  • The nonlinearity and high deformability of rubber make accurate analysis of the behavior of cord-rubber composites a challenging task. Some researchers have adopted the third phase between cord and rubber and have carried out three-phase modeling. However, it is difficult to determine the thickness and properties of the interface in cord-rubber composites. In this study, a two-dimensional finite-element method (2D FEM) is used to investigate the effective and normalized moduli of cord-rubber composites having interfaces of various thicknesses; this model takes into account the 2D generalized plane strain and a plane strain element. The neo-Hookean model is used for the properties of rubber, several interface properties are assumed and three loading directions are selected. It is found that the properties and thickness of the interface can affect the nonlinearity and the effective modulus of cord-rubber composites.

  • Non-ceramic composite insulator has been interested in the power industry because of its good characteristics in mechanical properties, mass product and design availability. Also it is lighter, and less unexplosive, compared to a ceramic insulator. Especially EPDM rubber composite insulator can be used for long-term in contaminated environments because of its hydrophobicity. This paper showed the rheological properties, the electrical properties, and contact angles to check the hydrophobicity and the recoverability of the EPDM compounds. Also, we investigated surface morphology of the compound by SEM.

  • This article examines the modification of surface properties of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) with nanoscale ceramic particles to fabricate an improved composite with butadiene-nitrile rubber (BNR). Adhesion force data showed that ceramic zeolite particles on the surface of UHMWPE modulated the surface state of the polymer and increased its compatibility with BNR. Atomic force microscopy phase images showed that UHMWPE made up the microphase around the zeolite particles and formed the evolving layer with a complex interface. The complex interface resulted in improvements in the mechanical properties of the composite, especially its low-temperature resistance coefficients, thereby improving its performance in low-temperature applications.

  • The dynamic properties of short-fiber reinforced Chloroprene rubber have been studied as functions of interphase conditions and fiber content. The loss factor generally decreased with fiber content and showed different patterns according to interphase conditions. The better interphase condition showed the lower loss modulus, $E_2$. Also, the dynamic ratio decreased with fiber content and rapidly decreased in the case of double coatings, i.e., model C. Therefore, the short-fiber reinforced rubber could have the better isolation in frequency ratio($\sqrt{2}$ min.) compared to frequency ratio($\sqrt{2}$ max.). And we have investigate the possibility of applying short-fiber reinforced rubber to automotive engine mount.

  • The impact strength and fracture behavior of rubber/polymer composites were investigated with respect to two factors: (i) characteristic ratio, $C_{\infty}$ as a measure of chain flexibility of the polymer matrix and (ii) the rubber particle size in polymer blend system. In this study C was controlled by the composition ratio of polyphenylene oxide (PPO) and polystyene (PS). Izod impact test and fractographic observation of the fracture surface using scanning electron microscope were conducted. Finite element analysis were carried out to gain understanding of plastic deformation mechanism (shear yielding and crazing) of these materials. Shear yielding was found to be enhanced when the flexibility of matrix polymer was relatively low and the rubber particles were small.

  • This study investigated microstructural changes of cured urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins mixed with aqueous rubber latex emulsion after intentional acid etching. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used in order to better understand a hydrolytic degradation process of cured UF resins responsible for the formaldehyde emission from wood-based composite panels. A liquid UF resin with a formaldehyde to urea (F/U) molar ratio 1.0 was mixed with a rubber latex emulsion at three different mixing mass ratios (UF resin to latex = 30:70, 50:50, and 70:30). The rate of curing of the liquid modified UF resins decreased with an increase of the rubber latex proportion as determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement. Ultrathin sections of modified and cured UF resin films were exposed to hydrochloric acid etching in order to mimic a certain hydrolytic degradation. TEM observation showed spherical particles and various cavities in the cured UF resins after the acid etching, indicating that the acid etching had hydrolytically degraded some part of the cured UF resin by acid hydrolysis, also showing spherical particles of cured UF resin dispersed in the latex matrix. These results suggested that spherical structures of cured UF resin might play an important role in hindering the hydrolysis degradation of cured UF resin.

  • Permeability to gases and vapors is an important function in tires, rubber tubes and diaphragms. It mainly depends on the rubber material. Generally, permeability increases in the following order: silicone rubber > NR > EPDM > SBR > NBR > FPM > ECO > IIR. And, for an elastomer permeability is also very much dependent on compounding. Many research works are reported in the area of gas permeability for formed rubber,$^{1-7}$ however, few studies are found for unformed elastomer products. Incorporation of nano-particles, use of thermoplastic elastomers and applying high barrier multilayer coatings are the main approaches to obtain a high barrier elastomeric product. In this paper, barrier article for vehicle is introduced.

  • This paper presents experimental and analytical studies to understand the behavior of crumb rubber concrete (CRC)-filled fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) and steel tube double skin column (DSC) and beam (DSB) members under cyclic loading. The main test variable was the percentage of rubber which ranged from 0 to 40%. For column members, different heights corresponding to different aspect ratios were examined to understand the to understand the effect of DSCs' slenderness on the cyclic response of the columns. the. The behavior of the specimens in terms of failure mode, strain development, energy dissipation, load-displacement response were presented and compared. The ability of the current provisions of the Australian codes to predict the capacity of such double skin members was also evaluated based on the test results. This study concluded that the reduction in the concrete strength was more severe at the material level compared to structural level. Also, as the load changed from axial compression in columns to pure moment in beams the negative effect of rubber percentage on the strength became less significant.

  • This paper describes effect of the bending strain of FRP tube for composite bushing with winding tension. The composite bushing can be formed, by adding silicone rubber sheds to a tube of composite materials. The FRP tube is internal insulating part of a composite bushing and is designed to ensure the mechanical characteristics. Generally the properties of FRP tube can be influenced by the winding angle, wall thickness and winding tension. As winding tension is increased glass contents was increased in the range of 70.4~76.6%. In the bending test, winding tension is increased residual displacement was decreased in the range of 14.0~12.2 mm.
