  • In recent years, China's high-speed railway (HSR) line continues to expand into seismically active regions. Analyzing the features of earthquake rail irregularity is crucial in this situation. This study first established and experimentally validated a finite element (FE) model of bridge-track. The FE model was then combined with earthquake record database to generate the earthquake rail irregularity library. The sample library was used to construct a model of desired earthquake rail irregularity based on signal processing (SFT) and hypothesis principle. Finally, the effects of random pier height and random span number on desired irregularity were analyzed. Herein, an equivalent method of calculating earthquake rail irregularities for random structures was proposed. The results of this study show that the amplitude of desired irregularity is found to increase with increasing pier height. When calculating the desired irregularity of a structure with unequal pier heights, the structure can be regarded as that with equal pier heights (taking the largest pier height). For a structure with the span number large than 9, its desired irregularity can be considered equal to that of a 9-span structure. For the structures with both random pier heights and random span number, their desired irregularities are obtained by equivalent calculations for pier height and span number, respectively.

  • Recently, because of increasing in downpour and typhoon, which are caused by climate changes, those sedimentation disasters, such as landslide and debris flow, have become frequent. Those sedimentation disasters take place in natural slope. In order to predict debris flow damage range within wide area, the response model is more appropriate than numerical analysis. However, to make a prediction using Random Walk Model, the regional parameters is needed to be decided, since the regional environments conditions are not always same. This random Walk Model is a probability model with easy calculation method, and simplified slope factor. The objective of this study is to calculate the optimal parameters of Random Walk Model for Umyeon mountain in Seoul, where the large debris flow has occurred in 2011. Debris flow initiation zones and sedimentation zones were extracted through field survey, aerial photograph and visual reading of debris flow before and after its occurrence via LiDAR DEM.

  • Let ${X_n,\;n\geq1}$ be a sequence of independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables (r.vs.), defined on a probability space ($\Omega$,A,P), and let ${N_n,\;n\geq1}$ be a sequence of positive integer-valued r.vs., defined on the same probability space ($\Omega$,A,P). Furthermore, we assume that the r.vs. $N_n$, $n\geq1$ are independent of all r.vs. $X_n$, $n\geq1$. In present paper we are interested in asymptotic behaviors of the random sum $S_{N_n}=X_1+X_2+\cdots+X_{N_n}$, $S_0=0$, where the r.vs. $N_n$, $n\geq1$ obey some defined probability laws. Since the appearance of the Robbins's results in 1948 ([8]), the random sums $S_{N_n}$ have been investigated in the theory probability and stochastic processes for quite some time (see [1], [4], [2], [3], [5]). Recently, the random sum approach is used in some applied problems of stochastic processes, stochastic modeling, random walk, queue theory, theory of network or theory of estimation (see [10], [12]). The main aim of this paper is to establish some results related to the asymptotic behaviors of the random sum $S_{N_n}$, in cases when the $N_n$, $n\geq1$ are assumed to follow concrete probability laws as Poisson, Bernoulli, binomial or geometry.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop age-biomass model in Chungnam region containing random effect. To develop the biomass model by species and tree component, data for Pinus densiflora in central region is collected to 30 plots (150 trees). The mixed model were used to fixed effect in the age-biomass relation for Pinus densiflora, with random effect representing correlation of survey area were obtained. To verify the evaluation of the model for random effect, the akaike information criterion (abbreviated as, AIC) was used to calculate the variance-covariance matrix, and residual of repeated data. The estimated variance-covariance matrix, and residual were -1.0022, 0.6240, respectively. The model with random effect (AIC=377.2) has low AIC value, comparison with other study relating to random effects. It is for this reason that random effect associated with categorical data were used in the data fitting process, the model can be calibrated to fit the Chungnam region by obtaining measurements. Therefore, the results of this study could be useful method for developing biomass model using random effects by region.

  • This paper describes a hardware implementation of a true random number generator (TRNG) for information security applications. A new approach for TRNG design was proposed by adopting random transition rules in cellular automata and applying different transition rules at every time step. The TRNG circuit was implemented on Spartan-6 FPGA device, and its hardware operation generating random data with 100 MHz clock frequency was verified. For the random data of 2×107 bits extracted from the TRNG circuit implemented in FPGA device, the randomness characteristics of the generated random data was evaluated by the NIST SP 800-22 test suite, and all of the fifteen test items were found to meet the criteria. The TRNG in this paper was implemented with 139 slices of Spartan-6 FPGA device, and it offers 600 Mbps of the true random number generation with 100 MHz clock frequency.

  • The study is to develop safety performance functions(SPFs) for urban intersections using random effects Tobit regression model and to analyze correlations between crashes and factors. Also fixed effects Tobit regression model was estimated to compare and analyze model validation with random effects model. As a result, AADT, speed limits, number of lanes, land usage, exclusive right turn lanes and front traffic signal were found to be significant. For comparing statistical significance between random and fixed effects model, random effects Tobit regression model of total crash rate could be better statistical significance with $R^2_p$ : 0.418, log-likelihood at convergence: -3210.103, ${\rho}^2$: 0.056, MAD: 19.533, MAPE: 75.725, RMSE: 26.886 comparing with $R^2_p$ : 0.298, log-likelihood at convergence: -3276.138, ${\rho}^2$: 0.037, MAD: 20.725, MAPE: 82.473, RMSE: 27.267 for the fixed model. Also random effects Tobit regression model of injury crash rate has similar results of model statistical significant with random effects Tobit regression model.

  • The purpose of this paper was to figure out the efficiencies of two sampling techniques, a simple random sampling and a two-stage P.P.S. (probability proportional to size) sampling, in estimating the volume of the mature coniferous stands near Salzburg, Austria. With black-and-white infrared photographs at a scale 1:10,000, the following four classes were considered; non-forest, young stands less than 40 years, mature beech and mature coniferous stands. After the classification, a field survey was carried out using a relascope with a BAF (basal area factor) 4. For the simple random sampling, 99 points were sampled, while for the P.P.S. sampling, 75 points were sampled in the mature coniferous stands. The following results were obtained. 1) The mean standing coniferous volume estimate was $422.0m^3/ha$ for the simple random sampling and $433.5m^3/ha$ for the P.P.S. sampling method. However, the difference was not statistically significant. 2) The required number of sampling points for a 5% sampling error were 170 for the two stage P.P.S. sampling, but 237 for the simple random sampling. 3) The two stage P.P.S. method reduced field survey time by 17% as compared to the simple random sampling.

  • This study investigated the degree of understanding pre-service teachers' random variable concept, based on the attention and the importance for developing pre-service teachers' ability on statistical reasoning in statistics education. To accomplish this, the subject of this study was 70 pre-service teachers belonged to three universities respectively. The teachers were given to 7 tasks on random variable and requested to solve them in 40 minutes. The tasks consisted of three contents in large; 1) one was on the definition of random variables, 2) the other was on the understanding of random variables in different/diverse conditions, and 3) another was on problem solving relevant to random variable concept. The findings are as follows. First, while 20% of pre-service teachers understood the definition of random variable correctly, most teachers could not distinguish between random variable and variable or probability. Second, there was a significant difference in understanding random variables in different/diverse conditions. Namely, the degree of understanding on the continuous random variable was superior to that of discrete random variable and also the degree of understanding on the equal distribution was superior to that of unequality distribution. Third, three types of problems relevant to random variable concept dealt with in this study were finding a sample space and an elementary event, and finding a probability value. In result, the teachers responded to the problem on finding a probability value most correctly and on the contrary to this, they had the mot difficulty in solving the problem on finding a sample space.

  • The vibration control problem of structures with random parameters is discussed, which is approximated by a deterministic one. A method for calculating the standard deviations of eigenvalues of the closed-loop systems is presented by using the random perturbation. The method presented in this paper will not require the distribution function of the random parameters of the systems other than their means and variances. Similarly, the distribution function of the random eigenvalues will not be computed other than their means and variances. The standard deviations of eigenvalues of the uncertain closed-loop systems can be used to estimate the stability robustness. The present method is applied to a vibration control system to illustrate the application. The numerical results show that the present method is effective.

  • This paper presents image analysis method using a Markov random field(MRF) model. Particulary, image esgmentation is to partition the given image into regions. This scheme is first segmented into regions, and the obtained domain knowledge is used to obtain the improved segmented image by a Markov random field model. The method is a maximum a posteriori(MAP) estimation with the MRF model and its associated Gibbs distribution. MAP estimation method is applied to capture the natural image by TMS320C80(MVP) and to realize the segmented image by a MRF model.
