajectories emitting from a specific position on a virtual images. It is assumed that the virtual image can be modeled to be formed in front of one's eyes and seen through some optical aperture (field stop) that limits the field of view. Circular and rectangular shaped virtual images were investigated. From the estimated ray boundary, optical characteristics, such as the viewing direction and three dimensional range inside which a eye can observe the specified positions of the virtual image, were derived. The proposed method can provide useful data for avoiding the unnecessary measurements required for the previously reported method. Therefore, this method can be complementary to the previously reported method for reducing the whole measurement time of optical characteristics.

The normal low-cost manufacturing process for freeform vehicle side mirrors causes deviations from the design curvature. Here, an improved manufacturing process is proposed, combining photorealistic ray-traced visualization of each deviation and subsequent analysis of its deviated reflective scene compared to that of the original design. The proposed mechanism successfully highlights the overlap and mismatch regions of deviated reflected scenes with reference to the desired reflective scenes. We benchmarked the robustness of freeform mirror manufacturing by evaluating the 10, 20, and 30% root-mean-square (RMS) deviated curvature, and concluded that the acceptable deviation needs to be below RMS20% to avoid mismatched regions that could mislead the driver.

We develop a purification process of $Hg_2Br_2$ raw powders using a physical vapor transport(PVT) process, which is essential for the fabrication of a high performance acousto-optic tunable filter(AOTF) module. Specifically, we characterize and compare three $Hg_2Br_2$ powders: $Hg_2Br_2$ raw powder, $Hg_2Br_2$ powder purified under pumping conditions, and $Hg_2Br_2$ powder purified under vacuum sealing. Before and after purification, we characterize the powder samples through X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The corresponding results indicate that physical properties of the $Hg_2Br_2$ compound are not damaged even after the purification process. The impurities and concentration in the purified $Hg_2Br_2$ powder are evaluated by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy. Notably, compared to the sample purified under pumping conditions, the purification process under vacuum sealing results in a higher purity $Hg_2Br_2$ (99.999 %). In addition, when the second vacuum sealing purification process is performed, the remaining impurities are almost removed, giving rise to $Hg_2Br_2$ with ultra-high purity. This high purification process might be possible due to independent control of impurities and $Hg_2Br_2$ materials under the optimized vacuum sealing. Preparation of such a highly purified $Hg_2Br_2$ materials will pave a promising way toward a high-quality $Hg_2Br_2$ single crystal and then high performance AOTF modules.
In nanomagnetism, one of the crucial scientific questions is whether magnetic behaviors are deterministic or stochastic on a nanoscale. Apart from the exciting physical issue, this question is also of paramount highest relevance for using magnetic materials in a wealth of technological applications such as magnetic storage and sensor devices. In the past, the research on the stochasticity of a magnetic process has been mainly done by macroscopic measurements, which only offer ensemble-averaged information. To give more accurate answer for the question and to fully understand related underlying physics, the direct observation of statistical behaviors in magnetic structures and magnetic phenomena utilizing advanced characterization techniques is highly required. One of the ideal tools for such study is a full-field soft X-ray microscope since it enables imaging of magnetic structures on the large field of view within a few seconds. Here we review the stochastic behaviors of various magnetic processes including magnetization reversal process in thin films, magnetic domain wall motions in nanowires, and magnetic vortex formations in nanodisks studied by full-field soft X-ray microscopy. The origin triggering the stochastic nature witnessed in each magnetic process and the way to control the intrinsic nature are also discussed.
In recent years, many candidates for extra-solar planet have been discovered from various measurement techniques. Fueled by such discoveries, new space missions for direct detection of earth-like planets have been proposed and actively studied. TPF instrument is a fair example of such scientific endeavors. One of the many technical problems that space missions such as TPF would need to solve is deconvolution of the collapsed (i.e. spatially and temporally) spectral signal arriving at the detector surface and the deconvolution computation may fall into a local minimum solution, instead of the global minimum solution, in the optimization process, yielding mis-interpretation of the spectral signal from the potential earth-like planets. To this extend, observational and theoretical understanding on the spectral bio-signal from the Earth serves as the key reference datum for the accurate interpretation of the planetary bio-signatures from other star systems. In this study, we present ray tracing computational model for the on-going simulation study on the Earth bio-signatures. A multi-layered atmospheric model and sea ice variation model were added to the existing target Earth model and a hypothetical space instrument (called AmonRa) observed the spectral bio-signals of the model Earth from the L1 halo orbit. The resulting spectrums of the Earth show well known "red-edge" spectrums as well as key molecular absorption lines important to harbor life forms. The model details, computational process and the resulting bio-signatures are presented together with implications to the future study direction.
