RGB-LED-based Optical Camera Communication using Multilevel Variable Pulse Position Modulation for Healthcare Applications

  • In this paper, a 32-variable pulse position modulation (32-VPPM) scheme is proposed to support a red-green-blue light-emitting-diode (RGB-LED)-based optical camera communication (OCC) system. Our proposed modulation scheme is designed to enhance the OCC data transmission rate, which is targeted for the wearable biomedical data monitoring system. The OCC technology has been utilized as an alternative solution to the radio frequency (RF) wireless system for long-term self-healthcare monitoring. Different biomedical signals, such as electrocardiograms, photoplethysmograms, and respiration signals are being monitored and transmitted wirelessly from the wearable biomedical device to the smartphone receiver. A common 30 frames per second (fps) smartphone camera with a CMOS image sensor is used to record a transmitted optical signal. Moreover, the overall proposed system architecture, modulation scheme, and data demodulation are discussed in this paper. The experimental result shows that the proposed system is able to achieve > 9 kbps using only a common smartphone camera receiver.

  • This paper presents a 13.56 MHz RFID reader that can be used as a door-lock system for smart home security. The RFID reader consists of a transmitter, a receiver, and a data processing block. To verify the operation of the developed RFID reader, we present both a PSPICE simulation for transmitter/receiver and a digital simulation for data processing block. In particular, a CRC block for error detection of received data and a Manchester decoding block for position detection of collided data are designed using VHDL. In addition, we applied a binary search algorithm for multi-tag anti-collision. The anti-collision procedure is carried out by PIC microcontroller on software. The experimental results show that the developed reader can provide the right multi-tag recognition.

  • The direct conversion method is classified into the structure using the mixing technology and six-port scheme. In the view point of complexity and integration the direct conversion method using the six-port scheme is superior to that with mixing technology. Expecially, the six-port direct conversion technology provides the low power consumption and the broad-band characteristic. In this paper, the six-port direct conversion receiver with the branch-line coupler and the ring hybrid coupler is designed respectively. The performances of the designed six-port schemes are analyzed and the six-port scheme with superior performance characteristics is proposed.

Analysis of Tip/Tilt Compensation of Beam Wandering for Space Laser Communication

  • Laser communication has been considered as a novel method for earth observation satellites with generation of high data volume. It offers faster data transmission speeds compared to conventional radio frequency (RF) communication due to the short wavelength and narrow beam divergence. However, laser beams are refracted due to atmospheric turbulence between the ground and the satellite. Refracted laser beams, upon reaching the receiver, result in angle-of-arrival (AoA) fluctuation, inducing image dancing and wavefront distortion. These phenomena hinder signal acquisition and lead to signal loss in the course of laser communication. So, precise alignment between the transmitter and receiver is essential to guarantee effective and reliable laser communication, which is achieved by pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT) system. In this study, we simulate the effectiveness of tip/tilt compensation for more efficient laser communication in the satellite-ground downlink. By compensating for low-order terms using tip/tilt mirror, we verify the alleviation of AoA fluctuations under both weak and strong atmospheric turbulence conditions. And the performance of tip/tilt correction is analyzed in terms of the AoA fluctuation and collected power on the detector.

  • The techniques of intelligent interference cancellation are used for achieving the improvement of deterioration, which is arisen to the interoperable terminal(GSM and DVB-H). In this paper, we propose a novel system that improve the DVB-H received performance by using the method of an adaptive interference canceller for GSM900 and DVB-H terminal. The interference for the collocated GSM900 and DVB-H receiver is cancelled by using the adaptive canceller with the low-noise ADC(Analog to Digital Converter) in the RF stage.

  • In this paper, Ka-band transceiver for road watch radar system is designed and fabricated. The transceiver for road watch radar system is composed of waveform generator, frequency generator. IF transceiver and RF up/down converter. The transceiver especially has 3 different waveform mode for target detection range. The transceiver had over 150 MHz bandwidth in Ka-band and 22 dBm output power. The receiver gain and noise figure was 30 dB and 4 dB respectively. The receive dynamic range was 65.28dB and amplitude imbalance and phase imbalance of I/Q channel was 0.3 dB and 1.8 degree respectively. The transceiver meets the required electrical performances through the individual tests.

  • This paper presents about an implementation of Video Transmitting and Receiving System(VTRS) for acquiring test data. The VTRS consists of two parts. The first is Transmitter Unit(TU) that is installed on a missile to acquire various kinds of data and transmit the data to the ground through RF signals. The second is Receiver Unit(RU) that receives the transmitted RF signals and reconstruct those to the original data. To gather a high speed data reliably and securely on the ground, the TU is designed by considering data transfer scheme, data compression, modulation method, encryption technic, link budget, and antenna radiation pattern. Further, a placement method of multiple receiving stations is suggested. The VTRS has been tested on a field to check the link margins and maximum receiving distance in a real environment. Finally, the VTRS is applied to a missile flight test and gathered high speed data reliably.

  • This paper describes a novel power management circuitry for reducing the sleeping mode power dissipation. Based on the proposed power management circuitry, the sensor module can be activated by RF wake-up signal, perform designated process and deactivate itself. There is absolutely no power dissipation at the sleeping mode which takes almost time of the operation. The temperature sensor module using solar cell as energy source has been fabricated and tested. Experimental results show that the sensor module with 3300 ${\mu}$F for storage capacitor can transmits RF temperature data to a receiver at a distance of 20 m every 15 second in a normal indoor light condition and keep the capacitor voltage over 9 V. And the sensor module can operate 100 times with a single charging, that means it is possible for the sensor module to transmit every 5 minute for 8 hours without light or any other power input during the night time.

  • A 900-MHz band transceiver has been developed for RFID reader applications. In the transmitter, a GaAs SPST switch is used for high speed switching and low power consumption. In the receiver, a double balanced mixer is used to compress even-harmonic products. The ASK demodulator which consists of an active filter and comparator is used to reject the unwanted in band interferers. The transceiver produces a maximum transmitting power of 30 dBm and exhibits an 5 m communication range with a 6-dBi gain antenna.

  • In this paper, we propose the PLL system of the local oscillator system for the millimeter wave band's radio astronomy receiving system. The development of the proposed local oscillator system based on the YIG oscillator VCO with 26.5 ${\sim}$ 40GHz specification. This system consists of the oscillator part including the YIG VCO, the harmonic mixer, and the isolator, the RF processing part including the triplexer, limiter, and RF discrimination processor. and the PLL system including YIG modulator and controller. Based on this configuration. we verify the frequency and power stability of the developed local oscillator system according to some temperature variation. From this test results we confirm the stable output frequency and power characteristic performance of the developed La system at constant temperature.
