  • We have studied on the keratinocytes differentiation and skin barrier function using Adenophorae radix (A. radix) root extract, which was known to contain triterpenoid, saponin and starch. A. radix root extracts showed the $PPAR{\alpha}$ expression level of Wy-14,643 $0.5-1.0{\mu}M$ in CV-1 cells. The cornified envelop formation (CE) of human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT) and normal human keratinocyte (NHK) showed a statistically significant increased compared to the control. When HaCaT cells were treated with A. radix root extract, transglutaminase (TGase-1) was significantly increased. As a result of clinical study of the simple cosmetic formulation containing A. radix root extract for about 2 weeks, TEWL values were significantly decreased and water contents were increased. The ceramides, which were obtained from the inner forearm, were also significantly increased statistically. We suggest that the A. radix root extract can be used as a preventive and therapeutic agent for skin diseases such as dry skin and atopy.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of the Ginseng radix in osteoporosis of the oophorectomized rats. In this experiment, the rats were oophorectomized and administered the water extracts of the Ginseng radix. The spinal bone mineral density, calcium, phosphorus and ash weight of the bones were measured. The spinal bone mineral density was significantly increased in the ovariectomized (OVX)-Ginseng radix group at 8 weeks as compared to the OVX-saline group. Furthermore, the calcium and phosphorus contents of the femoral and fibula-tibia were significantly increased in the OVX-Ginseng radix group as compared to the OVX-saline group. The ash weights of the femoral and fibula-tibial bones were increases in the OVX-Ginseng Radix group, although it was not statistically significant. On reviewing these experiments, it appears that the Ginseng radix possess efficacy for the prevention of osteoporosis. Further study would be of value to confirm the efficacy of the Ginseng radix for the treatment and/or prevention of osteoporosis in humans.

  • In this paper, a Radix-8 structure for high-speed FFT is proposed. Even throughput of the Radix-8 FFT is twice than that of the Radix-4 FFT, implementation area of the Radix-8 is larger than that of Radix-4 FFT. But, implementation area of the proposed Radix-8 FFT was reduced by using DA(Distributed Arithmetic) for multiplication. The Verilog-HDL coding results for the proposed FFT structure show 49.2% cell area increment comparison with those of the conventional Radix-4 FFT structure. Namely, to speed up twice, 49.2% of area cost is required. In case of same throughput, power consumption of the proposed structure is reduced by 25.4%.

  • Fast Fourier Transform is the fast implementation of Discrete Fourier Transform, which deletes periodic operation of DFT. According to the definition, radix-2 FFT can be implemented byre cursive call which divides the input signal points into 2 signal points. Because of its time-consuming stack-copy operation, this recursive method is very slow. To overcome this drawback, butterfly operation with signal rearrangement was devised. Based on the ideas of signal rearrangement and butterfly operation, this paper applies the signal rearrangement method to the Radix-3 FFT and checks the validity of this method.

  • Object : This study was carried out to examine the effect of Bupleuri Radix on experimental cholestasis, and make clear apart of this mechanism. Methods : Two models of common bile duct ligation group and taurocholate load group after common bile duct ligation were induced, and Bupleuri Radix extract was taken orally for 14 days. In the 1, 2, 4, 7 and 14 days after treatment, the mitochondrial and microsomal monoamine oxidase(MAO) A and B activities in liver were measured. Results : The mitochondrial MAO A and B activities increased in both Blupleuri Radix treated group after common bile duct ligation and Blupleuri Radix treated group after taurocholate load and common bile duct ligation. MAO A increased in Blupleuri Radix treated group after taurocholate load and common bile duct ligation, and MAO B increased in Blupleuri Radix treated group after common bile duct ligation. The microsomal MAO A activities increased in both Blupleuri Radix treated group after common bile duct ligation and Blupleuri Radix treated group after taurocholate load and common bile duct ligation. Conclusion : According to the result, it is consider that Blupleuri Radix not only improves cholestatis in liver, but also decreases a genetic synthesis of taurocholic acid.

  • Objectives: This study was designed to identify the ergogenic effects of Red ginseng and Paeonia radix mixtures and optimal ratios. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted by administering treatments of Red ginseng and Paeonia radix mixtures to rats and by measuring the time to exhaustion by treadmill running. Results: The treatment of Red ginseng and Paeonia radix mixtures to the rats increased the time to exhaustion by treadmill running. The most potent inhibition of Red ginseng and Paeonia radix mixtures on the 5-HT synthesis and the TPH expression in the dorsal raphe was observed at the dose of 200 mg/kg and the optimal ratio of Red ginseng and Paeonia radix for the maximum efficacy was 50:50. Under normal conditions (not exercise), long-term treatment of Red ginseng and Paeonia radix mixtures did not affect the 5-HT synthesis and the TPH expression in the dorsal raphe, suggesting that Red ginseng and Paeonia radix mixtures does not alter serotonin level in the normal rats. The suppressive effect of Red ginseng and Paeonia radix mixtures on the 5-HT synthesis and the TPH expression during exercise is a possible ergogenic mechanism of these mixtures. Conclusions : Red ginseng and Paeonia radix mixtures reduce exercise-induced fatigue, and have the effect of acting as ergogenic aids on the time to exhaustion by treadmill exercise and on 5-HT synthesis and TPH expression.

  • Background & Objective : Sophorae Radix has been known as an useful plant with anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial activity. Therefore, Sophorae Radix is expected to mitigate and prevent acne by inhibiting the activity of the sebaceous glands and acne bacterium. To evaluate anti-inflammation effect of Sophorae Radix, we applied Sophorae Radix-skin lotion on the patients with acne. Methods : The Sophorae Radix-skin lotion was prepared by dissolving 1% ethanol extract of Sophorae Radix in skin lotion vehicle and treated 2 times everyday for 4 weeks on faces. Follow-up was performed with Janus facial analysis system. Results : Sophorae Radix-skin lotion reduced sebum and porphyrin. However, the Sophorae Radix-skin lotion didn't significantly reduced sebum and porphyrin compared with skin lotion vehicle control group. Conclusion : These results showed that the Sophorae Radix-skin lotion could be used as a pharmaceutical material with anti-inflammatory effects by reducing sebum and porphyrin in acne patient with further clinical research.
