Some Peculiarities of Structure and Growth of Larch Stands in Western Mongolia

  • In this paper we have introduced some results of study on stand growth pattern and stand structure of larch forest which are located in selected forest sites of Khangai and Gobi-Altai mountain ranges of Mongolia. Our investigations showed that growth intensity and stand structure in western Mongolia are very specific from the other forest vegetation zones of Mongolia. Studies on the stand structure and growth trend indicate that tree types of stand structure and different types of growth of Larix sibrica are very common in Western Mongolia. These peculiarities of stand structure and growth of larch stands in Western Monolia could be used for inventory work and an improvement of the forest management in Western Mongolian region. The larch tree is the dominant tree species in Western Mogolia. Forest cover of the region is about 15%, which is two times higher than the country's average. In this region forest area is divided into 4 forest sub-regions: the Central Khangai, Western Khangai, North Eastern Khangai and South Easterun Khangai sub-regions including taiga, pseudo taiga, sub taiga, sub-alpine and forest steppe belts. Silviculture practices and forest research management request to study forest growth trends in local and general conditions, which means to indicate a change of taxonomic characteristics of stand from time to time including diameter, height, basal area, growth stock etc. The forest management practice mostly uses tables of forest growth and yield based on the results of long term research on forest growth. Forest yield tables and other relevant forest standards of Russia are used for the forest inventory and forest management. They are not able to determine forest structure and growth peculiatities of Mongolian forests. Studies on forest resource assessment in Mongolia indicate that after logging operations and forest fires the natural regeneration of desired species such as pine and larch often does not succeed. This situation forces to take a different approach of forest management and silviculture practice depending on the stand structure and growth rate of the forest stands. According to our investigation in last years, forest growth pattern of larch forest depends mostly on stand structure, stand age and growth condition including forest soil, climate and location in different slopes. Due to improve environmental function of forest ecosystem in the region, it is needed to conduct very comprehensive study of high mountain forest ecosystem in selected sub-regions.

4차 암모늄기를 가진 키토산 유도체의 항균성 (Antibacterial Activity by Chitosan Derivatives with Quaternary Ammonium Salt)

  • 천연고분자인 chitin의 탈아세틸화물인 chitosan의 유리아미노기에 알킬 길이가 다른 알데히드를 이용하여 N-alkyl chitosan 유도체를 각각 합성한 다음, 이들을 methyl iodide로 4차화시킴으로서 4차 암모늄기가 도입된 새로운 수용성 chitosan 유도체를 합성하여, 도입된 알킬기의 길이에 따른 항균성을 그람양성균인 S. aureus(ATCC 6538P)와 그람 음성균인 E. coli(ATCC 14339)에 대해서 shake flask법을 이용하여 검토하였다. 그 결과 소수성이 증대될수록 항균력은 증가하였고, 특히 그람음성균인 E. coli에 비해 그람양성균인 S. aureus에 대한 항균력이 더욱 증대됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 cytoplasmic membrane의 구조상의 차이에서 기인한 것으로 생각된다.

Sedimentation in the lake catchments in South Korea

  • This study discusses the soil erosion on hillslopes and sediment deposition in lakes within catchments in South Korea. In order to determine seasonal variations of sedimentation in Yeongcheon and Seondong lakes, the sediment traps were set in the deep part of both lakes and lake sediments have been sampledmonthly from July 2004 to August 2005. Some properties such as highmineral content, fine particle size and high particle density in the Yeongcheon Lake indicate intensive soil erosion, sediment transportation and deposition throughout the catchment for a long time. The high sediment yield in the Seondong Lake is related with higher weathering intensity and extreme soil erosion by running water due to higher seasonal rainfall amount. Rates of erosion and sedimentation in the Seondong Lake are estimated to be higher than those of the Yeongcheon Lake, suggesting that the Seondong Lake is associated with higher precipitation, smaller catchment area, and extreme soil vulnerability to ephemeral erosion by overland flow during the heavy rainfall event. Consequently, both catchments are characterized by different erosion and sedimentation processes, as well as different geomorphic factors (bedrock, soil structure, rainfall intensity and catchment area).

청원 소로리 후빙기 시대의 환경 -출토목재의 수종분석을 중심으로- (Environments of Post-Glacial Age at Sorori, Reconstructed by the Species of Excavated Woods)

  • 충북 청원군 옥산 소로리 A지구 토탄 II지역 후빙기시대 지층에서 출토된 목편, 가지류 등 156점을 분석하였다. 모두 직경 2cm미만의 작은 나무만이 출토되었는데 출토된 층위는 해발 31.9m-33.1m에 나타난 청회색 찰흑층중 상부에서 나온 것이다 (방사성탄소연대: 8,800 bp). 전체 156점을 식별한 결과 오리나무속 중의 오리나무류 (95%)와 느릅나무속 (5%) 등 2 수종의 활엽수로만 식별되었다. 현재 오리나무와 느릅나무는 한반도의 온대중부와 온대북부에 걸쳐 분포하는 것으로 보아 8,800 bp 당시의 중부내륙의 기후는 현재보다 다습하였던 것으로 보인다.

  • The previous study reported that the quaternary copolymer of MMA, BA, MAA, and NEA was expected to be a good monomer composition for a binder polymer with good rubbing fastness for digital textile printing(DTP) pigment ink. However, the rubbing fastness of the dyed fabric with the quaternary copolymer binder containing pigment ink is not enough to be commercially used. Therefore, this study aims to optimize MMA:BA:MAA:NEA composition for improved rubbing fastness. And the binder polymer with various MMA:BA:MAA:NEA compositions were synthesized using miniemulsion polymerization. The particle size, viscosity, molecular weight, and Tg of the synthesized binder were evaluated. And the color strength and rubbing fastness of the black pigment ink dyed cotton fabrics with the prepared binders were also evaluated. Then, the stiffness of undyed and dyed cotton fabrics were evaluated to investigate the changes in touch as the binder structure changes.

Recent advances in NMR-based structural characterization of αB-crystallin and its potential role in human diseases

  • ${\alpha}B$-crystallin (${\alpha}BC$) is a member of a small heat-shock protein (sHSP) superfamily and plays a predominant role in cellular protein homeostasis network by rescuing misfolded proteins from irreversible aggregation. ${\alpha}BC$ assembles into dynamic and polydisperse high molecular weight complexes containing 12 to 48 monomers; this variable stereochemistry of ${\alpha}BC$ has been linked to quaternary subunit exchange and its chaperone activity. The chaperone activity of ${\alpha}BC$ poses great potential as therapeutic agents for various neurodegenerative diseases. In this mini-review, we briefly outline the recent advancement in structural characterization of ${\alpha}BCs$ and its potential role to inhibit protein misfolding and aggregation in various human diseases. In particular, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and its complimentary techniques have contributed much to elucidate highly-dynamic nature of ${\alpha}BCs$, among which notable advancements are discussed in detail. We highlight the importance of resolving the structural details of various ${\alpha}BC$ oligomers, their quaternary dynamics, and structural heterogeneity.

Towards effective indirect radioisotope energy converters with bright and radiation hard scintillators of (Gd,Y)3Al2Ga3O12 family

  • Ceramics of quaternary garnets (Gd,Y)3Al2Ga3O12 doped with Ce, Tb have been fabricated and evaluated as prospective materials for indirect energy converters of α-and β-voltaic. Samples were characterized at excitation with an X-ray source and an intense 150 keV electron beam and showed good temperature stability of their emission and tolerance to irradiation. The role of X-rays accompanied the α-particle emitting in the increase of the conversion efficiency is clarified. The garnet-type structure of the matrix in the developed materials allows the production of quality crystalline mass with a light yield exceeding that of the commonly used YAG: Ce scintillator by a factor of two times.

  • 루신-대응 조절 단백질(Lrp)은 18.8 kDa의 분자량을 갖는 글로벌 조절 단백질로서 대장균과 같은 장내세균과에서 많은 대사작용 오페론의 기능적 활성도를 조절한다. 단백질의 4차 구조를 규명하기 위한 목적으로 Lrp단백질 코드하는 유전자가 삽입된 재조합 플라스미드 pQE vector를 발현시킨 6 ${\times}$ His-tag Lrp 야생형과 $^3H$로 표지된 Lrp를 분리 정제한 후 cross linker들인 glutaraldehyde, 1,2,3,4-diepoxy-butane (DEB), ethylene glycol bis (succinimidyl succinate) (EGS)으로 cross link 실험을 수행하여 Lrp가 $0.3{\mu}M$ 이하의 낮은 농도에서나 $5{\mu}M$의 높은 농도에서 이량체, 사량체, 육량체, 팔량체로 존재할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

동해 울릉분지 제 4기 질량류 퇴적체 분포 및 기원 (Distribution and Origin of Quaternary Mass Transport Deposit in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea)

  • 동해 울릉분지에서 취득된 2차원 다중채널 탄성파 탐사자료의 해석에 의하면, 연구지역에 분포하는 제 4기 퇴적층은 침식부정합면에 의해 4개의 층서단위로 구분된다. 각 층서단위는 서로 다른 특징을 갖는 18개의 질량류 퇴적체로 구성된다. 탄성파 단면상에서 질량류 퇴적체는 캐오틱 혹은 투명한 음향상 특징을 보이며, 쐐기 혹은 렌즈상의 외부형태를 가진다. 질량류 퇴적체는 주로 울릉분지 남쪽사면 일대에 중첩되어 분포하며, 분지중앙으로 향하면서 층후가 얇아지는 경향을 보인다. 시간구조도에 의하면 연구지역의 중앙에는 주변보다 융기된 지형과 북서 및 북동방향의 저지대가 발달한다. 등시층후도에 의하면 연구지역의 남쪽으로부터 기원한 질량류 퇴적체는 사면을 따라 분지중앙으로 유입되었으며, 지구조운동으로 형성된 융기지형에 의해 두 방향으로 분리되어 발달하였다. 결과적으로 울릉분지에 분포하는 제 4기 질량류 퇴적체의 발달은 다량의 퇴적물 공급, 저해수면시기 동안의 가스하이드레이트 해리, 중앙부에 위치한 융기지형 등의 요인에 의해 크게 조절되었다.
