This study attempts to capture the low level carbon dioxide from indoor spaces using a granular activated carbon (WSC-470) which was modified with primary monoethanolamine. Adsorption capacity of the prepared adsorbents was evaluated for pure $CO_2$ flow and 3000 ppm as a function of MEA concentration and solvents such as distilled water, ethanol and methanol. The AC based adsorbents then were characterized in terms of pore structure by BET and chemical functionalities by XPS. While high concentration of MEA reduced specific surface area, porosity and micro pores, nitrogen content which can enhance the surface basicity was increased. The maximum adsorption capacity decreased comparing to the initial AC pellets, whilst the potential of selective adsorption amount at low level $CO_2$ was increased at 45% (0.73 mmol/g).

The stress concentration of lock-claws, which are one of the important parts for pneumatic fitting for a flexible tube connection, was investigated by finite element simulation. In this study, the generation of the local plastic deformation was predicted when the tube was hooked up to a pneumatic fitting in order to disperse the stress concentration, and design optimization was carried out using the Taguchi method. For the optimization, the outer width, bending angle, and inner radius of the lock-claws are used as main variables. As a result, their respective contribution ratios are revealed as 81.3%, 10.9%, and 1.5%. The ratio of the total stress distribution was improved by 4% compared with the initial design of the lock-claws.

Vav1 is a Rho/Rac guanine nucleotide exchange factor primarily expressed in hematopoietic cells. In this study, we investigated the potential role of Vav1 in osteoclast (OC) differentiation by comparing the ability of bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMCs) obtained from Vav1-deficient ($Vav1^{-/-}$) and wild-type (WT) mice to differentiate into mature OCs upon stimulation with macrophage colony stimulating factor and receptor activator of nuclear kappa B ligand in vitro. Our results suggested that Vav1 deficiency promoted the differentiation of BMMCs into OCs, as indicated by the increased expression of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase, cathepsin K, and calcitonin receptor. Therefore, Vav1 may play a negative role in OC differentiation. This hypothesis was supported by the observation of more OCs in the femurs of $Vav1^{-/-}$ mice than in WT mice. Furthermore, the bone status of $Vav1^{-/-}$ mice was analyzed in situ and the femurs of $Vav1^{-/-}$ mice appeared abnormal, with poor bone density and fewer number of trabeculae. In addition, Vav1-deficient OCs showed stronger adhesion to vitronectin, an ${\alpha}_v{\beta}_3$ integrin ligand important in bone resorption. Thus, Vav1 may inhibit OC differentiation and protect against bone resorption.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of Curcuma longa rhizoma extract in an experimental rat model of osteoarthritis. Methods: Osteoarthritis was induced in rats by injecting monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) into the knee joint cavity of rats. The rats were divided into 5 groups (Normal, Control, positive comparison, low (CL) and high (CH) concentration groups). Rats in the low concentration (CL) group had MIA-induced osteoarthritis; they were treated with Curcuma longa rhizoma extract at a dose of 50mg/kg body weight. Rats in the high concentration (CH) group had MIA-induced osteoarthritis; they were treated with Curcuma longa rhizoma extract at a dose of 100mg/kg body weight. Hind paw weight distribution and ROS levels were measured. At the end of all treatments, changes in alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatinine levels were analyzed. In addition, inflammatory protein levels were evaluated by western blot analysis. Results: In this study, hind paw weight distribution significantly improved in the CL and CH groups, while. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production significantly decreased in both. The levels of ALT, AST, BUN, and creatinine did not significantly change in either group. The production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase 4 (NOX4), $p47^{phox}$, and Ras-related C3 botulinum toxin substrate 1 (RAC1) decreased in both. Catalase, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) significantly increased in the CL and CH groups, respectively. Nuclear factor erythroid 2 (Nrf2) increased, but there were no significant differences between the experimental and control groups. Inflammatory cytokines, including nuclear factor-kappa Bp65 (NF-${\kappa}Bp65$), interleukin-1beta (IL-$1{\beta}$), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-${\alpha}$), decreased significantly in both the CL and CH groups. Conclusions: Our results showed that Curcuma longa rhizoma extract has anti-inflammatory effects. Anti-inflammatory activity is regulated by the inhibition of inflammatory cytokines and mediators, such as NF-${\kappa}B$, therefore, it suppresses cartilage damage as well.

It is realized that the extraterrestrial matter is in ionized state, plasma, so the matter of this kind behaves as not expected because of its sensitiveness to electric and magnetic fields and its ability to carry electric currents. This kind of subtle change can be observed by an instrument for the magnetic field measurement, the magnetometer usually mounted on the rocket and the satellite, and based on the ground observatory. The magnetometer is a useful instrument for the spacecraft attitude control and the Earth's magnetic field measurements for the scientific purpose. In this paper, we present the preliminary design and the test results of the two onboard magnetometers of KARl's (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) sounding rocket, KSRIII, which will be launched during the period of 2001-02. The KSR-III magnetometers consist of the fluxgate magnetometer, MAG/AIM (Attitude Information Magnetometer) for acquiring the rocket flight attitude information, and of the search-coil magnetometer, MAG/SIM (Scientific Investigation Magnetometer) for the observation of the Earth's magnetic field fluctuations. With the MAG/AIM, the 3-axis attitude information can be acquired by the comparison of the resulting dc magnetic vector fields with the IGRF (International Geomagnetic Reference Field). The Earth's magnetic field fluctuations ranging from 10 to 1,000 Hz can also be observed with the MAG/SIM measurement.
The effect of flooding and soil salinity on the growth of yam (Dioscorea batatas) were studied on the experimantal site temporally established in the south-eastern part of Saemangeum Reclaimed Tidal Land (near Gwanghwal myun, Gimjae-gun, Jellabukdo, Korea). Yam seedlings planted by using aerial bulblet as alternative of sliced tubers, were grown for 20-days and transplanted in black-vinyl mulched ridges (about 20 cm in height) at 70cm interval by $20{\times}60cm$ spacing in the $4^{th}$ of May, 2010. Soil salinity was maintained at lower than 1.2 ds $m^{-1}$ during the growing period and did not result to salt injury in all plants. However, flooding injury very seriously led to plant death and plant mortality rates at $67{\pm}21$ and $82{\pm}9%$ of yam plants in the compost and no compost treatment, respectively, died by heavy flooding during the rainy summer season. The main reasons of the flooding injury included the decreased rainfall acceptable capacity (RAC) after the rising of water table and a slowdown of water infiltration rate after the formation of an impermeable soil crust in the furrow bottom with continuous and heavy downpour during the rainy summer season. The effect of compost treatment was not statistically observed because of the severe spatial difference caused by wet injury, although yam tuber yield was higher at 30 kg $10^{-1}$ in the compost treatment than in the no-compost treatment at 20 kg $10^{-1}$. However, the size of tuber ranged at 1.23 to 1.60 cm in diameter and 3.7 to 5.0 cm in length in all both treatment, which means they are still reproducible for the next cropping season. Conclusively, proper counter-flooding measure and soil salinity control critically important for successful yam production in Saemangeum Reclaimed Tidal Land.
The prevalence of thermophilic Campylobacter (C.) spp. in stray, breeding, and household dogs was 25.2, 12.0, and 8.8%, respectively. C. jejuni and C. upsaliensis were the predominant Campylobacter spp. from household dogs. cdtA, cdtB, and cdtC were detected by PCR in all isolates. Despite the high cytolethal distending toxin (CDT) gene prevalence, only 26 (31%) C. jejuni strains and one (15.3%) C. coli strain showed evidence of CDT production in HEp-2 cell cytotoxicity assays. Virulence-associated genes detected in the C. jejuni and C. coli isolates were cadF, dnaJ, flaA, racR, ciaB, iamA, pldA, virB11, ceuE, and docC. cadF, dnaJ, flaA, and ceuE were found in all C. jejuni and C. coli isolates. When detecting Guillain-Barr$\acute{e}$ syndrome-associated genes (galE, cgtB, and wlaN), galE was identified in all isolates. However, cgtB and wlaN were more prevalent in C. jejuni isolates from humans than those from dogs. Adherence and invasion abilities of the C. jejuni and C. coli strains were tested in INT-407 cells. A considerable correlation (adjusted $R^2$= 0.678) existed between adherence and invasion activities of the Campylobacter spp. isolates.

Obesity is one of the most serious health problem because it induced numerous metabolic syndrome and increases the incidence of various disease, including diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, and cancer. In 3T3-L1 adipocytes, increases in reactive oxygens species (ROS) occur with lipid accumulation. NADPH oxidase, producing superoxide anion, may contribute to the development of obesity-associated insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. In this study, we elucidated the effect of Chaenomeles sinensis koehne extract (CSE) against the development of obesity and the inhibition mechanisms in 3T3-L1 preadiocytes. CSE decreased triglyceride content and inhibited the expression of adipogenic transcription factors including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor $(PPAR){\gamma}$, CCAT/enhancer binding protein $(C/EBP){\alpha}$ and sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP-1). In addition, CSE highly increased antioxidant activity in a dose-dependent manner. CSE remarkably reduced intracellular ROS increase and NAD(P)H oxidase activity, NOX1, NOX4, Rac1 protein expression, and phosphorylation of p47phox and p67phox We also studied the effect of CSE on weight gain induced by high-fat diet. The oral treatment of CSE (500 mg/kg, body weight) in diet-induced obese (DIO) mice showed decrease in triglyceride and adipocyte size. Therefore, these results indicate that the effect of CSE on anti-obese effects, adipocyte differentiation and reducing triglyceride contents as well as adipocyte size in obese mice, may be associated with inhibition of NAD(P)H oxidase-induced ROS production and adipose transcription factors. These results showed the potential to inhibit the obesity by CSE treatment through controlling the activation of NAD(P)H oxidase in vitro and in vivo obese model.
Dust explosion hazards are always present when combustible dusts are manufactured or handled in the process. However, industries is experiencing difficulty in establishing chemical accident prevention measures because of insufficiency of information on dust explosion characteristics of combustible dust handled in industry. In this study, we investigated experimentally dust explosion characteristics of two kinds of multi-walled carbon nano tubes (MWCNT) different in particle size distribution and examined classification of dust explosion hazardous area for MWCNT manufacturing or handling process by applying the NFPA 499 code. As a result, $P_{max}$, $K_{st}$, LEL, MIE and MIT of MWCNT 1 having $124.2{\mu}m$ median diameter are obtained 6.3 bar, $56bar{\cdot}m/s$, $125g/m^3$, over 1000 mJ, and over $650^{\circ}C$. $P_{max}$, $K_{st}$, LEL, MIE and MIT of MWCNT 2 having $293.5{\mu}m$ median diameter are 6.2 bar, $42bar{\cdot}m/s$, $100g/m^3$, over 1000 mJ, and over $650^{\circ}C$, respectively. MWCNT 1, 2 are not categorized as combustible dust listed in the NFPA 499 Code for classification of dust explosion hazardous area because explosion severity and ignition sensitivity of MWCNT 1, 2 are below 0.35 and 0.01, respectively.
This study examined extracts from five different kinds of lees and nuruk and their organic solvent fractions in terms of several biological functions, such as anti-adipogenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-proliferative activities. The anti-adipogenic activity was investigated by treating mouse pre-adipocyte 3T3-L1 cells with one extract (YE) and four organic solvent fractions (YAc, PAc, RAc, and WPAc) during adipogenesis. Among the treated samples, the ethyl acetate fraction of W-Ju lees (WPAc) showed the strongest anti-adipogenic effect, which was confirmed with oil red O staining and down-regulation of pro-adipogenic genes such as PPAR-gamma and SCD-1. Treatment with WPAc also reduced the expression of PPAR-gamma in a time-dependent manner. The effects of five different extracts were examined on nitric oxide (NO) production in mouse RAW 264.7 cells to determine anti-inflammatory activity. The ethyl acetate fraction of B-Ju lees (PAc) significantly decreased NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells and it also inhibited NO production in a dose-dependent manner. The PAc fraction also dramatically decreased the viability of human colorectal cancer HCT116 cells in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, PAc increased the expression of NAG-1 and ATF3 genes in a dose dependent manner. Overall, these results indicate that lees and nuruk have several biological functions, including anti-adipogenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-proliferative activities.
