People spend the majority of their time in indoor environments. Maintaining adequate indoor temperature and humidity is necessary to support health and improve quality of life. However, people with low incomes can be vulnerable because they may not be able to use effective cooling and heating systems in their homes. In this study, the indoor temperature and humidity in low-income residences over a year in Seoul, Korea was characterized. Indoor temperature and humidity were measured in three types of homes (12 rooftop residences, 16 basement residences, and 18 public rental apartments) occupied by low-income residents. Both differed significantly among the three types of residence, particularly during the summer and winter seasons. A regression model between indoor and outdoor temperature detected a heating threshold at $3.9^{\circ}C$ for rooftop residences, $9.9^{\circ}C$ for basement residences, and $17.1^{\circ}C$ for public rental apartments. During tropical nights and cold-wave advisory days, rooftop residences showed the most extreme indoor temperatures. This study demonstrates that people living in rooftop residences could be at risk from extreme hot and cold conditions.
Odor dispersion around a cubic building from rooftop odor emissions was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The Shear Stress Transport (here after SST) $k-{\omega}$ model in FLUENT CFD code was used to simulate the flow and odor dispersion around a cubic building. The CFD simulations were performed for three different configurations of cubic buildings comprised of one building, two buildings or three buildings. Five test emission rates were assumed as 1000 OU/s, 2000 OU/s, 3000 OU/s, 4000 OU/s and 5000 OU/s, respectively. Experimental data from wind tunnels obtained by previous studies are used to validate the numerical result of an isolated cubic building. The simulated flow and concentration results of neutral stability condition were compared with the wind tunnel experiments. The profile of streamline velocity and concentration simulation results show a reasonable level of agreement with wind tunnel data. In case of a two-building configuration, the result of emission rate 1000 OU/s illustrates the same plume behavior as a one-building configuration. However, the plume tends to the cover rooftop surface and windward facet of a downstream building as the emission rate increases. In case of a three-building configuration, low emission rates (<4000 OU/s) form a similar plume zone to that of a two-building configuration. However, the addition of a third building, with an emission rate of 5000 OU/s, creates a much greater odorous plume zone on the surface of second building in comparison with a two-building configuration.
The objective of this study is to analysis the properties for reclassifying green roofs into three types by cluster analysis after investigating the present condition in thirty green roofs which were created from 2002 to 2004 by Seoul Metropolitan Government. The previous classification was resulted in structure safety diagnosis in the type of green roofs and visible judgment by experts in sites. However, it should have been corrected. Therefore, it needed a reestablished concept and a reclassification in green roofs. The results of this study are as follows : the concept of a rooftop garden and a green roof is different from previous studies. The rooftop gardens named by intensive green roofs are closed to integrated management, whereas the green roofs are closed to low management. The reclassification of green type was also conducted to use the statistic analysis of categorical regression by previous studies, and the factors extracted by the categorical regression were influenced by greening type. The figure of R-square representing explanation in regression analysis is 95.2%. As this result was analyzed, it was proved into rooftop gardens demanded for high activity by people.
Rooftop greening is the alternative of urban heat island. The purpose of this study is selecting Sedum to the effect of temperature reduction of the rooftop greening. Since the state of growth is excellent, Sedum kamtschaticum, Sedum takesimense and Sedum middendorffianum surveyed as coverage. It was investigated that there is the effect of reducing the temperature. The effect of temperature reduction of Sedum counted compound was found to be associated with state of growth. When you construct a rooftop greening, planting Sedum kamtschaticum, Sedum takesimense and Sedum middendorffianum is helpful to the effect of temperature reduction. Also, the ingredients various types of Sedum in order to reduce the effective temperature, it must be densified. It must demonstrate an additional effect of temperature reduction of Sedum through complementary and continuous monitoring of the future temperature monitoring method.
The objective of this study is to the integrated evaluation of the present condition and satisfaction of visitors of rooftop greening area using quantitative and qualitative method. The thirteen green roofs were selected to investigate environmental variables as like building structure, soil, water, atmosphere and climate environment and questionnaire survey for investigate the satisfaction of visitors was conducted. The results of this study are as follows : remove of the hazardous inflow of species, install rain water recycling facility, install outdoor unit of air condition where not to affect plants in green roof, install safety facilities in the case of making resting place, plant variable vegetation and so on. The result of questionnaire survey are that visitors want to make more comfortable resting space. The more bigger the resting space and privacy, the more satisfaction of visitor became high. In conclusion, green roofs implementation should be considered reduction of temperature and delay of runoff, insulation effect and ecological restoration as well as rooftop greening is focused on the development of resting space nowadays.
The purpose of this study is to select the appropriate wild herbaceous plants on the rooftop. For the purpose of the experiments, 14 wild herbaceous plants were chosen. As the results of the experiments, the wild herbaceous plants growing on the culture soil(perlite) Among the 14 kinds of wild herbaceous plants, such as Chrysanthemum boreale, Taraxacum mongolicum, Aster Koraiensis, Aster yomena, Oenothera odorata, Oenothera lamarckiana, Patrinia scabiosaefolia showed good effects on growth of above ground parts. Therefore, these plants will effective for the rooftop revegetation. Callistephus chinensis and Lotus corniculatus var. Japonicus showed good height growth, wherase covering rate was worst. Chrysanthemum boreale, Platycodon grandiflorum, Patrinia scabiosaefolia were plant height, wherase covering rate was not good . For the expected number of seedings more than 3,000 per square meter, many seedings got withered to death while the survivors were suppressed to grow slow in the early stage due to the densityproblem.

We propose maximum power extraction from a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) array during partial shading conditions. Partial shading is unavoidable during power extraction from rooftop PV systems due to nearby tall buildings (construction of additional floors) and trees (growth of trees). Many reconfiguration techniques can be used to extract maximum power in partial shading conditions, but in several cases, the real maximum power output is not achieved. In this study, a new switched PV technique is proposed to enhance the power output. The proposed technique is simple to use and more cost effective than other reconfiguration techniques. Therefore, it is suitable for rooftop applications. The power output of the proposed technique is compared with that of existing techniques with similar shading patterns. Eight panels with ratings of 250 watts (2 kW) each are used for testing. MATLAB simulation and hardware verification are done for the proposed and existing techniques. The proposed technique is implemented on a $4{\times}2$ PV array, although it can be extended to a number of arrays.
The objective of this study were to assess rooftop urban agriculture and analyze the differences in soil, growth, physiology, and productivity to elucidate the effect of companion planting with various plants, including lettuce (Lactuca sativa), rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus), marigold (Tagetes patula), Korean perilla (Perilla frutescens), and garlic chives (Allium senescens). Measurements were taken every other week from May to August 2023, totaling eight measurement. Regarding the characteristics of the soil planted with lettuce and aromatic plants, the combined planting of lettuce and garlic chives created a favorable soil environment for plant growth. Consequently, the best growth was observed when lettuce and garlic chives were companion planted. Companion planting of lettuce and garlic chives appears to be the most efficient concerning growth and physiology. The productivity of companion planting lettuce and aromatic plants also showed high-quality lettuce when lettuces and garlic chives were companion planted. Therefore, companion planting of lettuces and garlic chives in rooftop urban agriculture is suitable for growth, physiology, and productivity.
The purpose of this study is to provide the fundamental material and information for the plant maintenance after rooftop planting through physiochemical characteristics. The characteristics of artificial soils after rooftop planting from 1993 to 1999 was investigated. Fourteen investigation areas were selected from 4 cities(2 areas selected by each year). The analysis of the circumstances of the areas, the physical characteristics, and the chemical characteristics of the soil were conducted. The artificial soil pH ranged 5.26∼7.40 showing that after construction the soil pH tended to decrease. The soil bulk density of the site was lowest in 1999, 0.15g/㎤, and used to increase toward 1993. We found the fact that the soil bulk density increased gradually after rooftop application . The coefficients of permeability of the soils range from 0.016 to 0.052 cm/sec, which seemed to be in good permeability level. The artificial soils had relatively high water moisture capacity of 62.69∼71.36%. The soil organic matter content of the artificial soils ranged from 0.43 to 1.34%. The exchangeable caution concentration in the artificial soil ranged, Na, 2.36∼4.71mg·{TEX}$kg^{-1}${/TEX}, Mg 0.88∼2.84mg·{TEX}$kg^{-1}${/TEX},K 2.97∼9.61 mg·{TEX}$kg^{-1}${/TEX}, and Ca 9.39∼28.23 mg·{TEX}$kg^{-1}${/TEX}. The amount of total N ranged from 0.003 to 0.286% in study sites. Soil chemical properties varied year to year and showed little tend. The research results showed that some characteristics of the artificial soil were changed after rooftop planting, i.e., soil pH and soil bulk density. Soil bulk density had a negative relationship with the coefficient of permeability, showing that the drainage condition might be limited after some period. This study suggests that a diversity of the research in the changes of the plant growth basis on the areas after construction.
Urban agriculture, which can be defined as agriculture performed in a city, is suggested as an alternative solution to restore deserted community and expand green land in city area through cultivation activities. In Korea, 'Urban Agriculture Promotion and Support Act' was enforced from May 2012. In addition, in the same year, Seoul Metropolitan Government declared 'the beginning of urban agriculture era,' established municipal ordinance, and increased budget to actively support urban agriculture. As a result, urban agriculture practices have been increasing every year. Yet, the way of developing urban agriculture in a uniform way of expanding green land has led to difficulties of securing proper spaces. Accordingly, 'roof top' spaces have gained attention. This study analyzes rooftop garden, one of the spaces of carrying out urban agriculture, from the publicness perspective. The study selected a case study of a public rooftop garden in Mullae-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, investigated present conditions and usage features of the garden, and explored the conditions to be a 'public' roof top garden. Through theoretical analysis, both physical and non-physical indicators were derived for analysis framework; physical aspects- accessibility, locality, openness, comfortness, and non-physical aspects- subjectivity, cooperativeness, and a sense of community. The results of this study are as follows. First, openness and locality scores were the highest, and comfortness scored the lowest, in ensuring the publicness of Mullae roof top garden. Second, non-physical indicators had stronger effect than physical indicators on rooftop garden users' awareness on publicness and building a garden community. In conclusion, in order to vitalize roof top garden, users should be engaged from the very first planning stage of building a garden, opening hours should not be limited, and more importance should be put on users to subjectively manage the operation of rooftop garden than merely creating a physical environment.
