  • The radioactive wastes generated from the nuclear industry can be divided into the forms of solid, liquid, or gas. Radioactive methyl iodide, a gaseous radioactive waste, is absorbed by activated carbon with 5 wt% of Trietylenediamine (1,4-diazania-bicycle[2.2.2]octane, TEDA) impregnated on the surface. Methyl Iodide ($CH_3I$) is combined chemically with TEDA (the final product : I-TEDA). To recycle radioactive activated carbon, removal of I-TEDA from activated carbon is needed. A wet method for recycling impregnated active carbon was developed to remove radioactive I-TEDA using an acetonitrile solution, which produces lots of secondary wastes. We suggest the removal of I-TEDA by supercritical carbon dioxide with co-solvents. In this experiment, we used a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) for measuring the removal rate of the I-TEDA. From the experimental results, methanol was found to be the optimum co-solvent, and the optimum conditions such as temperature, pressure, and co-solvent flow rate were obtained. Possibility of using supercritical fluid in the removal of I-TEDA from radioactive activated carbon was also discussed.

  • In this study, the measurement of physical properties of ethylene oxide-propylene oxide adducted zwitterionic surfactants were measured such as critical micelle concentration, surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle, viscosity and foam stability. Also, the dual function characteristics of a zwitterionic surfactant were investigated by determining an isoelectric point, which were obtained using zeta potential measurement and QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) experiments. The isoelectric point of DEP-OSA82-AO zwitterionic surfactant determined by zeta potential measurement was close to that obtained by QCM experiment and both results have shown almost the same trend as that determined by the frictional property measured using an automated mildness tester. In particular, it has been observed that DEP32-OSA82-AO and DEP34-OSA82-AO surfactants provide better softening effect at a pH of acidic or neutral condition than at an alkaline condition. This result indicates that both surfactants act as a cationic surfactant at a pH of acidic or neutral condition and thus provide good softening effect during a rinsing cycle in the detergency process.

  • In this work, the performance of various promoters was investigated used in $CO_2$ separation from the gases emitted from steel-making process using gas hydrate technology. The studied promoters are tetrahydrofuran (THF), propylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, which are all expected to form a structure II hydrate, and the target gases include $CO_2/N_2$ mixed gases ($CO_2/N_2$ = 20/80 and 40/60) and Blast Furnace Gas (BFG). The phase equilibrium points were measured when each promoter was added with various concentrations. For fast acquisition of abundant data, the "continuous" Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) method was employed. In addition, the crystal structure of each gas hydrate was analyzed by Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD).

  • In this paper, the rheological chances in sensitive materials was investigated by using QCA(Quartz Chemical Analyzer). Langmuir-Blodgett method was used to transfer sensitive material to the quartz crystals because of its facility to control that amount, and deposited sensitive material has uniformity to compare with other methods respectively. For the gas sensor using mass loading effect of quartz crystal microbalance, generally the Sauberary equation has been believed to represent the only mass loading effect. But when the organic gas is adsorpted into sensitive material, the rheological changes are occurred with different pattern as to the kinds of gases. Thus, much simpler method to identify the organic or hazard gas will be obtained by the consideration of resonant frequency changes and resonant admittance changes simultaneously.

  • This paper represents development of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and usage as a dew point sensor. The temperature of a quartz resonator was controlled precisely from $20^{\circ}C$ to $-30^{\circ}C$ with the ramping rate of $0.1^{\circ}C/s$ by using a custom-made crystal holder housing the quartz resonator associated with a thermoelectric cooler (Peltier cooler), which results in the working range from $15.2^{\circ}C$ to $-24.0^{\circ}C$ based on an accurate holder temperature compensation and temperature effect compensation process. The developed QCM dew point sensor and analysis techniques show very good sensing characteristics at measurement of moist air with the relative humidity from 10 %R.H. to 90 %R.H. generated by a divided-type humidity generator and the dew point temperatures were determined with an accuracy of less than ${\pm}0.18^{\circ}C$, which also showed good agreement with reference values in their error range.

  • A new approach for the measurement of the surface coverages of monomolecular films fabricated by spontaneous adsorption of thiol compounds on gold is described. It is based on the mass change measurement with EQCM for the reductive electrochemical desorption of thiol in aqueous KOH solution. The results were compared with that of charge calculation during electrochemical desorption. The surface coverage value for eicosanethiol agrees with that obtained by charge calculation of electrochemical reduction as well as that expected from a geometrical model of the compact monolayer.

  • The eletrochemical charateristics of mercapto compound additives on the copper electroplating for semi conductor metalization were investigated. Mercapto compounds including sulfur atom is known that they activate deposition rate in eletroplating. Four different types of mercapto compounds were chosen with different concentration and both the characteristics of plating and throwing power were investigated by electrochemical experiments such as Hull cell test, Haring-Blum cell, cathodic polarization, EQCM(Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance). 3-Mercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid among 4 different mercapto compounds was regarded as the most proper activator with the results of the mass change of Cu metal deposited on eletrode by cathodic polarization and EQCM. The overpotential was more shifted to 100 mV in the concentration of 20 ppm than the solution with only $Cl^-$ in cathodic scan.

  • Olfactory receptor protein ODR10 was expressed in E.coli as fusion protein with GST and His6 Tag. Crude membrane extract of the expressed protein was coated on the surface of quartz crystal microbalance, and the interaction of the ODR10 with several odorants was examined. Although the expression level was very low, quartz crystal microbalance showed that the expressed protein interacted most strongly with diacetyl (butanedione), which is known to bind to the ODR10 protein selectively. The interaction between ODR10 and diacetyl was $5{\sim}10$ times stronger than the interaction between ODR10 and other odorants. Thus, E. coli cells expressing the olfactory receptor protein could be used as an olfactory biosensor. Also, such system could be used to test which olfactory receptor reacts specifically with which odorant molecules, since there has been no cheap and convenient way to test the interaction of olfactory receptors and odorant molecules yet.

  • Self-assembled multilayer thin films of poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride) (PEMAh) and poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) were fabricated by layer-by-layer (LbL) sequential adsorption. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopic analysis of the self-assembled PEMAh/P4VP multilayer films confirms that the driving forces for the multilayer buildup are the intermolecular hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. The linear increase of absorption peak of P4VP at 256 nm with increasing number of PEMAh/P4VP bilayers indicates that the multilayer buildup is an uniform assembling process. We also investigate the effects of polyelectrolyte concenhation variation of the dipping solution and pH variation of the PEMAh solution on the multilayer film formation. Thickness. adsorbed polyelectrolyte mass and surface roughness of the multilayer films were measured by UV-visible spectroscopy, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively.
