The lack of controllability over the wind causes fluctuations in the output power of the wind generators (WGs) located at the wind farms. Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM) equipped with Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) can significantly smooth these fluctuations by injecting or absorbing appropriate amount of active power, thus, controlling the power flow of WGs. But because of the component aging and thermal drift, its harmonic filter parameters vary, resulting in performance degradation. In this paper, Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) is used as a robust control scheme in order to deactivate the effects of filter parameters variations on the wind power generation power smoothing performance. The proposed robust control strategy of the DSTATCOM is successfully applied to a microgrid, including WGs. The simulation results obviously show that the proposed control technique can effectively smooth the fluctuations in the wind turbines' (WT) output power caused by wind speed variations; taking into account the filter parameters variations (structural parameter uncertainties).
In this paper, unreinforced and geogrid-reinforced soil foundations were modeled by discrete element method and this performed under surface strip footing loads. The effects of horizontal position of geogrid, vertical position, thickness, number, confining pressure have been investigated on the footing settlement and propagation of tensile force along the geogrids. Also, interaction between rectangular tunnel and strip footing with and without presence of geogrid layer has been analyzed. Experimental results of the literature were used to validation of relationships between the numerically achieved footing pressure-settlement for foundations of reinforced and unreinforced soil. Models and micro input parameters which used in the numerical modelling of reinforced and unreinforced soil tunnel were similar to parameters which were used in soil foundations. Model dimension was 1000 mm* 600 mm. Normal and shear stiffness of soils were 5*105 and 2.5 *105 N/m, respectively. Normal and shear stiffness of geogrid were 1*109 and 1*109 N/m, respectively. Loading rate was 0.001 mm/sec. Micro input parameters used in numerical simulation gain by try and error. In addition of the quantitative tensile force propagation along the geogrids, the footing settlements were visualized. Due to collaboration of three layers of geogrid reinforcements the bearing capacity of the reinforced soil tunnel was greatly improved. In such practical reinforced soil formations, the qualitative displacement propagations of soil particles in the soil tunnel and the quantitative vertical displacement propagations along the soil layers/geogrids represented the geogrid reinforcing impacts too.

The wear particles are relative to the failure and the life of machine elements directly. But it is not laid down to calculate shape parameters of wear particle. To analyze a variation of distributed characteristics of wear particles on moving conditions, its shape parameters such as diameter and roundness were calculated the quantitative values by digital image processing, and had to be defined the effective method of using those data. Up to the present, the shape parameters have been used simply into the average values. But these values are not effective to analyze a variation of distributed characteristics of occurred wear particles on moving conditions. In this study, the relative histograms of shape parameters of wear particles were used for the purpose of analyzing the distribution of wear particles in various conditions. The results showed that the relative histogram of shape parameters can be effectively represented to study a wear mechanism.
When a SAR system operates in a full-polarimetic mode, the amount of the information one can extract is so complex that the effective presentation of the information is important. However, the information acquired from the polarimetric SAR data is often difficult to interpret by itself, because it is consisted of both the amplitude information and the phase information. Polarimetric parameters are the good way of representing the polarimetric SAR information in a quantitative manner. Also they can characterize the scattering behavior of the ground scatterer. In this research, extraction of polarimetric parameters, evaluation and interpretation of the scattering behavior of the ground with respect to polarimetric SAR signal are carried out. Using the NASA/JPL AIRSAR data, we estimated the polarimetric parameters and compared them in terms of the ground features. In general, extracted parameters well represent the characteristics of the different features on the ground.
To automate cooking processes, quantitative descriptions are needed on how quality parameters, such as texture change during heating. Understanding mechanical property changes in foods during thermal treatment due to changes in chemical composition or physical structure is important in the context of engineering models and in precise control of quality in general. Texture degradation of food materials has been studied widely and softening kinetic parameters have been reported in many studies. For a better understanding of kinetic parameters, applied kinetic models were investigated, then rate constants at $100^{\circ}C$ and activation energy from previous kinetic studies were compared. The food materials are hardly classified into similar softening kinetics. The range of parameters is wide regardless of food types due to the complexity of food material, different testing methods, sample size, and geometry. Kinetic parameters are essential for optimal process design. For broad and reliable applications, kinetic parameters should be generated by a more consistent manner so that those of foods could be compared or grouped.
We present simulations of the optical-band images of high-redshift galaxies utilizing 845 near-ultraviolet (NUV) images of nearby galaxies obtained through the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX). We compute the concentration (C), asymmetry (A), Gini (G), and $M_{20}$ parameters of the GALEX NUV/Sloan Digital Sky Survey r-band images at z ~ 0 and their artificially redshifted optical images at z = 0.9 and 1.6 in order to quantify the morphology of galaxies at local and high redshifts. The morphological properties of nearby galaxies in the NUV are presented using a combination of morphological parameters, in which early-type galaxies are well separated from late-type galaxies in the $G-M_{20}$, $C-M_{20}$, A-C, and $A-M_{20}$ planes. Based on the distribution of galaxies in the A-C and $G-M_{20}$ planes, we examine the morphological K-correction (i.e., cosmological distance effect and bandshift effect). The cosmological distance effect on the quantitative morphological parameters is found to be significant for early-type galaxies, while late-type galaxies are more greatly affected by the bandshift effect. Knowledge of the morphological K-correction will set the foundation for forthcoming studies on understanding the quantitative assessment of galaxy evolution.

Purpose: Clinicians must examine tooth wear to make a proper diagnosis. However, qualitative methosds of measuring tooth wear have many disadvantages. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and evaluate quantitative parameters using the cusp area and volume of virtual dental models. Methods: The subjects of this study were the same virtual models that were used in our former study. The same age group classification and new tooth wear index (NTWI) scoring system were also reused. A virtual occlusal plane was generated with the highest cusp points and lowered vertically from 0.2 to 0.8 mm to create offset planes. The area and volume of each cusp was then measured and added together. In addition to the former analysis, the differential features of each cusp were analyzed. Results: The scores of the new parameters differentiated the age and NTWI groups better than those analyzed in the former study. The Spearman ${\rho}$ coefficients between the total area and the area of each cusp also showed higher scores at the levels of 0.6 mm (0.6A) and 0.8A. The mesiolingual cusp (MLC) showed a statistically significant difference (P<0.01) from the other cusps in the paired t-test. Additionally, the MLC exhibited the highest percentage of change at 0.6A in some age and NTWI groups. Regarding the age groups, the MLC showed the highest score in groups 1 and 2. For the NTWI groups, the MLC was not significantly different in groups 3 and 4. These results support the proposal that the lingual cusp exhibits rapid wear because it serves as a functional cusp. Conclusions: Although this study has limitations due to its cross-sectional nature, it suggests better quantitative parameters and analytical tools for the characteristics of cusp wear.
As a railway is receiving attention as an environment-friendly transportation mode, many high speed, inter-city and urban railway are constructed and remodeled in the world. With this trend, railway RAMS was included in the international standard IEC 62278 in 2002. RAMS activity in domestic market is also increased with this international trend. However, IEC 62278 does not describe the methodology of substantial contents like how reliability target is set although it can be used as an overall guideline when RAMS requirements are included in the purchase specification. That is because RAMS requirements should be set with the specific railway condition. It is required to fully understand the meaning of railway RAMS parameters and apply those correspond to the specific railway system and environment condition especially when a quantitative RAMS requirement is set. In this study, the meaning and characteristics of RAMS parameters applicable to the development of quantitative RAMS requirement of rolling stock is described. And the basic concept of RAMS and the definition of failure that IEC 62278 describes is modified and suggested in order to make more suitable to the development of quantitative RAMS requirement.
An accurate quantitative biomechanical evaluation for the spasticity caused by the disorder of central nervous system was made in this study. A sudden leg dropper was designed to generate objective testing environment at every trial. 3-dimensional motion analysis system(Elite. B.T.S. Italy) was used to measure kinematic data which were angle. and angular velocity of a lower limb. A program was developed to analyze the kinematic data of lower limb motion. and dynamic EMG data at the same time. To evaluate spasticity quantitatively. total 26 parameters including 14 parameters newly driven were analyzed, and statistical analysis were made for bilateral correlations. Results showed possibility to make accurate quantitative and objective evaluation for spasticity with various new parameters using new devices and program.
Multivalent macromolecular interactions underlie dynamic regulation of diverse biological processes in ever-changing cellular states. These interactions often involve binding of multiple proteins to a linear lattice including intrinsically disordered proteins and the chromosomal DNA with many repeating recognition motifs. Quantitative understanding of such multivalent interactions on a linear lattice is crucial for exploring their unique regulatory potentials in the cellular processes. In this review, the distinctive molecular features of the linear lattice system are first discussed with a particular focus on the overlapping nature of potential protein binding sites within a lattice. Then, we introduce two general quantitative frameworks, combinatorial and conditional probability models, dealing with the overlap problem and relating the binding parameters to the experimentally measurable properties of the linear lattice-protein interactions. To this end, we present two specific examples where the quantitative models have been applied and further extended to provide biological insights into specific cellular processes. In the first case, the conditional probability model was extended to highlight the significant impact of nonspecific binding of transcription factors to the chromosomal DNA on gene-specific transcriptional activities. The second case presents the recently developed combinatorial models to unravel the complex organization of target protein binding sites within an intrinsically disordered region (IDR) of a nucleoporin. In particular, these models have suggested a unique function of IDRs as a molecular switch coupling distinct cellular processes. The quantitative models reviewed here are envisioned to further advance for dissection and functional studies of more complex systems including phase-separated biomolecular condensates.
