  • Cytogenetic and hematological analysis was performed in peripheral blood of pig in the vicinity of Yeonggwang nuclear power station and control area. The frequency of micronuclei (MN) in peripheral blood lymphocytes from pig was used as a biomarker of radiobiological effects resulting from exposure to environmental radiation. An estimated dose of radiation was calculated by a best fitting linear-quadratic model based on the radiation-induced MN formation from the swine lymphocytes exposed in vitro to radiation over the range from 0 Gy to 4 Gy. MN rates in lymphocytes of pig from Yeonggwang nuclear power station and control area were 10.60/1,000 and 11.10/1,000, respectively. There were no significant differences in MN frequencies and hematological values in pig between Yeonggwang and control area. The study indicates that the MN assay in lymphocyte of pig is a rapid, sensitive and accurate method that can be used to monitor a large population exposed to radiation.

  • The increasing concern over radiation exposure in the nuclear industry has fostered agrressive efforts to reduce the levels of radiation exposure. One area of the effot to reduce the radiation exposure is the development of a remote radiation monitoring system. Remote radiation monitoring can serve many benificaial functions reduce exposure to radiation by plant personnel, impruve the quality of the data that is collected and recognize the radiation environment easily. Radiation mapping system gives a good information that represents radiation level distribution. The system we have developed consists of a data acquistion parts, mobile robot and remote control parts. Data acquisition parts consist of radiation detection module and vision acquistion module which collect radiation data, visiion data and distance information. In remote control parts, the acquision data are processed and displayed. We have constructed radiation mapping image by overlaying the vision and radiation data. The radiation mapping techniques for displaying the results of the survey in an easily comprehendable form will facilitate a better understanding of the radiation environment in the facility. This system can reduce workers radiation exposure and aid to help work plan, so it has significant benifits in cost and safety.

  • Kerma Area Product (KAP) is best indicator of radiation monitoring on radiographic examinations. KAP can be measured differently depending on the X-ray irradiation area, air kerma, souce-skin distance, type of equipment, etc. The major factors are exposure area and the air krema. The KAP currently used only considers the exposure area with X-rays and has a problem that KAP is always excessively overestimated from the dose received by an actual subject. Therefore, in this study, in order to measure the accurate KAP, a new area dose calculation that can be calculated by dividing the area where the actual X-ray is irradiated is presented, and the KAP is the real area. We compared and analyzed how much it was overestimated compared to the dose. The Skull AP projection and seven other projection were compared and analyzed, and the KAP was overestimated in each test by 52% to 60%. In this way, the effective KAP (EKAP) calculation developed through this study should be utilized to prevent extra calculation of the existing KAP, and only the accurate patient subject area should be calculated to derive the accurate area dose value. EKAP is helpful for control the patient's exposure dose more finely, and it is useful for the quality control of medical radiation exposure.

  • In this paper, we propose Total RMS(Radiation Monitoring System) for nuclear and nuclear medicine. The proposed system can expand and control Stack Monitor, Area Monitor, and Water(Liquid) Monitor into one system, and can monitor the signals measured by each radiation detector in an integrated manner. The proposed system consists of a sensor module that detects the radiation, a display unit that displays the radiation dose near the radiation detection location, an alarm unit that reports the alarm when the detected radiation dose reaches the danger level, A Main Hub for collecting and storing the contents to the remote monitoring system, and an RMS Monitoring Unit for clearly displaying the measured radiation dose at the remote site. In order to evaluate the performance of Total RMS for the proposed nuclear and nuclear medicine field, it is confirmed that the measurement uncertainty is less than 8.5% and it operates normally within ${\pm}15%$ of the international standard.

  • Among the various building envelope elements, the glass area takes up the largest portion in the office building design. However, a large area of glass can cause problems such as excessive solar radiation, thermal comfort, and glare. Thus it is important to install the glass area to an appropriate level, and control solar radiation and inflow of daylight with blind devices. This study aims to improve the visual performance of the work plane through the automatic control of the venetian blinds. A total of eight kinds of control strategies were chosen; Case 1 does not control the blinds, Case 2 with the blind slats fixed at the angle of 0 degree, Case 3 to 6 using the existing blind control programs, and Case 7 and 8 with improved blind control. Case 3 with 90 degrees had the best energy performance, but the average indoor illuminance was 113lux, which is below the standards. Cases 4 and 5 showed higher levels of interior daylight illuminance with the average of 281lux and 403lux respectively. However, the fixed angles may have difficulties controlling excessive direct sunlight coming into the room and may cause glare. Cases 6 and 7 used sun tracking angle control and cut-off angle control, and the average interior illuminance was measured 250lux and 385lux respectively. Case 8 used the cut-off angle control in an hourly manner, satisfying the standard illuminance of 400lux with an average interior illuminance of 561lux. It was evaluated to be the best method to control direct solar radiation and to guarantee proper level of interior illumination.

  • The CCD camera is easily deteriorated by radiation, and an integrated camera using an image pickup tube is used in a high radiation area. We implemented a radiation camera system which is divided into a camera head using radiation-resistant electronic components and a remote control using weak radiation-resistant electronic components such as TR, IC, etc. According to the experimental results, the first damage of the electronic parts was IC for horizontal and vertical sync generation, and it was confirmed that if the radiation of $2{\times}10^5{\sim}10^6rad$ is accumulated, the normal function is lost. In addition, the signal transmission cable for remoteization has added an input/output buffer circuit and reduced the closed loop area of the shield and the cable to eliminate signal loss correction and noise. Therefore, it is expected that the maintenance cost will be greatly reduced and practical because only the camera head part can be used instead of replacing the entire system.

  • The measurement of the radiation energy, trunk temperature, leaf area index (LAI), air temperature, vapor pres-sure, and precipitation has been conducted under a mixed forest at Kwangneung Arboretum during the period of 2001. Characteristics of the diurnal and seasonal variation of the radiative energy were investigated. The aerodynamic roughness length was determined as about 1.6 m and the mean albedo was about 0.1 The downward short-wave radiation was linearly correlated with the net radiation and its correlation coefficient was about 0.96. From this linear relation, the heating coefficient was calculated and its annual mean value was about 0.21 The albedo and heating coefficient was varied with season, surface characteristics, and meteorological conditions. The diurnal and seasonal variations of radiation energy were discussed in terms of the surface characteristics and meteorological conditions. In the daytime, during clear skies, net radiation was dominated by the shortwave radiation. In presence of clouds and fog, the radiation energy was diminished. At night, the net radiation was entirely dominated due to the net longwave radiation. There was no distinct diurnal variation in net radiation flux during the overcast or rainy days. The net radiation was strongest in spring and weakest in winter. The seasonal development in leaf area was also reflected in a strong seasonal pattern of the radiation energy balance. The timing, duration, and maximum leaf area and trunk temperature were found to be an important control on radiation energy budget. The trunk temperature was either equal or warmer than air temperature during most of the growing season because the canopy could absorb a substantial amount of sunlight. After autumn (after the middle of October), the trunk temperature was consistently cooler than air temperature.
