  • In this paper, design and implementation issues for a network-oriented RF emitter localization system with array antenna are discussed. For hardware, the problem of array mismatch and RF/IF channel mismatch are introduced and the calibration schemes for solving those problems are also provided. For software, it is explained how to overcome the drawback of conventional MUltiple Signal Identification and Classification (MUSIC) algorithm in a point of identifying the number of received signals and problems such as Data Association Problem and Ghost Node Problem in regard to multiple emitter localization are presented with some approaches for getting around those problems. Finally, for implementation, a criterion for arranging each of sensors and a requirement for alignment of array antenna' orientation are also given.

  • In this paper, we presents a Multiple User Multiple Input Multiple Output (MU-MIMO) test-bed system for Time Division Duplex (TDD) Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A). Using two parameters, the condition number of the channel matrix and the path gain, the MU-MIMO system could switch pre-coder to maintain target Bit Error Rate (BER) level. This paper also introduces a calibration procedure for compensating error of Radio Frequency (RF) paths of the antennas and RF transceivers. From experimental measurements, dynamic pre-coding scheme could maintain target BER, set to 10-3, with the pre-coder set configured with Zero Forcing (ZF), Tomlinson Harashima Pre-coding (THP), Lattice Reduction (LR). The simplest pre-coder ZF is adopted in stable channel, and when path gain become less than 0.25, LR is adopted. Lastly, when condition number of channel matrix become larger than 7, THP is adopted.

  • Microwave metrology for the thickness of metallic or superconductive films provides a new way to measure the film thickness in a non-invasive way by using microwave resonators, with the measurement accuracy affected by standard uncertainties in the resonator quality factor, temperature-dependent resonant frequency and the dimensions of the resonators. Here we study effects of the standard uncertainty in the thickness, $t_{cal}$, of a calibration $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ (YBCO) film on the measured thicknesses, $t_{RF}$, by using a ~ 40 GHz microwave resonator. For the study, we used five YBCO films having the thicknesses of 70 - 360 nm, for which relative standard uncertainties in $t_{RF}$ due to that in $t_{cal}$ are obtained. The standard uncertainty in $t_{cal}$ was determined with the surface roughness of the film taken into account. It appeared that relative standard uncertainty in $t_{cal}$ significantly affects the $t_{RF}$ values, with the values of 1% (5%) in the former resulting in those of 1-2% (5-9%) for the latter at 10 K. Our results show that, for realizing relative standard uncertainties less than 5% in $t_{RF}$ for all the YBCO films, the surface roughness of the calibration films should be small enough to realize a relative standard uncertainty of less than 2.7% in $t_{cal}$.

  • A conventional Grimm-type glow discharge source was constructed and applied to radio-frequency(13.56MHz) discharge for metal and ceramic analysis. We investigated the emission spectrum for aluminium and aluminium oxide and the influence of discharge operating paramaters including argon pressure, rf-power and DC-bias voltages at the sample-side electrode. Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) also was used to investigate the effect of rf-sputtering on the microstructure formation of the aluminium oxide. Linear analytical calibration curves were constructed for Manganese and zinc element in samples of low alloy steel(BAS 401-405) and brass(NIST 1108-1117).

  • This study was conducted to measure the moisture content of powdered food using RF impedance spectroscopic method. In frequency range of 1.0 to 30㎒, the impedance such as reactance and resistance of parallel plate type sample holder filled with wheat flour and red-pepper powder of which moisture content range were 5.93∼-17.07%w.b. and 10.87 ∼ 27.36%w.b., respectively, was characterized using by Q-meter (HP4342). The reactance was a better parameter than the resistance in estimating the moisture density defined as product of moisture content and bulk density which was used to eliminate the effect of bulk density on RF spectral data in this study. Multivariate data analyses such as principal component regression, partial least square regression and multiple linear regression were performed to develop one calibration model having moisture density and reactance spectral data as parameters for determination of moisture content of both wheat flour and red-pepper powder. The best regression model was one by the multiple linear regression model. Its performance for unknown data of powdered food was showed that the bias, standard error of prediction and determination coefficient are 0.179% moisture content, 1.679% moisture content and 0.8849, respectively.

  • SIGINT(SIGnal INTelligence) includes several parameters intercepted by measurement and analysis of the RF(Radio frequency) signal from free space. One of the important parameters is frequency information. Expecially, in order to perform instantaneous frequency measurement of Radar and Missile seeker's RF signals, we use dedicated RF modules as a DFD(Digital Frequency Discriminator) to provide frequency information by measurement of the relative phase difference between signals via intended RF delay lines. It must measure and provide realtime based frequency information on short pulsed RF signal up to 100 nSec or less. This document proposes Ultra wideband DFD consisted of a RF input section of Wideband 4 channel RF delay line and correlator, a digital processing section to measure and provide frequency information from I/Q signal, and a frequency calibration section. Also, it will show design suitability based on test results measured under test condition of very short input pulse signals.

  • The instrumentation and operating characteristics of a gas-jet assisted radio frequency glow discharge atomic absorption spectrometry(RF-GDAAS) are studied. The roles of discharge power, pressure as well as gas flow rate on the sample loss rate and absorbance are described in this paper. Results show that the optimum discharge conditions depend on pressure and discharge power as well as on the gas flow rate. The gas flow rate plays as an important parameter in RF-GDAAS. Absorbance increases as the gas flow rate increase up to 600ml/min., and the optimum absorbance is obtained at the pressure of 3 mbar. The absorbance increases when the discharge power increases as expected, however, the instability of the system due to the heat might be the trade off factor. The linear calibration curves of Ni and Cr in stainless steel(BAS 461-468) and brass (KSS 1121-1126) are obtained with RF-GDAAS.

  • Analytical characteristics of low power-low flow inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectometry(ICP-AES) has been studied. Although the net intensity of the low power ICP is lower than the moderate power ICP, the signal to background ratio becomes higher since the background intensity decreases with decreasing the RF power. The detection limit of the low power ICP is comparable with that of the moderate power ICP. The dynamic range of the calibration curve of the low power ICP is $10^4{\sim}10^5$. The ionization interferences by alkali metals increase with increasing the carrier gas flow rate, but the effects are not varied significantly with the RF power.

  • In this paper, a new six-port direct conversion receiver for high-speed multi-band multi-mode wireless communication system such as software defined radio(SDR) is proposed. The designed receiver is composed of two CMOS four-port BPSK receivers and a dual-band one-stage polyphase filter for quadrature LO signal generation. The four-port BPSK receiver, implemented in 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS technology for the first time in microwave-band, is composed of two active combiners, an active balun, two power detector, and an analog decoder. The proposed polyphase filter adopt type-I architecture, one-stage for reduction of the local oscillator power loss, and LC resonance structure instead of using capacitor for dual-band operation. In order to extent the operation RF bandwidth of the proposed six-port receiver, we include I/Q phase and amplitude calibration scheme in the six-port junction and the power detector. The calibration range of the phase and amplitude mismatch in the proposed calibration scheme is 8 degree and 14 dB, respectively. The validity of the designed six-port receiver is successfully demonstrated by modulating M-QAM, and M-PSK signal with 40 Msps in the two-band of 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz.

  • The thermistor mount is used for precise RF power measurement because the calibration factor is constant according to the change of power. The calibration factor of the standard mount can be measured with an uncertainty less than 0.5 % from the 10 MHz to 1 GHz by direct comparison with the transfer standard using the DC substitution method. Recently, as the supply of precision power meter based on DC substitution method allows simple and fast measurement, a simple direct comparison measurement system with the same level uncertainty was designed and the minimum required specifications of components through analysis of mismatch error was proposed. The uncertainty was evaluated for system validation, and the results show that uncertainties have been well maintained within 0.5 % in the measurement frequencies.
