  • The aim of this project is to analyze the queueing model with the two types of customers which either can wait unrestrictedly or wait restrictively in the system depending on the condition of service facility unless they may be served immediately. This model consists of the three-dimensional state space and then quasi birth-death process is formulated. The steady-state probabilities and measures of performance of this system are derived by using Matrix Geometric method.

  • The aim of the present investigation is to examine the propagation of plane waves in transversely isotropic homogeneous magneto thermoelastic rotating medium with fractional order heat transfer. It is found that, for two dimensional assumed model, there exist three types of coupled longitudinal waves (quasi-longitudinal, quasi-transverse and quasi-thermal waves). The wave characteristics such as phase velocity, attenuation coefficients, specific loss, penetration depths, energy ratios and amplitude ratios of various reflected and transmitted waves are computed and depicted graphically. The conservation of energy at the free surface is verified. The effects of rotation and fractional order parameter by varying different values are represented graphically.

  • In this work, two dimensional (2D) and quasi three-dimensional (quasi-3D) HSDTs are proposed for bending and free vibration investigation of functionally graded (FG) plates using hyperbolic shape function. Unlike the existing HSDT, the proposed theories have a novel displacement field which include undetermined integral terms and contains fewer unknowns. The material properties of the plate is inhomogeneous and are considered to vary continuously in the thickness direction by three different distributions; power-law, exponential and Mori-Tanaka model, in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The governing equations which consider the effects of both transverse shear and thickness stretching are determined through the Hamilton's principle. The closed form solutions are deduced by employing Navier method and then fundamental frequencies are obtained by solving the results of eigenvalue problems. In-plane stress components have been determined by the constitutive equations of composite plates. The transverse stress components have been determined by integrating the 3D stress equilibrium equations in the thickness direction of the FG plate. The accuracy of the present formulation is demonstrated by comparisons with the different 2D, 3D and quasi-3D solutions available in the literature.

  • Welding distortion is more serious problem than any other problems caused by welding process, especially, in the heavy-industrial place. These welding distortions are caused by nonuniform heating and cooling of metal during and after welding operations. And these distortion quantities are must be known to worker in production line because distorions are important role in assembling part. Therefore an analytical model to explain and predict the welding distortion are needed. A numerical analysis of welding distortion which is inelastic behavior of weldment would require the three dimensional calculation. But computing time and memory would be very large, and the resulting cost might be unacceptable. Therefore we use a numerical technique for two dimensional analysis in the section normal to the weld direction of weldment under an assumption of quasi-stationary conditions. But the result of the calculation under two dimensional(plane strain) assumption was not satisfied as compared with experimental result. This paper proposed a technique for analysing the welding angular distortion by using a constraint boundary condition on the two dimensional finite element model. The simulation results revealed that the constraint boundary model could more reasonably describe the welding distortion than the plane strain model did.

  • A preceding companion article introduced the slot jet approach for large-scale quasi-steady modelling of a downburst outflow. This article extends the approach to model the time-dependent features of the outflow. A two-dimensional slot jet with an actuated gate produces a gust with a dominant roll vortex. Two designs for the gate mechanism are investigated. Hot-wire anemometry velocity histories and profiles are presented. As well, a three-dimensional, subcloud numerical model is used to approximate the downdraft microphysics, and to compute stationary and translating outflows at high resolution. The evolution of the horizontal and vertical velocity components is examined. Comparison of the present experimental and numerical results with field observations is encouraging.

  • This paper presents the Campbell diagram analysis of the rotordynamic system using the full order model (FOM) and the reduced order model (ROM) techniques to determine the critical speeds, identify the stability and reduce the computational time. Due to the spin-speed-dependent matrices (e.g., centrifugal stiffening matrix), several model order reduction (MOR) techniques may be considered, such as the modal superposition (MS) method and the Krylov subspace-based MOR techniques (e.g., Ritz vector (RV), quasi-static Ritz vector (QSRV), multifrequency quasi-static Ritz vector (MQSRV), multifrequency/ multi-spin-speed quasi-static Ritz vector (MMQSRV) and the combined Ritz vector & modal superposition (RV+MS) methods). The proposed MMQSRV method in this study is extended from the MQSRV method by incorporating the rotational-speed-dependent stiffness matrices into the Krylov subspace during the MOR process. Thus, the objective of this note is to respond to the question of whether to use the MS method or the Krylov subspace-based MOR technique in establishing the Campbell diagram of the shaft-disc-blade assembly systems in three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA). The Campbell diagrams produced by the FOM and various MOR methods are presented and discussed thoroughly by computing the norm of relative errors (ER). It is found that the RV and the MS methods are dominant at low and high rotating speeds, respectively. More precisely, as the spinning velocity becomes large, the calculated ER produced by the RV method is significantly increased; in contrast, the ER produced by the MS method is smaller and more consistent. From a computational point of view, the MORs have substantially reduced the time computing considerably compared to the FOM. Additionally, the verification of the 3D FE rotordynamic model is also provided and found to be in close agreement with the existing solutions.

  • In this paper we present the aspect of inertial oscillation typically observed in the spin-up of fluids at low Rossby numbers in a circular cylinder. Numerical computations for the quasi three-dimensional equation as well as one-dimensional equation are performed to estimate the predictability of the one-dimensional equation with Ekman pumping/suction models. It is assumed that the discrepancy between the two results may be attributed to the inertial oscillation The detailed analysis to the numerical results reveals that the axial plane is dominated by a comparatively strong oscillatory flows caused by the inertial oscillation. In view of the fact that the time-averaged flow field however agrees to the Taylor-Proudman theorem, it is recommended that further analysis is needed to obtain an improved one-dimensional model like the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation for turbulent flows.

  • This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) integrated numerical model where the wave-induced pore pressures in a porous seabed around breakwater heads were investigated. Unlike previous research, the Navier-Stokes equation is solved with internal wave generation for the flow model, while Biot's dynamic seabed behaviour is considered in the seabed model. With the present model, a parametric study was conducted to examine the effects of wave and soil characteristics and breakwater configuration on the wave-induced pore pressure around breakwater heads. Based on numerical examples, it was found that the wave-induced pore pressures at breakwater heads are greater than that beneath a breakwater. The wave-induced seabed response around breakwater heads become more important with: (i) a longer wave period; (ii) a seabed with higher permeability and degree of saturation; and (iii) larger angle between the incident waves and breakwater. Furthermore, the relative difference of wave-induced pore pressure between fully-dynamic and quasi-static solutions are larger at breakwater heads than that beneath a breakwater.
