  • The voltage-controlled oscillator is one of the fundamental building blocks that determine the signal quality and power consumption in RF transceivers for wireless sensor networks. Ring oscillators are attractive owing to their small form factor and multi-phase capability despite the relatively poor phase noise performance in comparison with LC oscillators. The phase noise of a ring oscillator can be improved by using a coupled structure that works at a lower frequency. This paper introduces a 2.4 GHz low-noise ring oscillator that consists of two 3-stage coupled ring oscillators. Each sub-oscillator operates at 800 MHz, and the multi-phase signals are combined to generate a 2.4 GHz quadrature output. The voltage-controlled ring oscillator designed in a 65-nm standard CMOS technology has a tuning range of 800 MHz and exhibits the phase noise of -104 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset. The power consumption is 13.3 mW from a 1.2 V supply voltage.

  • This paper proposes two types of subharmonic RF receiver front-end (called LMV) where, in a single stage, quadrature voltage-controlled oscillator (QVCO) is stacked on top of a low noise amplifier. Since the QVCO itself plays the role of the single-balanced subharmonic mixer with the dc current reuse technique by stacking, the proposed topology can remove the RF mixer component in the RF front-end and thus reduce the chip size and the power consumption. Another advantage of the proposed topologies is that many challenges of the direct conversion receiver can be easily evaded with the subharmonic mixing in the QVCO itself. The intermediate frequency signal can be directly extracted at the center taps of the two inductors of the QVCO. Using a 65 nm complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, the proposed subharmonic RF front-ends are designed. Oscillating at around 2.4 GHz band, the proposed subharmonic LMVs are compared in terms of phase noise, voltage conversion gain and double sideband noise figure. The subharmonic LMVs consume about 330 ㎼ dc power from a 1-V supply.

  • We sputtered $TiN_x$ (titanium nitride) thin films on silicon substrates using ultra high vacuum RF magnetron sputtering method, and measured spectra of ellipsometry angles ${\Delta}$ and ${\Psi}$ in the photon-energy range of 1.5-5.0 eV using a variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometer. The optical constants, refractive index and extinction coefficient of the $TiN_x$ films were determined via the dispersion parameters extracted from the curve-fitting process based on Drude+Lorentz oscillator dispersion function. The reliability of determined optical constants were verified through the comparison of between simulated reflectance and reflectance spectra measured using a spectrophotometer.

  • This paper describes a novel and compact biosensing platform using an RF active system. The proposed sensing system is based on the oscillation frequency deviation due to the biomolecular binding mechanism on a resonator. The impedance variation of the resonator, which is caused by a specific biomolecular interaction results in a corresponding change in the oscillation frequency of the oscillator so that this change is used for the discrimination of the biomolecular binding, along with concentration variation. Also, a Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) filter is utilized in order to enhance the biosensing performance of our system. Because the oscillator operates at the skirt frequency range of the SAW filter, a small amount of oscillation frequency deviation is transformed into a large variation in the output amplitude. Next, a power detector is used to detect the amplitude variation and convert it to DC voltage. It was also found that the frequency response of the biosensing system changes linearly with three streptavidin concentrations. Therefore, we expect that the proposed RF biosensing system can be applied to bio/medical applications capable of detecting a nano-sized biomolecular interaction.

  • In this paper, a novel split ring resonator is proposed for improvement of phase noise characteristics that is weak point of oscillator using planar type microstrip line resonator. Oscillator using proposed split ring resonator is designed, it has improved phase noise characteristics. At the fundamental frequency of 5.8GHz, 7.22dBm output power and -83.5 dBc@100kHz phase noise have been measured for oscillator with split ring resonator. The phase noise characteristics of oscillator is improved about 9.7dB compared to one using the general ${\lambda}/4$ microstrip resonator. Next, we designed voltage controlled oscillator using proposed split ring resonator with varactor diode. The VCO has 125MHz tuning range from 5.833GHz to 5.845GHz, and phase noise characteristic is -118~-115.5 dBc/Hz@100KHz. Due to its simple fabrication process and planar type, it is expected that the technique in this paper can be widely used for low phase noise oscillators for both MIC and MMIC applications.

  • In this paper a new clock generation scheme for TDM-CDM converter in the Gap Filler for satellite DMB systems has been proposed. The scheme uses the frame sync signal from the Ku band TDM receiver to lock the VCXO which provides the system clock for the TDM-CDM converter. The locking algorithm can be easily implemented in the FPGA, so that no separate circuitry is needed as in conventional PLL. With a stable OCXO, The scheme can be used to generate the reference clock to the local oscillator for RF parts.

  • This paper covers the design and implementation process of RF hypertermia system for cancer therapy. Among many hyperthermic methods, RF capacitive heating method is discussed because it can heat the deep-seated tumors selectively. The RF power oscillator and its applicators were designed and implemented. And the experiments were performed with agar phantom and dog to prove that the system can heat any depth selectively. And the electrical safety and appropriateness of clinical application was proved through the human living-body test.

  • In this paper, we present the simulation results of the multi-layer VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator), which is composed of the resonator, the oscillator and the buffer circuit. using EM simulator and nonlinear RF circuit simulator. EM simulator is used for obtaining the EM(Electromagnetic) characteristics of the conductor pattern as well as designing the multi-layer VCO. Obtained EM characteristics were used as real components in nonlinear RF circuit simulation. Finally the overall VCO was simulated using the nonlinear RF circuit simulator. The material for the circuit pattern was Ag and the dielectric was DuPont 951AT, which will be applied for LTCC process. The structure is constructed with 4 conducting layer. Simulated results showed that the output level was about 4.5[dBm], the phase noise was -104[dBc/Hz] at 30[kHz] offset frequency, the harmonics -8dBc, and the control voltage sensitivity of 30[MHz/V] with a DC current consumption of 9.5[mA]. The size of VCO is $6{\times}9{\times}2mm$(0.11[cc]).

  • Wireless power transmission (WPT) is a technology using free space as a conductor for transmitting electric power, which aims to transfer not just the transmission signal but also the electrical energy itself. This paper takes issue with the microwave wireless transmission technology utilizing in long-distance transmission. To construct the WPT system, several components are needed, such as RF Oscillator which converts AC power to RF through DC status, high gain antenna and RF rectifier that converts RF back to DC. The array topology is good a candidate for wide use. The objective of this research is to study the efect of the WPT systmem on electric power system.
