In this paper, the high efficiency Doherty power amplifier using adaptive bias technique has been designed and realized for 2.3GHz Wibro applications. The RF performances of the Doherty power amplifier using adaptive bias technique have been compared with those of a class AB amplifier alone, and conventional Doherty amplifier. The Maximum PAE of designed Doherty power amplifier with adaptive bias technique has been 36.6% at 34.0dBm output power. The proposed Doherty power amplifier showed an improvement 1dB at output power and 7.6% PAE than a class AB amplifier alone.
Previous studies have selected wireless power transmission system using 2.45 GHz of ISM band, but the researches for 5.8 GHz microwave wireless power transmission have been relatively rare. The 5.8 GHz has some advantages compared with 2.45 GHz. Those are smaller antenna and smaller integrated system for RFIC. In this paper, the 5.8 GHz wireless power transmission system was developed and transmission efficiency was measured according to the distance. A transmitter sent the amplified microwaves through an antenna amplified by a power amplifier of 1W for 5.8 GHz, and a receiver was converted to DC from RF through a RF-DC Converter. In the 1W 5.8GHz wireless power transmission system, the converted currents and voltages were measured to evaluate transmission efficiency at each distance where LED lights up to 1m. The RF-DC Converter is designed and fabricated by impedance matching using full-wave rectifier circuit. The transmission-efficiency of the system shows from 1.05% at 0cm to 0.095% at 100cm by distance.

This paper has proposed a 920 MHz RF front-end for IEEE 802.15.4g SUN (Smart Utility Network) systems. The proposed 920 MHz RF front-end consists of a driver amplifier, a low noise amplifier, and a RF switch. In the TX mode, the driver amplifier has been designed as a single-ended topology to remove a transformer which causes a loss of the output power from the driver amplifier. In addition, a RF switch is located in the RX path not the TX path. In the RX mode, the proposed low noise amplifier can provide a differential output signal when a single-ended input signal has been applied to. A LC resonant circuit is used as both a load of the drive amplifier and a input matching circuit of the low noise amplifier, reducing the chip area. The proposed 920 MHz RF Front-end has been implemented in a 0.18-um CMOS technology. It consumes 3.6 mA in driver amplifier and 3.1 mA in low noise amplifier from a 1.8 V supply voltage.
This paper presents a 900 MHz zero-IF RF transceiver for IEEE 802.15.4g Smart Utility Networks OFDM systems. The proposed RF transceiver comprises an RF front end, a Tx baseband analog circuit, an Rx baseband analog circuit, and a ${\Delta}{\Sigma}$ fractional-N frequency synthesizer. In the RF front end, re-use of a matching network reduces the chip size of the RF transceiver. Since a T/Rx switch is implemented only at the input of the low noise amplifier, the driver amplifier can deliver its output power to an antenna without any signal loss; thus, leading to a low dc power consumption. The proposed current-driven passive mixer in Rx and voltage-mode passive mixer in Tx can mitigate the IQ crosstalk problem, while maintaining 50% duty-cycle in local oscillator clocks. The overall Rx-baseband circuits can provide a voltage gain of 70 dB with a 1 dB gain control step. The proposed RF transceiver is implemented in a $0.18{\mu}$ CMOS technology and consumes 37 mA in Tx mode and 38 mA in Rx mode from a 1.8 V supply voltage. The fabricated chip shows a Tx average power of -2 dBm, a sensitivity level of -103 dBm at 100 Kbps with PER < 1%, an Rx input $P_{1dB}$ of -11 dBm, and an Rx input IP3 of -2.3 dBm.

In this paper, we suggest a scheme to develop an efficient discrete nonlinear model based on polynomial structure for a RF power amplifier(PA). We describe a procedure to extract a discrete nonlinear model such as Taylor series or memory polynomial by sampling the input and output signal of RF PA. The performance of the model is analyzed varying the model parameters such as sample rate, nonlinear order, and memory depth. The results show that the relative error of the model is converged if the parameters are larger than specific values. We suggest an efficient modeling scheme considering complexity of the discrete model depending on the values of the model parameters. Modeling efficiency index(MEI) is defined, and it is used to extract optimum values for the model parameters. The suggested scheme is applied to discrete modeling of various RF PAs with various input signals such as WCDMA, WiBro, etc. The suggested scheme can be applied to the efficient design of digital predistorter for the wideband transmitter.

In this paper, a current - mode class D(CMCD) power amplifier over 70 % power added efficiency at 900 ㎒ is designed and implemented. Based on push-pull class B structure, main power loss due to charge and discharge of output capacitance in switching mode power amplifier is minimized by applying a parallel harmonic control circuit. Experimental CMCD amplifier with 73 % power added efficiency at 3.2 W and 72 % power added efficiency at 5 W are achieved respectively. In addition a characteristic of switching mode power amplifier whose output power is proportional to magnitude of U power is verified.

We present a novel schematic using a 3-dB coupler to transmit radiofrequency (RF) power to two receivers selectively. Whereas previous multiple receiver supporting schemes used hardware-switched methods, our scheme uses a soft power-allocating method, which has the advantage of variable power allocation in real time to each receiver. Using our scheme, we can split the charging area and focus the RF power on the targeted areas. We present our soft power-allocating method in three main points. First, we propose a new power distribution hardware structure using a FPGA (field-programmable gate array) and a 3-dB coupler. It can reconfigure the transmitting power to two receivers selectively using accurate FPGA-controlled signals with the aid of software. Second, we propose a power control method in our platform. We can variably control the total power of transmitter using the DC bias of the drain input of the amplifier. Third, we provide the possibility of expansion in multiple systems by extending these two wireless power transfer systems. We believe that this method is a new approach to controlling power amplifier output softly to support multiple receivers.

This paper presents a direct-conversion I/Q up-mixer block, which supports $3{\sim}5$ GHz ultra-wideband(UWB) applications. It consists of a VI converter, a double-balanced mixer, a RF amplifier, and a differential-to-single signal converter. To achieve wideband characteristics over $3{\sim}5$ GHz frequency range, the double-balanced mixer adopts a shunt-peaking load. The proposed RF amplifier can suppress unwanted common-mode input signals with high linearity. The proposed direct-conversion I/Q up-mixer block is implemented using $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The measured results for three channels show a power gain of $-2{\sim}-9$ dB with a gain flatness of 1dB, a maximum output power level of $-7{\sim}-14.5$ dBm, and a output return loss of more than - 8.8 dB. The current consumption of the fabricated chip is 25.2 mA from a 1.8 V power supply.

In this paper, a novel Class-E power amplifier using metamaterials has been realized with one RF LDMOS diffusion metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor. The CRLH structure can lead to metamaterial transmission line with the Class-E power amplifier tuning capability. The CRLH TL is achieved by the frequency offset and the nonlinear phase slope of the CRLH TL for the matching network of the power amplifier. Also, the proposed power amplifier has been realized by using the CRLH structure in the output matching network for better efficiency. Operating frequencies are chosen at 13.56 MHz in this work. The measured results show that the output power of 39.83 dBm and the gain of 11.83dB was obtained. At this point, we have obtained the power-added efficiency (PAE) of 73 % at operation frequency.

This paper presents a novel linearization scheme for a nonlinear RF amplifier It is based on the amplitude modulation with envelope signal. The 3rd order distortion generator is composed of two FETs and it adopts a balanced structure for the purpose of main carrier cancellation. The amplitude and phase of the IM3 component can be controlled at RF band. This predistorter is implemented and tested at the KOREA PCS Tx. band (1840∼1870MHz). Experimental results of two-tone test show that the IM3 cancellation is achieved about 30-40 ㏈ for the wide dynamic range. The adjacent channel power ratio is improved by over 10 ㏈ at the broad-band CDMA signal with a peak to average power ratio of l0㏈, and this improvement is maintained through a wide range of output power levels.
