  • In this paper, a direct controller for nonlinear plants using a neural network is presented. The controller is composed of an approximate controller and a neural network auxiliary controller. The approximate controller gives the rough control and the neural network controller gives the complementary signal to further reduce the output tracking error. This method does not put too much restriction on the type of nonlinear plant to be controlled. In this method, a RBF neural network is trained and the system has a stable performance for the inputs it has been trained for. Simulation results show that it is very effective and can realize a satisfactory control of the nonlinear system.

  • Spray drying is a unique drying process for powder production. Spray dried product must be free-flowing in order to fill the pressing dies rapidly, especially in the ceramic production. The important powder characteristics are; the particle size distribu-tion and moisture content of the finished product that can be estimated and adjusted by the spray dryer operation, within limits, through regulation of atomizer and drying conditions. In order to estimate the moisture content of the resultant dried product, we modeled the control system of the drying process using two different Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approaches, namely the Back-Propagation Multiplayer Perceptron (BPMLP) algorithm and the Radial Basis Function (RBF) network. It was found out that the performance of both of the artificial neural network models were quite significant and the total testing error for the 100 data was 0.8 and 0.7 for the BPMLP algorithm and the RBF network respectively.

  • This paper proposes the enhanced REF network, which arbitrates learning rate and momentum dynamically by using the fuzzy system, to arbitrate the connected weight effectively between the middle layer of REF network and the output layer of REF network. ART2 is applied to as the learning structure between the input layer and the middle layer and the proposed auto-turning method of arbitrating the learning rate as the method of arbitrating the connected weight between the middle layer and the output layer. The enhancement of proposed method in terms of learning speed and convergence is verified as a result of comparing it with the conventional delta-bar-delta algorithm and the REF network on the basis of the ART2 to evaluate the efficiency of learning of the proposed method.

  • We fabricated gas recognition system using conducting polymer sensor array for recognizing and analyzing VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds) gases. The polypyrrole and polyaniline thin film sensors which were made by chemical polymerization were employed to detect VOCs. The multi-dimensional sensor signals obtained from the sensor array were analyzed using PCA(principal component analysis) technique and RBF(radial basis function) Network. Throughout the experimental trails, we confirmed that RBF Network is effective than PCA technique in identifying VOCs.

  • This paper proposes a novel method for the recognition of passports based on the CDM(Conditional Dilation Morphology) masking and the ART2-based RBF neural networks. For the extraction of individual codes for recognizing, this paper targets code sequence blocks including individual codes by applying Sobel masking, horizontal smearing and a contour tracking algorithm on the passport image. Individual codes are recovered and extracted from the binarized areas by applying CDM masking and vertical smearing. This paper also proposes an ART2-based hybrid network that adapts the ART2 network for the middle layer. This network is applied to the recognition of individual codes. The experiment results showed that the proposed method has superior in performance in the recognition of passport.

  • This paper presents the implementation of the real-time object tracking control of the ROBOKER head. The visual servoing technique is used to track the moving object, but suffers from ill-estimated Jacobian of the virtual link design. To improve the tracking performance, the RBF(Radial Basis Function) network is used to compensate for uncertainties in the kinematics of the robot head in on-line fashion. The reference compensation technique is employed as a neural network control scheme. Performances of three schemes, the kinematic based scheme, the Jacobian based scheme, and the neural network compensation scheme are verified by experimental studies. The neural compensation scheme performs best.

  • In this paper, a time-delay problem of a tele-operated control system is investigated and compensated by neural network. The smith predictor requires an exact system model to deal with a time-delay in the system. To compensate for modeling errors in the configuration of the Smith predictor, a neural network approach is presented. Based on forming the Smith predictor structure, the radial basis function(RBF) neural network estimator is used. Simulation and experimental studies are conducted to show the functionality of the proposed method.

  • Radial Basis Function (RBF) networks is known as efficient method in classification problems and function approximation. The basis function of RBF networks is usual adopted normal distribution like the Gaussian function. The output of the Gaussian function has the maximum at the center and decrease as increase the distance from the center. For learning of neural network, the method treating the limited area of input space is sometimes more useful than the method treating the whole of input space. The q-normal distribution is the set of probability density function include the Gaussian function. In this paper, we introduce the RBF networks with the basis function of q-normal distribution and actually approximate a function using the RBF networks.

  • A nonlinear channel blind equalizer by using a hybrid genetic algorithm, which merges a genetic algorithm with simulated annealing, and a RBF network is presented. In this study, a hybrid genetic algorithm is used to estimate the output states of a nonlinear channel, based on the Bayesian likelihood fitness function, instead of the channel parameters. From these estimated output states, the desired channel states of the nonlinear channel are derived and placed at the center of a RBF equalizer to reconstruct transmitted symbols. In the simulations, binary signals are generated at random with Gaussian noise. The performance of the proposed method is compared with those of a conventional genetic algorithm(GA) and a simplex GA, and the relatively high accuracy and fast convergence of the method are achieved.
