  • It is widely accepted that the reading mechanism of Super-RENS(super-resolution near field structure) and Super-ROM(super-resolution read only memory) is closely related with non-linear temperature dependent material properties such as refractive indices, phase change. Furthermore, the dynamic change of the temperature distribution also an essential part of reading mechanism of Super-RENS/ROM. Therefore, the knowledge of the temperature distribution as a function a time is one of the important keys to reveal the physics of reading mechanism in Super-RENS/ROM. We calculated time-dependent temperature distribution in a 3-dimensional Super-ROM disk structure when moving laser beam is irradiated. With a help of commercial software FEMLAB which employed finite element method, we simulated the temperature distribution of ROM structure whose pit diameter is 120-nm with 50-nm depth. Energy absorption by moving laser irradiation, time variations of heat transfer processes, heat fluxes, heat transfer ratios, and temperature distributions of the complicate 3-dimensional ROM structure have been obtained.

  • A new ROM compression method for continuous data is proposed. The ROM compression method is based on two proposed ROM compression algorithms. The first one is a region select ROM compression algorithm that stores only regions including data after dividing data into many small regions by magnitude and address. The second is a quantization ROM and error ROM compression algorithm that divides data into quantized data and their errors. Using these algorithms, 40~60% ROM size reductions aye achieved for various continuous data.

  • In the digital system, ROM has a large power-consumption and a speed-bottleneck. According to gradual growth of system speed, ROM is demanded to have low-power consumption and high-speed operation design. The ROM adapted in FFT or FIR filter needs method of sequential accessed addressing. We proposed a reduction method for the number of storage cells in this paper. The number of storage cells which is connected with bi-line is reduced by the proposed method so that the capacitance value of bit-time is reduced. In this case, delay time, and power consumption are reduced. Design result of ROM in this paper using the proposed method could reduce up to 86.3% of storage cell '1' compare with conventional method.

  • This paper describes a low power ROM using single charge-sharing capacitor and hierarchical bit line (SCSC-ROM). The SCSC-ROM reduces the power consumption in bit lines. It lowers the swing voltage of bit lines to a very small voltage by using a charge-sharing technique with a single capacitor. It implements the capacitor with dummy bit lines to improve noise immunity and make easy to design. The hierarchical bit line further saves the power by reducing the capacitance in bit lines. The SCSC-ROM also reduces the power consumption in control unit and predecoder by using the hierarchical word line decoder. The simulation result shows that the SCSC-ROM with $4K{\times}32bits$consumes only 37% power of a conventional ROM. A SCSC-ROM chip is fabricated in a $0.25{\mu}m$ CMOS process. It consumes 8.2mW at 240MHz with 2.5V.

  • In a memory, most power is dissipated in high capacitive lines such as predecoder lines, word lines, and bit lines. To reduce the power dissipation in these high capacitive lines, this paper proposes three techniques using charge recycling and charge sharing. One is the charge recycling predecoder (CRPD). The second one is the charge recycling word line decoder (CRWD). The last one is the charge sharing bit line (CSBL) for a ROM. The CRPD and the CRWD recycle the previously used charge in predecoder lines and word lines. Theoretically, the power consumption in predecoder lines and word lines are reduced to a half. The CSBL reduces the swing voltage in the ROM bit lines to very small voltage using a charge sharing technique. the CSBL can significantly reduce the power dissipation in ROM bit lines. The CRPD, the CRWD, and the CSBL consume 82%, 72%, and 64% of the power of previous ROM designs respectively. A charge recycling and charge sharing ROM (CRCS-ROM) with the CRPD, the CRWD, and the CSBL is implemented. A CRCS-ROM with 8K16bits was fabricated in a 0.3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ CMOS process. The CRCS-ROM consumes 8.63㎽ at 100MHz with 3.3V. The chip core area is 0.1 $\textrm{mm}^2$.

  • A new direct digital frequency synthesizer (DDFS) is proposed. The DDFS uses a new ROM compression method that divides each ROM in the conventional DDFS into two ROMs (a quantization ROM and an error ROM). The total size of the ROMs in the proposed DDFS is significantly reduced compared to the original ROM. The ROM compression ratio of 78 is achieved for a DDFS with 12bit output data. A DDFS with 12bit output data for sine function was implemented in a 0.35${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ CMOS technology. The power dissipation is 9.56㎽ at 100MHz with 3.3V and the maximum operating clock frequency is 330MHz.

  • A new low power charge-recycling ROM architecture is proposed. The charge-recycling ROM uses charge-recycling method in bit lines of ROM to save the power consumption. About 90% of the total power used in the ROM is consumed in bit lines. With the proposed method, power consumption in ROM bit lines can be reduced asymptotically to zero if the number of bit lines is infinite and the sense amplifiers detect infinitely small voltage difference. However, the real sense amplifiers cannot sense very small voltage difference. Therefore, reduction of power consumption is limited. The simulation results show that the charge-recycling ROM only consumes 13% ~ 78% of the conventional low power contact programming mask ROM.

  • This paper presents vibration control of a CD-ROM(compact disc-read only memory) drive feeding system consisting of a new type of CD-ROM mount using an electro-rheologocal(ER) fluid. Chemically treated starch particles and silicon oil are used for EF fluid, and its field-dependent yield stresses are experimentally distilled under both the shear and the flow modes. On the basis of the yield stress, an appropriate size of ER CD-ROM mount adapted to conventional feeding system is designed and manufactured. Vibration isolation performance of the proposed mount is evaluated in the frequency domain and compared with that of conventional rubber mount. The ER CD-ROM mount is then installed to the drive feeding system and the system equation of motion is derived. The skyhook controller is then incorporated with the fuzzy technique to improve the performance of ER CD-ROM mount. A set of fuzzy parameters and control rules are obtained from a relation between vertical displacement and pitching motion of the feedng system. Followingthe formulation of the fuzzy-skyhook controller, computer simulation is undertaken in order to evaluate vibration suppression of the CD-ROM drive feeding system subjected to various excitations.
