The management of vehicular supply of "perishable" construction material, such as concrete mixes, faces a series of uncertainties such as weather, daily traffic patterns and accidents. Presented in this paper is a logistics control model for managing a hauling fleet with interrelated processes at both ends and queue capacities. Discrete event simulation is used to model the complex interactions of production units and the randomness of the real world. Two alternative strategies for ready mix concrete delivery, with and without an off-site waiting queue, are studied to compare supply performance. Secondly, the paper discusses the effect of an agent-based GPS tracking system providing real-time travel data that lessens the uncertainty of trucking time. The results show that the combination of GPS information with off-site queuing reduces productivity loss and process wastes of concrete placement as well as the idleness of supply trucks when crew or pump experience an unexpected stoppage.
In this paper we present some research results on computing intensive applications using modern high performance architectures and from the perspective of high computational needs. Computing intensive applications are an important family of applications in distributed computing domain. They have been object of study using different distributed computing paradigms and infrastructures. Such applications distinguish for their demanding needs for CPU computing, independently of the amount of data associated with the problem instance. Among computing intensive applications, there are applications based on simulations, aiming to maximize system resources for processing large computations for simulation. In this research work, we consider an application that simulates scheduling and resource allocation in a Grid computing system using Genetic Algorithms. In such application, a rather large number of simulations is needed to extract meaningful statistical results about the behavior of the simulation results. We study the performance of Oracle Grid Engine for such application running in a Cluster of high computing capacities. Several scenarios were generated to measure the response time and queuing time under different workloads and number of nodes in the cluster.

We propose an approximate algorithm to analyze the queuing system with n bursty and heterogeneous arrival processes. Each input process is modeled by Interrupted Bernoulli Process(IBP). We approximate N arrival processes by a single state variable and subsequently simplify the transition probability matrix of the Markov chain associated with these N arrival processes. Using this single state variable of arrival processes, we describe the state of the queuing system and analyze the system numerically with the reduced transition probability matrix. We compute the queue length distribution, the delay distribution, and the loss probability. Comparisons with simulation data show that the approximation algorithm has a good accuracy.

BPMS (Business Process Management Systems) is aninformation system that systematically supports designing, administrating, and improving the business processes. It can execute the business processes by assigning tasks to human or computer agents according to the predefined definitions of the processes. In this research we developed a task assignment algorithm that can maximize overall process efficiency under the limitation of agents' capacity. Since BPMS manipulates the formal and predictable business processes, we can analyze the processes using queuing theory to achieve overall process efficiency. We first transform the business processes into queuing network model in which the agents are considered as servers. After that, workloads of agents are calculated as server utilization and we can determine the task assignment policy by balancing the workloads. This will make the workloads of all agents be minimized, and the overall process efficiency is achieved in this way. Another application of the results can be capacity planning of agents in advance and business process optimization in reengineering context. We performed the simulation analysis to validate the results and also show the effectiveness of the algorithm by comparing with well known dispatching policies.
In mobile communications, a class of variable-complexity algorithms for convolutional decoding known as sequential decoding algorithms is of interest since they have a computational time that could vary with changing channel conditions. The Fano algorithm is one well-known version of a sequential decoding algorithm. Since the decoding time of a Fano decoder follows the Pareto distribution, which is a heavy-tailed distribution parameterized by the channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), buffers are required to absorb the variable decoding delays of Fano decoders. Furthermore, since the decoding time drawn by a certain Pareto distribution can become unbounded, a maximum limit is often employed by a practical decoder to limit the worst-case decoding time. In this paper, we investigate the relations between buffer occupancy, decoding time, and channel conditions in a system where the Fano decoder is not allowed to run with unbounded decoding time. A timeout limit is thus imposed so that the decoding will be terminated if the decoding time reaches the limit. We use discrete-time semi-Markov models to describe such a Fano decoding system with timeout limits. Our queuing analysis provides expressions characterizing the average buffer occupancy as a function of channel conditions and timeout limits. Both numerical and simulation results are provided to validate the analytical results.
SVP-capable router supporting guaranteed services on the internet generally uses a packet scheduler based on the Weighted Fair Queuing(WFQ) algorithm to secure required qualities of traffic flows. In this paper we proposed a RSVP-capable router based on the LOFQ(Latency optimized fair queuing) algorithm that improves the efficiency in bandwidth utilization with keeping the compatibility with the original RSVP procedure. The proposed router reserves the optimal amount of resource for each flow to secure its required quality-of-service with the recently introduced LOFQ scheduler. The results of the simulation applying the proposed router to an evaluation network showed that it may yield the gain of up to 30% compared to that in the original one in terms of the number of admitted flows.
In all contemporary superscalar processors, the result repositories are implemented as the Reorder Buffer(ROB) slots. In such designs, the ROB is a large multi-ported structure. There are several approaches for reducing the ROB complexity in processors. The one technique relies on a distributed implementation that spreads the centralized ROB structure across the function units(FUs). Each distributed component sized to match the FU workload and with one write port and one read port on each component. We are using M/M/1 Queuing theory to determine the number of entries in each ROB component that the performance of processor depends on. Our schemes are evaluated using the simulation of CPU2000 benchmarks.
In this paper, we propose a new queuing model, MMDP/MMDP/1/K, for an asynchronous transfer mode(ATM) multiplexer with multiple quality of service(QoS) variable bit rate (VBR) traffic in broadband-integrated services digital network (B-ISDN). We use the Markov Modulated Deterministic Process(MMDP) to approximate the actual arrival process and another MMDP for service process Using queuing analysis, we derive a formula for the cell loss probability of the ATM multiplexer in terms of the limiting probabilities of a Markov chain. The cell loss probability can be used for connection admission control in ATM multiplexer and the calculation of equivalent bandwidth for arrival traffic, The major advantages of this approach are simplicity in analysis, accuracy of analysis by comparison of simulation, and numerical stability.

In this paper, we proposed a new buffer management algorithm using perVC-Queuing discipline. Proposed algorithm uses service rate estimation and assigns dynamic perVC threshold to each VCs. Service rate estimation and dynamic perVC threshold combined with global threshold provide nearly optimal throughput and improve fairness performance of network resource among GFR VCs as well as guarantee MCR of all VCs. From simulation results, we demonstrate the proposed scheme fulfills the requirement of GFR service as well as improves the TCP throughput.

To improve the accuracy and enhance the applicability of existing models, this paper proposes a generalized Markov chain model for IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) under the widely adopted assumption of ideal transmission channel. The IEEE 802.11 DCF is modeled by a two dimensional Markov chain, which takes into account unsaturated traffic, backoff freezing, retry limits, the difference between maximum retransmission count and maximum backoff exponent, and limited buffer size based on the M/G/1/K queuing model. We show that existing models can be treated as special cases of the proposed generalized model. Furthermore, simulation results validate the accuracy of the proposed model.
