  • This paper proposes an analysis method of performance degradation of antenna due to radio frequency interference between an antenna and adjacent noise sources using active scattering parameters. The radio frequency interference can be analyzed by the measured or simulated scattering parameters and by excited noise sources in the circuit as well. In this paper, a planar inverted-F antenna and a noise source are designed and fabricated to analyze radio frequency interference between the planar inverted-F antenna and noise source. The proposed analysis method uses active scattering parameters, of which verification is experimentally verified, and in simulation as well.

  • In this paper, a modeling and co-simulation methodology is proposed to predict the radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI) from on-chip switching I/O buffers. The output waveforms of I/O buffers are simulated including the on-chip I/O buffer circuit and the RC extracted on-chip interconnect netlist, package, and printed circuit board (PCB). In order to accurately estimate the EMI, a full-wave 3D simulation is performed including the measurement environment. The simulation results are compared with near-field electromagnetic scan results and far-field measurements from an anechoic chamber, and the sources of emission peaks were analyzed. For accurate far-field EMI simulation, PCB power trace models considering IC switching current paths and external power cable models must be considered for accurate EMI prediction. With the proposed EMI simulation model and flow, the electromagnetic compatibility can be tested even before the IC is fabricated.

  • Stiff and light fibre reinforced composites as used in air- and space-craft applications tend to high sound emission. Therefore, the damping properties are essential for the entire structural and acoustic engineering. Viscous damping is an established and reasonably linear model of the dissipation behaviour. Commonly, it is assumed to be isotropic and constant over all modes. For anisotropic materials it depends on the fibre orientation as well as the elastic and thermal material properties. To portray the orthogonal anisotropic behaviour, a model for unidirectional fibre reinforced plastics (frp) has been developed based on the classical laminate theory by ADAMS and BACON starting in 1973. Their approach includes three damping coefficients - for longitudinal damping in fibre direction, damping transversal to the fibres and shear based dissipation. The damping of a laminate is then accumulated layer wise including the anisotropic stiffness. So far, the model has been applied mainly to thermoset matrix materials. In this study, an experimental parameter estimation for different thermoplastic frp with angle ply and cross ply layups was carried out by measuring free vibrations of cantilever beams. The results show potential and limits of the ADAMS/BACON damping criterion. In addition, a possibility of modelling the anisotropic damping is shown. The implementation in standard FEA software is used to study the influence of boundary conditions on the damping properties and numerically estimate the radiated sound power of thin-walled frp parts.

  • R/V EARDO, commissioned in 1992, has successfully carried out ocean research campaigns in Korean jurisdictional and adjacent waters, including continental margins and coastal zones within the Korean Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), for 29 years. However, it will soon be reaching the end of its useful service life. A replacement for R/V EARDO is urgently needed to ensure the safety of vessel itself and its crews, and efficient ship operation and maintenance, as well as to meet modern scientific mission requirements (SMRs). Basic specifications for a replacement ship have been devised and reviewed over the past nine months. A test of the proposed hull form was also performed. The total tonnage of the proposed vessel is approximately 740 tons, and the overall length and width are 62.0 and 11.6 m, respectively. The new ship will thus be 73% larger than the current R/V EARDO; in particular, the research workspace will be 4.4 times larger. The major design priorities are the propulsion system, efficiency of radiated noise and vibration control, and the dynamic positioning system. An environmentally friendly emission system, meeting International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III regulations, will be installed in the third exhaust pipe. Various wet and dry lab spaces as well as 32 different scientific instruments have also been considered in the ship design.

  • Satellite generates a complex electromagnetic noise by conducted and radiated coupling effect of the various electrical instruments. This noise may cause serious problems on the satellite system. To minimize the electromagnetic coupling effects and maintain the system safety margin, system noise reduction technique should be applied from the beginning of the system design. The KOMPSAT-2 system is evaluated by measuring the conducted noise on system electrical power leads and verifying a 6dB system safety margin under the complex noise environment with current injection. This paper describes the KOMPSAT-2 system evaluation result performed on ETB(Electrical Test Bed) and the analysed noise element, the analysed result will be reflected on FM(Flight Model) EMC test.

  • In this paper, we investigated EMI(electromagnetic interference) reduction by conductor connection, which was used for fixing and electrical grounding between frames. Conductor connects two frames and then it provides the decrease of return path of signal current. To prove the effect of conductor, we measured/simulated the RE(radiated emission) with/without conductors between the two frames. From the measured/simulated results, we observed that EMI decreased about 1$\sim$10 dB at the frequency range of 30 MHz to 1 GHz. VNA(vector network analyzer) was used to measure the S parameters and the RE was measured in a 3 m anechoic chamber. The simulated and measured results are compared and discussed.

  • In this paper, the system level EMC radiated emission test results of KoDSat(Korea Demonstration Satellite), its affects upon the Launch vehicle and H/W improving methods regarding its over exceed value of EMC specification are discussed. Regarding its over exceed value, we estimated that DAU of KoDSat generated the exceeded EMC noise source, and these test results were analyzed using the EMC2000 tool to find out how did it affect the FTS(Flight Termination Subsystem) of KSLV-1(Korea Small Launch Vehicle). To diminish the EMC noise source of UHF(430.1Mhz) band level, we redesigned the DAU power board to be applied the various schemes for EMI noise reduction such as grounding, shielding and EMI filtering, and also verified these reworks to analyze its diminishing affects in UHF band level by means of performing the DAU box level EMC test and performing the second KoDSat's system level EMC test.

  • The characteristics of noise emission from tram systems should be investigated in order to design and construct an urban tram network that raises fewer environmental noise problems. In this paper, the characteristics of rolling noise from a tram were studied and a desired stiffness of the rail supports was proposed using a noise prediction model. The mobilities of embedded rails and resilient wheels were predicted using the Timoshenko beam model and the finite element model, respectively. The predicted mobilities were compared with the measured results. Compared with the measured values, the calculated noise level near the track showed small errors for frequencies higher than 300 Hz. Then, the source strengths of rail and wheel components were examined by varying the rail supporting stiffness and the slab supporting stiffness so that suitable stiffness values could be estimated that would reduce noise radiated from rails and wheels but that would not greatly increase the ground vibration.

  • This paper presents a high-frequency boost type ZVS-PWM chopper-fed DC-DC power converter with a single active auxiliary edge-resonant snubber at the load stage which can be designed for power conditioners such as solar photovoltaic generation, fuel cell generation, battery and super capacitor energy storages. Its principle operation in steady-state is described in addition to a prototype setup. The experimental results of boost type ZVS-PWM chopper proposed here, are evaluated and verified with a practical design model in terms of its switching voltage and current waveforms, the switching v-i trajectory and the temperature performance of IGBT module, the actual power conversion efficiency, and the EMI of radiated and conducted emissions, and then discussed and compared with the hard switching scheme from an experimental point of view. Finally, this paper proposes a practical method to suppress parasitic oscillation due to the active auxiliary resonant switch at ZCS turn-off mode transition with the aid of an additional lossless clamping diode loop, and can be reduced the EMI conducted emission.
