  • The substitution of fossil fuels with biofuels has been proposed by the European Union (EU) as part of a strategy to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from road transport, increase security of energy supply and support the development of rural communities. Vegetable oils and their derivatives (especially methyl esters), commonly referred to as 'biodiesel', are prominent candidates as alternative diesel fuels. They have advanced from being purely experimental fuels to the initial stages of commercialization. They are technically competitive with or offer technical advantages compared to conventional diesel fuel. However, several problems remain including economics, combustions, some emissions, lube oil contamination, and low-temperature properties. Therefore, quality control of fuel-related properties of biodiesel is needed to obtain consistent engine performance by fuel users. The quality of the fuel is affected by the oil composition. Rapeseed oil has been targeted for fuel use because it produces an oil with a close-to-optimum set of fuel characteristics. In this paper we have reviewed past and current efforts, both by traditional seed-breeding methods and by genetic engineering, to modify rapeseed oil quality and yield.

A Study on the Heated Edible Oils( I ) -Flow Properties of Soybean, Rapeseed, Rice bran, Corn and Perilla Oils- (가열식용유(加熱食用油)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) ( I ) -대두(大豆), 채종(菜種), 미당(米糖), 옥수수, 들깨유(油) 유동성(流動性) 관(關)해서-)

  • Flow properties of heated edible oils, such as soybean, rapeseed, rice bran, corn and perilla oils, were measured with Maron-Belner type capillary viscometer. These oils were heated at $180{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ (general cooking temperature) for $5{\sim}20$ hours except soybean oils ($5{\sim}40$ hours). Fluidities of these heated oils except rice bran oil were decreased according to heating time and decreasing ratio of fluidity was outstanding after 15 hour heating in corn oil and 20 hours heating in soybean and perilla oils. All the oils examined in this experiments except rice bran oil showed non-Newtonian motion after 15 hour hinting at high shear stress and Newtonian motion at less than 10 hour heating. In the soybean oil non-Newtonian flow property was outstanding after 30 hour heating at $180{\pm}5^{\circ}C$. Rice bran oil exhibit characteristic flow property, that is, non heated rice bran oil has lowest fluidity but heated one has highest fluidity compared to other oils examined in this experiment. Change of fluidity with extension of heating time was not detected and non heated rice bran oil showed non-Newtonian motion.

Mcl-PHAs Produced by Pseudomonas sp. Gl01 Using Fed-Batch Cultivation with Waste Rapeseed Oil as Carbon Source

  • The present study describes medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHAs) production by the Pseudomonas Gl01 strain isolated from mixed microbial communities utilized for PHAs synthesis. A two-step fed-batch fermentation was conducted with glucose and waste rapeseed oil as the main carbon source for obtaining cell growth and mcl-PHAs accumulation, respectively. The results show that the Pseudomonas Gl01 strain is capable of growing and accumulating mcl-PHAs using a waste oily carbon source. The biomass value reached 3.0 g/l of CDW with 20% of PHAs content within 48 h of cultivation. The polymer was purified from lyophilized cells and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC). The results revealed that the monomeric composition of the obtained polyesters depended on the available substrate. When glucose was used in the growth phase, 3-hydroxyundecanoate and 3-hydroxydodecanoate were found in the polymer composition, whereas in the PHAs-accumulating stage, the Pseudomonas Gl01 strain synthesized mcl-PHAs consisting mainly of 3-hydroxyoctanoate and 3-hydroxydecanoate. The transcriptional analysis using reverse-transcription real-time PCR reaction revealed that the phaC1 gene could be transcribed simultaneously to the phaZ gene.

Tylosin Production by Mutant Resistant to Oleic Acid (Oleic Acid 내성균주로부터 Tylosin 생산)

  • When rapeseed oil as the carbon source was used for tylosin production from Streptomyces fradiae TP-1239 was very sensitive to oleic acid. Cell growth was restrained by adding 0.8 g/l of oleic acid to the culture broth. Mutant strain TM-224-1 resistant to 1.2 g/l of oleic acid was obtained by screening in solid and liquid media containing oleic acid. The uptake rate of oleic acid by TM-224-1 was approximately 3.8 fold higher than the parent strain. For comparing the TM-224-1 and the parent strain, batch cultures were carried out in a jar fermentor. Cell growth of TM-224-1 strain was higher than the parent strain after two days of culturing. However, after four days of culturing, it was similar to that of the parent strain. The amount of rapeseed oil consumed by TM-224-1 and the parent strain were 60.5 and 78.2 g/l, respectively. The production and yield of tylosin was aproximately 2.0 and 3.2 fold higher than the parent strain, respectively. From these results, it was concluded that this mutant, which was resistant to oleic acid, has improved tylosin production.

Influence of Reaction Parameters on Preparation of Biodiesel from Rapeseed Oil using Supercritical Methanol (초임계 메탄올을 이용한 유채유 바이오디젤 제조에 대한 반응인자들의 영향)

  • In this study, non-catalytic transesterification from rapeseed oil using supercritical methanol was carried out by varying the operation parameters such as temperature ($320{\sim}365{^{\circ}C}$), time (0~20 min), pressure (10~35 MPa), molar ratio of oil to methanol (1 : 15~60) and agitation speed (0~500 rpm). In order to evaluate the effects of reaction parameters on the content of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), we carried out the study using a batch reactor. The content of FAMEs increased when the temperature increased. However, the content of FAMEs decreased with temperature above $335^{\circ}C$ and time above 5 min. The content of FAMEs increased with increasing the molar ratio of methanol to oil but the content of FAMEs was slightly affected by molar ratio of oil to methanol above 1 : 45 and pressure above 20 MPa. It was found that the agitation speed above 100 rpm slightly affected the content of FAMEs. The highest content of FAMEs in biodiesel (95%) was obtained under the reaction conditions: temperature of 335 ${^{\circ}C}$, time of 10 min, pressure of 20 MPa, molar ratio of 1 : 45 (oil to methanol) and agitation speed of 250 rpm.

Effects of Frying Oils and Storage Conditions on the Rancidity of Yackwa (약과(藥菓)의 산패(酸敗)에 미치는 튀김기름 및 저장조건의 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the storage stability of Yackwa (a Korean fried cake made from wheat flour, honey and 20% oil), with the variation in frying oils (soybean oil of fresh or heat-treated corn oil and rapeseed oil) and storage conditions (temperature, humidity and in dark or under fluorescent light) for 20 weeks period. In $5^{\circ}C$ storage, acid and peroxide values increased slowly, showing the peroxide value of 20 meq/kg after 13 weeks. In $40^{\circ}C$ storage, acid and peroxide values increased remarkably. The product became harder at storage humidity of 25% and softer by moistening at storage humidity of 80%. Acid and peroxide values of Yackwa from corn, rapeseed and soybean oils increased with storage period, to a different extent. The values of fluorescent groups, especially rapeseed oil group, were higher than those of control groups and the heat-treated oil groups were higher than those of fresh oil groups. Sensory scores for rancid flavor were gradually increased with the storage period in all groups. There was no significant difference with the kinds of frying oils, storage conditions and heat treatment. Correlation of sensory scores with acid values was positive throughout whole storage period, with low ${\gamma}-values$. Its correlation with peroxide values was positive up to 6th week but negative at 9th week of storage.

  • Recently worldwide concern and research is being actively conducted on green energy which can reduce environmental pollution. A plant such as the natural rapeseed oil, soybean oil, palm, etc. is used as a bio source in home and industry. Biofuels is a sustainable fuel having economically benefits and decreasing environmental pollution problems caused due to fossil fuel, and it can be applied to the conventional diesel engine without changing the existing institutional structure. Waste vegetable oil contains a high cetane number and viscosity component, the low carbon and oxygen content. A lot of research is progressing about the conversion of waste vegetable oil as renewable clean energy. In this study, waste oil was prepared to waste cooking oil generated from the living environment, and applied to diesel engine to confirm the possibility and cost-effectiveness of biodiesel blend waste oil. As a result, brake specific fuel consumption and NOx was increased, carbon monoxide and soot was decreased.

Effects of Vegetable Oil Diets on Liver Lipid in Cholesterol-fed Rats (식물성 유지가 콜레스테롤 투여 흰쥐의 간장지질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was performed observe the effect of vegetable oil on the liver of 0.5% cholesterol-fed rats. In this experiment, male rats of Sprague-Dawley strain were used. The rats were divided into 5groups which were fed differently either for 8 weeks: basal diet, 20% sunflower oil diet, 20% soybean oil diet, 20% rapeseed oil diet.,20% coconut oil diet. The total cholesterol, triglyceride level in the liver were showed tendency of increase with increasing of P/S ratios. Bile acid excretion in the fecal increased with increasing of P/S ratios. The value of TBA in the serum and liver were increased in proportion to the amount of polyunsaturated fatty acid. The liver fatty acid of coconut-fed group showed larger variation than fatty acid of the cocount oil. The fat chang of sunflower oil diet in the liver showed the largest change.

  • To clarify the tribological properties of biodegradable lubricating oils, the four-ball tests were carried out under dip-feed lubrication using a Soda-type four-ball machine. The test balls were lubricated with soybean oil, rapeseed oil, corn oil and turbine oil. From the tests, the coefficient of friction for all the test balls lubricated with biodegradable lubricating oils was lower than that for the test ball lubricated with turbine oil. Further, from the calculation of the pV value, it was clear that the seizure resistance for all the test balls lubricated with biodegradable lubricating oils was higher than that for the test ball lubricated with turbine oil.

  • Recently, researches on oil crops Ln Korea were breeding on edible oil crops such as rapeseed sesame, peanut , periLla.Numerous varieties were released as a result of ective breedingworks on edible oil crops, that is 7 rape varieties including Yu-dal, Mokpo-11, Yongdang, Nozeogchae, Naehan, Yeongsanyuchae and Ch-eongpungyuchae (hybrid),5 varieties sesame including Suweon-5,9,21,Kwangsan99ae and Dabaekggae, 5 peanut varieties including Seodun-tangkonT,Yeonghotangkong, 01tankong , ShinpungtanTkong and SaedI-tanGkong, 3 periLLa varietLes including Daegu, Suweon8 and 10,res-pectively. This varietLes showed a good oil quality with high o-Leic and LinoLeic acids content, but periLLa oil seemed to be un-suitable for a edible use, since about 53 Percent of Its fatty a-cids was in the from of unsaturated LinoLenic acid.
