In this paper, ranging code collision probability and ranging period which are two important performance measures for code division multiple access (CDMA)-type ranging in wireless broadband (WiBro) system are mathematically derived. Based on the analysis, the appropriate ranging management solution for maintaining the ranging collision probability below a certain threshold level and correctly recognizing the transmitted ranging code against propagation delay is obtained in terms of the number of ranging codes, the number of ranging regions, and ranging period. In this analysis, user mobility features such as speed and moving direction are also considered.

In Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) systems, timing synchronization in uplink is accomplished by an initial uplink synchronization called an initial ranging process. The Base Station's receiver synchronizes the symbol timing to specific user's symbol and the other user's symbols have some Symbol Timing Offset (STO). Linear phase shift is occurred by each user's STO in an OFDMA symbol. The Multiple Access Interference (MAI) caused by the summation of each user's linear phase shift degrades the performance of ranging code detection. In this paper, we propose an initial ranging symbol structure with common ranging code for phase shift estimation and compensation. We car estimate the average of phase shift that is generated by each user's STO and compensate this phase shift by using common ranging code. This scheme will suppress the MAI and provide better detection performance than conventional process.
UWB (Ultra Wide Band) refers to a system with a bandwidth of over 500 MHz or a bandwidth of 20% of the center frequency. It is robust against channel fading and has a wide signal bandwidth. Using the IR-UWB based ranging system, it is possible to obtain decimeter-level ranging accuracy. Furthermore, IR-UWB system enables acquisition over glass or cement with high resolution. In recent years, IR-UWB-based ranging chipsets have become cheap and popular, and it has become possible to implement positioning systems of several tens of centimeters. The system can be configured as one-way ranging (OWR) positioning system for fast ranging and TWR (two-way ranging) positioning system for cheap and robust ranging. On the other hand, the ranging based positioning system has a limitation on the number of terminals for localization because it takes time to perform a communication procedure to perform ranging. To overcome this problem, code multiplexing and channel multiplexing are performed. However, errors occur in measurement due to interference between channels and code, multipath, and so on. The measurement filtering is used to reduce the measurement error, but more fundamentally, techniques for removing these measurements should be studied. First, the TWR based positioning was analyzed from a stochastic point of view and the effects of outlier measurements were summarized. The positioning algorithm for analytically identifying and removing single outlier is summarized and extended to three dimensions. Through the simulation, we have verified the algorithm to detect and remove single outliers.

In the uplink of OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) based M-WiMAX(Mobile-Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) system, linear phase shift is caused by signals transmitted from multiuser with different delay time and thus, MAI (Multiple Access Interference) occurs. MAI degrades the performance of ranging code detection and delay time estimation in the uplink. Therefore, in this paper, we propose ranging algorithm, applying SIC (Successive Interference Cancellation) to the conventional ranging algorithm, to minimize MAI and to improve ranging performance. The proposed ranging algorithm is verified through the Monte Carlo simulation, which shows the improved performance of ranging code detection and delay time estimation compared to the conventional algorithms. Through compared with random access of the 3GPP LTE, we can know limit of ranging performance.

In the present, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) that wireless access scheme for high speed data transmission is noticed in mobile communication market and OFDMA/TDD scheme will be used combining Time Division Duplex (TDD) scheme based on OFDMA. The Base Station's receiver synchronizes the symbol timing to anyone user's symbol and the other user's symbols have some Symbol Timing Offset (STO). Linear phase shift is occurred by each user's STO in an OFDMA symbol and the Multiple Access Interference (MAI) caused by the summation of each user's linear phase shift degrades the performance of ranging code detection. In this paper, we analyze the ranging code detection performance for each users STO in OFDMA/TDD system. Simulation results show that the more users access and mobile speed increase, the more ranging code detection performance degrades.

In this paper, we propose a MLKA (Multi-Level Keep-Alive) algorithm based on PRCG (Periodic In this paper, we propose a MLKA (Multi-Level Keep-Alive) algorithm based on PRCG (Periodic Ranging Code Group), in which periodic ranging codes are divided into groups. The AP (Access Point) performs this algorithm when a periodic ranging code arrives at the AP in a WiBro (Wireless Broadband Internet) system. In order to increase the traffic radio bandwidth resource efficiency in this system, we propose the multi-level keep-alive algorithm for finding abnormal AT (Access Terminal). From simulation results, it is verified our proposed MLKA algorithm based on PRCG can provide higher traffic radio resource efficiency compared to message-driven keep-alive algorithms.
In this study, the performance of ranging techniques for the Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO) space communication system is investigated. KPLO is the first lunar mission of Korea, and pseudo-noise (PN) ranging will be used to support the mission along with sequential ranging. We compared the performance of both ranging techniques using the criteria of accuracy, acquisition probability, and measurement time. First, we investigated the end-to-end accuracy error of a ranging technique incorporating all sources of errors such as from ground stations and the spacecraft communication system. This study demonstrates that increasing the clock frequency of the ranging system is not required when the dominant factor of accuracy error is independent of the thermal noise of the ranging technique being used in the system. Based on the understanding of ranging accuracy, the measurement time of PN and sequential ranging are further investigated and compared, while both techniques satisfied the accuracy and acquisition requirements. We demonstrated that PN ranging performed better than sequential ranging in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime where KPLO will be operating, and we found that the T2B (weighted-voting balanced Tausworthe, voting v = 2) code is the best choice among the PN codes available for the KPLO mission.

The localization algorithm(LAtu) using the IDentification Code($C_{ID}$) is suggested in RSS(Received Signal Strength) based Wireless Sensor Network(WSN), and the localization system using the suggested algorithm is designed and implemented in this paper. In addition to this, the performance of ranging correction quality and localization error of the localization system(System(LAtu)) that is developed using the LAtu is analyzed and compared with that of the localization system(System(LAieee)) using the channel model of IEEE 802.15.4 standard(LAieee) by the actual experimentation. From the experimentation, the ranging correction quality is analyzed that the LAtu is highly better than the channel model of LAieee about 34% under the distance between the moving module and the beacon module($D_{MM-BM}$) is 2m, and is also a few better than that of the LAieee about average 5% under the $D_{MM-BM}$ is above 5m. The localization error quality of the System(LAtu) is lower than that of the System(LAieee)) about 1cm under the lecture room and 4cm in the large lecture room.
It is well known that the encrypted ranging signal, such as GPS P(Y) code, is immune to spoofing attack. However, in order for users to use the signal, there needs permission from the operator. And also there are many restrictions for use because of security issues. In this paper, a ground reference station equipped with high-gain directional antenna and a user receiver were simulated. In the reference station, the encrypted code can be demodulated from the high-gain signal. And then the code can be used to detect spoofing attack in the user receiver. This paper proposes the spoofing detection method using the encrypted signal and deals with simulation results.

This paper presents a fast and accurate ranging algorithm for the WiBro system. The proposed algorithm detects a received ranging code and estimates its propagation delay using the correlation characteristics of the PRBS (Pseudo Random Binary Sequence) and the circular shift property of the discrete Fourier transform operator. The proposed ranging algorithm was applied to array antenna systems to show how it could improve the ranging performance of an array antenna system compared to a conventional base station system, which uses only a single antenna.
