  • Using the complex formulation of plane curves which R. T. Farouki introduced, we can identify any plane polynomial curve with only a polynomial with complex coefficients. In this paper, using the well-known fundamental theorem of algebra, we completely factorize the polynomial over the complex number field C and from the completely factorized form of the polynomial, we find a new necessary and sufficient condition for a plane polynomial curve to be a Pythagorean-hodograph curve, obseving the set of all roots of the complex polynomial corresponding to the plane polynomial curve. Applying this method to space polynomial curves in the three dimensional Minkowski space $R^{2,1}$, we also find the necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial curve in $R^{2,1}$ to be a PH curve in a new finer form and characterize all possible curves completely.

  • In this paper, a method for determining the boundary conditions which derived from the random obstacles on the curves was presented. A simple computer program using this method is also developed. This determination method and program can be used for a good engineering tool in optimal curve design and an Radius-transition curve length $(R-L_t)$ combination within the permissible zone can be improved without any increased costs.

  • The present paper considers the constraint effect on J-R curves under the two-parameter $J-A_2$ controlled crack growth within a certain amount of crack extension. Since the parameter $A_2$ in $J-A_2$ three-term solution is independent of applied loading under fully plasticity or large-scale defor-mation $A_2$ is a proper constraint parameter uring crack extension. Both J and $A_2$ are used to char-acterize the resistance curves of ductile crack growth using J as the loading level and $A_2$ are used to char-acterize the resistance curves of ductile crack growth using J as the loading level and A2 as a con-straint parameter. Approach of the constraint-corrected J-R curve is proposed and a procedure of transferring the J-R curves determined from standard ASTM procedure to non-standard speci-mens or real cracked structures is outlined. The test data(e.g. initiation toughness JIC and tearing modulus $T_R$) of Joyce and Link(Engineer-ing Fracture Mechanics 1997, 57(4) : 431-446) for single-edge notched bend[SENB] specimen with from shallow to deep cracks is employed to demonstrate the efficiency of the present approach. The variation of $J_{IC}$ and $T_R$ with the constraint parameter $A_2$ is obtained and a con-straint-corrected J-R curves is constructed for the test material of HY80 steel. Comparisons show that the predicted J-R curves can very well match with the experimental data for both deep and shallow cracked specimens over a reasonably large amount of crack extension. Finally the present constraint-corrected J-R curve is used to predict the crack growth resistance curves for different fracture specimens. over a reasonably large amount of crack extension. Finally the present constraint-corrected J-R curve is used to predict the crack growth resistance curves for different fracture specimens. The constraint effects of specimen types and specimen sizes on the J-R curves can be easily obtained from the constrain-corrected J-R curves.

  • J-R curve tests were performed on 1T compact specimens of SA516 Gr. 70 carbon steels under reverse cyclic loading. A Direct-Current Potential Drop (DCPD) method, one of the nondestructive techniques to detect flaw of structure, is being increasingly used for monitoring crack initiation and stable crack growth in typical fracture mechanics specimens for J-R testing. In many aspects this method is simpler than the unloading compliance method. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the J-R Curve according to the crack length measurement techniques under reverse cyclic loading. In order to prove the reliability and repeatability of the DCPD method, the crack length measured by using DCPD method was compared to one determined from unloading compliance. Consequently, this DCPD method correlated well with J-R curves and crack extension measurements determined from unloading compliance method.

  • A study of 188 lactations of Holstein cows in Gwangju area was undertaken to establish the shape of lactation curve during the period from October in 1980 to January in 1982. The Gammafunction described by Wood(1967) was fitted to the lactations observed. The results obtained in the present study were summarized as follows; 1. The lactation curve of the 188 lactations was expressed by the equation based on Wood's model (1967) as follows; Yn=24.5m0.0762e-0.0944n(R2=0.99) 2. The lactation curves by parity were represented by the equations as follows; Yn=18.81n0.1486e-0.0741n(R2=0.98)……………parity 1 Yn=26.51n0.1161e-0.1200n(R2=0.96)……………parity 2 Yn=26.95n0.2804e-0.1703n(R2=0.99)……………parity 3 Yn=27.92n0.1429e-0.1427n(R2=0.98)……………parity 4 Yn=22.61n0.1985e-0.1211n(R2=0.94)……………parity 5 3. • The point $P{\in}{\mathbb{P}}^2$ is referred to as a Galois point for a nonsingular plane algebraic curve C if the projection ${\pi}_P:C{\rightarrow}{\mathbb{P}}^1$ from P is a Galois covering. In contrast, the point $P^{\prime}{\in}C^{\prime}$ is referred to as a weak Galois Weierstrass point of a nonsingular algebraic curve C' if P' is a Weierstrass point of C' and a total ramification point of some Galois covering $f:C^{\prime}{\rightarrow}{\mathbb{P}}^1$. In this paper, we discuss the following phenomena. For a nonsingular plane curve C with a Galois point P and a double covering ${\varphi}:C{\rightarrow}C^{\prime}$, if there exists a common ramification point of ${\pi}_P$ and ${\varphi}$, then there exists a weak Galois Weierstrass point $P^{\prime}{\in}C^{\prime}$ with its Weierstrass semigroup such that H(P') = or , which is a semigroup generated by two positive integers r and 2r + 1 or 2r - 1, such that P' is a branch point of ${\varphi}$. Conversely, for a weak Galois Weierstrass point $P^{\prime}{\in}C^{\prime}$ with H(P') = or , there exists a nonsingular plane curve C with a Galois point P and a double covering ${\varphi}:C{\rightarrow}C^{\prime}$ such that P' is a branch point of ${\varphi}$.

  • The evaluation of the elastic-plastic fracture toughness $J_{1C}$ was performed on the center of weld metal(CWM), the heat affected zone (HAZ) and the base metal (BM) of API 5LB steel pipes welded by the high frequency electric resistance welding. The $J_{1C}$ was evaluated by the JSME R-Curve and JSME SZW methods using the smooth and side-grooved specimens. The results are as follows; (1) The $J_{1C}$ values by the SZW method are overestimated as compared with those by the R-curve method, because the micro-crack is formed as SZW increase with the deformation at SZ after initiation of the ductile crack. (2) The everage of $J_{1C}$ values by the the R-curve and the SZW methods in side-grooved specimens tended to decrease in comparison with smooth specimens 9.42% at CWM, 4.2% at HAZ, 23.2% at BM, respectively. (3) The boundary of the fatigue pre-crack, stretched zone, and dimple regions appeared more clearly in side-grooved specimens, for the slight change of SZW in the direction of the plate thickness, as compared with smooth specimens.

  • Using the SMC(sheet moulding compound) composite material consisting of E-glass chopped strand mat and unsaturated polyester resin, three-point bending tests are carried out to evaluate the elasto-plastic fracture toughness by means of R curve. The crack extension is experimentally observed with the ink staining method. The point of stable crack growth is discussed in consideration of the load-load point displacement curve, the damage behavior of the notch vicinity, and the R-curves. The damage zone of the notch vicinity was composed of the initiation and growth of subcracks as well as those of the main crack. The point of stable crack growth can be defined as the inflection point in the R curves and its point also concurrs with the proportional limit on the load-load point displacement curve.
